He’s familiar with the space Viktor takes up, standing next to him by the blackboard or sitting down at the tables. He knows how Viktor will shuffle underneath Jayce’s arm to correct a mistake in his maths, or rewrite a messy theory while Jayce prattles on about the next steps. He knows the surprising sturdiness of Viktor’s cane, as it smacks at his ankles when Jayce doesn’t make room fast enough.

“I’m sorry,” Jayce says quietly. His hand reaches back out, slowly, and while Viktor eyes it with as much fucking venom as he can manage, he lets it fall against his thigh, hand warm even through the hospital blankets. “Do you want me to go?”
“No,” Viktor says. “Go fetch the doctor. I need to tell them where they can stick their medical opinions.”

Summary
Jayce is sent back to his own timeline, and he promised Viktor he'd make it right. He's held to the promise, and must relive the same events until he gets it right, no matter how many times it takes. Getting it right means killing Viktor.

She narrows her eyes at him, and glances at the new cocoon which holds Viktor. She looks back at Jayce. “I see no reason why your injuries cannot be tended here, outside of the medical tent.”
