    In the exhibit rooms, Ajax patiently follows Zhongli around the room, never asking them to move faster. They stand side by side, and Ajax listens to Zhongli tell him the history of each painting, the context of this particular series' subject matter — a great lieutenant said to leave red in his wake that painted the snow.

    He leans in as Zhongli points out the details, the hidden symbolism within the composition: the loyalty of the dog, the wounded pride of the bloodied bird, each memento mori that lies in wait behind the noble figures. The crowd presses around them, and their shoulders brush against each other. The touch quietly startles Zhongli, and his heart flutters. 

    Ajax doesn't seem to mind, admiring the exhibit in comfortable silence. He's closer than ever. Lovely, under the spotlights. Zhongli watches his eyes carefully study the painting in front of them, and he realizes he's been staring at Ajax's clear blue eyes, the line of his jaw, studying Ajax in return.

    Six months away from comfort, Zhongli's home, the warm sun, the place he knows and loves. Six months, he’ll be in this frigid place to wrap up his research. And then he’ll be able to return.
