Summary
Even in the dim light, he can see that Jaskier is absolutely covered in blood. His clothes are splattered with it, his face is streaked, there’s even blood in his hair. His arms are slick and saturated up to the elbow and the sharp, polished blade Geralt had given him before he went into the cave is still gripped tightly in one fist like he can’t let it go. His knees are drawn up to his chest like he’s trying to make himself very small and aside from his quiet, hitched breathing he doesn’t move at all.
Jaskier blinks at him and his expression crumples just slightly as he stifles back a sob. “I killed them.”
(Or Jaskier is forced to kill in self-defense and does not handle it well. Geralt helps him pick up the pieces.)

Summary
Geralt is running forward already, desperate to reach the river and retrieve his stupid bard from the woman’s clutches but he knows he won’t make it in time. Her arms wrap around the bard’s slim back, cold and rotting, and pulls him against her.
All he can do is watch as the woman slips beneath the water, dragging Jaskier down with her, and both disappear beneath the surface.
(Or, everything was going fine until the mermaid showed up)

Summary
He’s struggling to come up with a plan when he hears a panicked cry behind him. Two of the men have grabbed Jaskier and are now dragging him bodily into the roil of the crowd. The bard is struggling against them desperately but it’s not enough, they’re too strong and the crowd is too big. Over the deafening roar of the crowd he hears a panicked “Geralt!” before the hapless bard disappears into the mob.
He does draw his sword then and has every intention of cutting his way through the crowd to get to Jaskier but he never gets the chance. Something heavy and blunt slams into the back of his head and he crumples to his knees.
(Or, Jaskier is 3 ounces of whoop ass and a special type of feral, especially when someone hurts Geralt)

“Look at me, Jaskier.”
“I ‘m lookin’ at you, Ger’lt, and you’re very handsome.”
The Witcher sighs. “You have a fever.”
Jaskier shakes his head slightly. “Can’t have a fever,” he argues weakly as he continues to shiver. “‘M freezing.”
“That’s because of the fever.”
The bard looks affronted. “Well that’s rude.”
(Or, as it turns out, there's no such thing as a mild case of blood poisoning)
