Summary
Herbert has been making conversation at work, and it’s driving Dan categorically insane. When said in regards to anyone else, this sounds ridiculous and controlling, but this is Herbert; it all feels deeply wrong. But it’s just conversation, a few smiles. Dan should ignore it. No one seems to notice it eating away at him, anyway, so no need to mention it. No one can see he’s gnashing his teeth against his muzzle.

So, as it stands, Dan can’t be with women in any capacity, because he can’t get over Meg. He can’t date men, because of a variety of hang ups. He can’t do anything with Herbert. Obviously. What he can do is have unbridled, anonymous sex with strange men in public restrooms. So that’s what he’s going to do.

Dan asked Herbert the same question again one night, playing with his fingers in bed. “Am I going to Hell?”
Herbert had sighed tiredly. They’d been over this. At this point, Dan should have made his peace; he’d either punish himself until the end of his days, or he’d set himself free. Herbert was sick of the attention afforded to this particular fallacy, anyway. And yet, that night, he chose a new answer.
“Who knows,” Herbert said, “but I’ll be there, too.”
He expected a spark of fear in Dan’s eyes, but instead, he saw only relief. Dan pressed Herbert’s hand to his mouth.
Now, 9 months later, sitting alone in the cold basement, just one floor below Dan and his perfect girlfriend, Herbert would like to change his answer.
