“Found something impossible,” Toge says before pushing the door open.
In the center of the maintenance level sits a small projector, old and ugly. Its housing has been repaired so many times that the original metal barely shows, with heat tape along one side and a cracked lens polished carefully by hand. Dates are carved into the casing, each one layered over the last.
Toge kneels beside it.
“Stole this?” Yuuta asks, stepping closer.
Toge snorts softly. “Salvaged.”
“Same thing.”
“Use fewer words.”
The switch clicks.

Summary
Twenty minutes later, Yuuta resurfaced at the chamber’s edge carrying a pearl.

Yuuta held it out with both hands and waited.
Toge looked at the pearl.

Summary
Toge studied him for a second, then nodded. He shifted closer and wrapped one hand lightly around Yuuta’s arm, holding on with easy familiarity, his thumb brushing once against the fabric of Yuuta’s sleeve.
Yuuta was going to die.
He was going to die in this coffee shop that smelled like burnt caramel, sitting next to the most attractive man he’d ever hired to pretend to love him, and Maki was going to read his obituary aloud at his funeral and roast him for it.
“Relax,” Toge murmured, close enough that his breath ghosted against Yuuta’s ear. “I’m very good at this.”
That, Yuuta thought desperately, is exactly the problem.
Yuuta hired a professional boyfriend for one fake double date with his friends, which would have been a lot less dangerous if said boyfriend were better at staying professional.

Beneath the half-mask, Yuuta’s eyes were very dark, almost black in the lantern light, and they were resting on Toge with an expression Toge had never seen before.
Toge thought dizzily, He thinks I am a beautiful stranger. He is looking at me like that because he thinks I am a beautiful girl. This is what it looks like when Yuuta is interested. This is what I have never been allowed to see.
If this were the only hour, then let it be the hour. Let the morning have what it wanted of him. Tonight, he was the stranger in the moth-cloak, dancing with a chivalrous knight in the lantern square.
He could grieve tomorrow.

Summary
“Morning, sunshine,” Toge murmured, leaning in to check the neural-port’s alignment. His breath ghosted across the back of Yuuta’s neck, and the fine hairs there rose. Close to the port, the air always carried a faint static charge. “Core’s running hot today. Did you skip your cooldown cycle again, or are you just happy to see me?”
Yuuta didn’t answer. The protocol discouraged speech during calibration to minimize the risk of frequency contamination.
