Summary
“I’m allergic to lying?!”
“Seems like it,” Lee confirms, closing one eye to line up a shot. He breathes in, holds, then exhales, letting the arrow loose. It hits the bullseye, but not quite as centred as he’d like it to be. Shoot. He sets down his bow, and Will runs off, scooping up the volley and running back with them.
(Gods, Lee loves having a little brother.)
“That’s not a real allergy,” he huffs, placing an arrow in Lee’s waiting hand. “The ten most common allergy types are foods, animals, pollen, mold, dust mites, medications, latex, insect stings, cockroaches, and perfumes or household chemicals. Other allergens are rare but not impossible, but all are a result of physical stimuli. An allergy to a concept or person is a figure of speech.”
Lee squints at him. “Do you know what ‘stimuli’ means?”
“No.”
“It means a thing that evokes a specific reaction. Where’d you read that?”
“‘The Flu, The Plague, and the Common Cold — How We Are Shaped By Reacting’ by Phyllis Ledger.”
“Huh.”

“Are we on a quest?” Will asks, five minutes out on the road.
“Eight year olds don’t go on quests.”
“Diomedes was ten when he fought the Trojan war.”
“Are you Diomedes?”
“No.”
“Are you ten?”
“No.”
“Then no quests for you.”
“Aw.”
“Your quest can be being quiet for twenty minutes,” Michael grumbles, making a face when Will sticks his tongue out at him.

Summary
Will scrunches his nose. “…Enchanted cups?”
The look he levels in Lee’s direction is equivalent, he imagines, to the look the jury gave OJ Simpson on his first foray of the witness stand, but he tilts his cup closer to him, thinks for a minute, and then says, “Coke.”
All three of them hold their breath. Even Michael, who is recovering from his recent trip to the ground. The cup slowly fills with sparkling amber liquid.
Will frowns.
“Hey,” he says, something akin to a pout taking over his face, “I asked for coke.”
The drink stops fizzing. It, too, seems to regard the young boy in confusion.
“That would indeed be Coke,” Diana says eventually.
Will scowls. (It is, probably unfortunately for him, a little bit adorable, because his cheeks are very pudgy and he has quite a lot of freckles and his whole face seems to scrunch with the movement. Like a baby hippo. Lee tries really very hard not to smile but it’s something of a losing battle, he thinks.)
“It gave me cola!”

Summary
"Whatever you're doing, cut it the fuck out," Lee barks, sprinting up the porch, and then very quickly turns to the side to wheeze silently. "Leave him -- oh, for the love of the gods."
Fortunately, his youngest brother is not being teased or tortured or in any other such way bothered. Technically. Unfortunately, the brother who he should have been more concerned about is pinning said baby brother to the floor, needles shining in hand, shrieking, "Sit still! Sit still! I swear to the muses, asswipe, sit still or I am going to end up impaling your brain!"
"It hurts, it hurts, it hurts --"
"I have not fucking done it yet!"
"Michael," Lee says, dragging a hand down his face, "watch your fucking language."
Michael bares his teeth. "He pestered me for twelve fucking days, Lee. He is getting his ears pierced or I am going to pierce him between the eyes from a hundred fucking feet."

Summary
“You’ll be taking over in no time,” her brother says. “You’re already better than me, squirt.”
She isn’t. By virtue of her parentage she can heal, and she can sing the hymns. But her strength is in her bow and her violin; her strings, not the stretch of bandages or shine of the suture. Will knows it. This brother, though, the one who stands in his place, is not speaking to her.
“I am?”
“‘Course. You know anyone else who can drag an errant soul right back into a body?”
Yes. She’s seen how it makes Chiron’s lips tighten and the atmosphere go dark. There is healing, and then there is blasphemy and challenge. Will walks the line like no one has since Zeus struck the challenger clean off the Earth.
This brother is not talking to her.
“Am I really going to take over, Lee?”
She says it carefully, because she isn’t sure. There are no pictures and Will tells no stories. But she hears whispers, sometimes, from the scattered few who knew them both, who watch Will corral the lot of them to breakfast or take the reigns of the chariot or calm hysterics with a touch, who whisper: Sometimes I look at him and it’s like seeing a ghost.

Summary
For a moment, there is nothing.
Stillness.
Silence.
Lee glances over at the journal. Will holds his breath. Lee moves his hand, ever so slightly.
They bolt at the same time.
"Nothing!" Will shouts, diving for the book. He is, unfortunately, a pipsqueak, and easily lifted to the side and dropped, screeching and clawing, on Michael's top bunk. "Nothing, nothing, I'm doing nothing --"
"If you're doing nothing, then it's fine if I look," reasons Lee, knowing that if he kept a diary and any of his rat ass siblings tried looking through it he'd kill himself. "Just blank pages, right?"
Will lunges, but Lee is stronger than he is, and his arms are longer. He plants a hand on his squishy face and holds him there, struggling, arms scrabbling for the journal, Cass's wheezing echoing through the largely empty cabin.
"Cass! Tell him -- tell him to give it back --"
Lee flips open the book.
Will screams.

Summary
"Hi, baby," she murmurs, kissing the crest of his forehead. "Did I wake you?"
Will shakes his head. Diana raises her eyebrows, and he must anticipate it, because he murmurs, "Haven't slept yet." He pauses. "Followed you."
"Hm." Diana runs a hand down his spine, pressing firmer when he shivers. She turns so her cheek smushes against the top of his big head. "You were definitely sleeping, bug."
"No."
"Mhm. Heard you snoring and everything."
Will scowls. "I do not snore."
Diana smiles, and cannot help squeezing him. He squirms, huffy, but remains in the circle of her arms, tucked into the crook of her bent leg. He settles, after a moment, small hands balled up against her stomach. Trembling, a little.
"Oh. Must be Michael, then."
Will nods. "Mhm."
"And all the snoring I hear before Michael goes to bed…?"
Will pauses. "A trick of the wind."

Summary
“It’s not fair that you left me behind,” Will says, and it is the deadness of his voice more than the content of his sentence that makes her cry. “I hate it here.”
“You don’t,” Cass whispers, futilely. Even if he could hear her, the words don’t come from her torn throat. They get drowned in the blood, dripping down her neck. “You don’t, asteraki. You don’t.”
He doesn’t say more but there are goosebumps where her phantom fingers press — try to press — into him. His eyes are dull. She remembers Diana comparing them to electricity, once. The color wasn’t right — Will’s eyes are a darker blue, and anyway electricity is yellow if it is anything at all — but all of his buzzes, like live wire, blurring with the force if his vibrating, and his bright round eyes most of all. They are hard to look at. Dizzying. Like the churn of your stomach in the second hour of a road trip, when the speed of the car really settles in your animal body. Too much, almost.
His eyes are blue like mold, now. Like something that has been still so long it’s been left to rot.
