The creature stopped about a hundred yards away from the island. Even at this distance, Dani could tell that it was larger than the tree. It looked sort of like a furry whale that had lost a fight with a Kraken. Dark green hair hung from its form except for random circular patches where it might have been torn off. The skin underneath was dark purple, like a bruise.
“Mirror-kin, what are you doing so far from your sire? Why so deep? These depths are not meant to be traversed by one so little.”

Danny melted, leaning into the point of contact as she rubbed his cheek. He was wearing nothing more than jeans and a t-shirt, but his mom and Agent Z were both decked out in full hazmat gear. He couldn’t quite make out their expressions through the goggles, but he imagined his mom looking proud and basked in her warmth.
“My special boy,” she murmured. “You’re going to make so many discoveries.”
