    “Hollander,” Svetlana said.
Ilya froze, milk halfway to the fridge door. Svetlana had paused as well, but when he did not respond, she continued, “He is finally leaving Montreal. The bastards let him go.”

Ilya had a nice life in Providence, Rhode Island. He was married, technically. He was an American citizen. He had a good job. His NHL career, cut short, was in the past and so was his old hook up. So why the fuck was Shane Hollander standing outside his front door?

    Summary

Refusing to let Ilya ruin his career by signing with Ottawa, Shane chooses to really give their relationship a try and moves to Boston to live with Ilya and become a Raider. What follows is enough public scrutiny and backlash from his team that it has him questioning if he made the right decision. Until moments with Ilya and the Raiders show him exactly why he chose correctly.

    ---

Hayden’s eyes flickered to Shane as he sat on the bench, chewing on the edge of his mouth guard.

“Don’t fucking look at him,” Ilya insisted as he bent down for the faceoff.

“Excuse me?” Hayden mumbled, eyes darting back to him.

“You heard me,” he retorted, his tone clipped. “He’s not your teammate anymore; he’s mine. If you think Marlow is a problem to your game, wait until you see what I will do to your team if you hurt anyone on mine again.”

Hayden scoffed, dipping his head as he tried to focus on the game. Something about Ilya’s words still rang through his head though, sounding so definitive that he didn’t want to risk seeing what he was actually referring to when he said that.

The puck dropped again, and Ilya stole it before he could comprehend how quickly it happened.

    Summary

"Rozanov?" he says, almost without meaning to. Surely he's mistaken and is about to be told to fuck off. Or, even more alarmingly, he is correct, and then he is certain to be told to fuck off, and possibly punched in the face. The man shifts, eyes drifting from his drink up to Scott and— well, there's no denying it. The captain of the Boston Raiders is drunk in Scott's neighborhood dive bar.

"Fuck," the response is slow, the delayed reaction of molasses spilling out of a jar carelessly knocked over on the kitchen counter. "I must have overdone it. I have summoned the Ghost of Hockey Past."

Scott could just leave. He could turn on a heel, and leave this drunk asshole to discover on his own what consequences are.

Because he's stupid, though, because he's nothing if not a responsible captain even when the drunken idiot in question isn't even one of his own teammates, and yes, because a small part of him can't help but love a good train wreck when he sees one, he sits down instead.

    __
Or, Scott Hunter runs into Ilya Rozanov sometime around midnight after a game, and the two saddest, loneliest, most closeted hockey players in New York end up sharing more than they mean to.

Flight 771 shouldn't have been any different than any of the hundreds of other flights that Shane has taken over the course of his career, aside from the fact that it was taking him towards his lifelong dream—towards the Olympics.

It shouldn't have been any different.

    BEND OVER, STAY DOWN.

    BEND OVER, STAY DOWN.

    It is.

Except, they probably fucking do have the same cold, because, why wouldn’t they? Every other aspect of Shane’s career, his life, is tied up with Ilya Rozanov’s. The interview today is just more proof that they’ve always come as a pair, and that they always will. First and second; second and first. Rozanov and Hollander; Hollander and Rozanov. They’ll be mentioned in the same breath for the rest of their careers, then they’ll be dumb stories about which of them will retire first, and then they’ll be written about together in the hockey histories that Shane reads. They’re fucking inseparable.

Only, not like that. Not… coupled. No, it’s Hollander versus Rozanov, now and forever.

    ----

Montreal Metros (home) vs. Boston Raiders (visitors). Five years since rookie season. One interview. One hockey game. Two sick captains.
