Outside, thunder rumbled faintly, distant enough not to be scary but loud enough to make Avery scowl at the ceiling. His core glowed a dull, irritated green, pulsing slowly.
“And it ruins everything! Paths get muddy, plants get dramatic, I get dramatic—”
“You are dramatic regardless of weather,” D3r said mildly.
Avery gasped. “Rude. Uncalled for. False.”
Another rumble of thunder rolled through the sky, closer this time.
Avery squinted at the window. “Also what’s even the point of storms? Like. Congratulations, sky, you made clouds mad at each other.”

“You want to throw my laptop off a cliff.”
“Or smash it. Or set it on fire. Or all three. We can workshop it.”
There’s another quiet laugh, but it doesn’t quite stick the landing. Avery hears the hesitation creeping back in, curling around the edges of D3r’s voice like fog.
“In person,” D3r says, not quite a question.
“Yeah,” Avery says easily, like it doesn’t make his stomach flip. “In person. I wanna meet you.”
The words hang between them.
He watches D3r’s character on screen because it’s easier than imagining D3r’s face doing whatever it’s doing right now. The avatar doesn’t react, of course. Just stands there in the pixelated grass, the moon casting a pale square light over his shoulders. Avery imagines he can see tension in the way the model is angled, which is ridiculous, but he’s very good at projecting onto blockmen at this point.

Summary
The air grows colder. Dampness clings to his clothes, seeps into his shoes. The floor narrows, the slope sharpening just enough that they start watching their footing more carefully. The cave doesn’t feel hostile, exactly, but it does feel aware, like it’s paying attention now that they’ve committed.
“Watch your head,” someone mutters as the ceiling dips.
Avery ducks automatically, glow flaring brighter for a moment before he reins it in. The passage pinches inward, walls drawing closer until shoulders brush stone if you aren’t careful. He can still stretch his arms out, still turn around without too much trouble, but the space has changed. It presses. It asks things of them.
They laugh it off. Someone makes a joke about being eaten alive. Someone else tells them to shut up.
