Chapter Text
Prologue: The Hunger Games
The studio lights flared, catching the perfect, glittering curls of Caesar Flickerman’s bright blue hair. He smiled widely at the camera, his teeth gleaming.
“Citizens of the Capitol, welcome to the historic seventy-fourth year of the Hunger Games,” Caesar boomed. The studio audience erupted into thunderous applause, and Caesar, being Caesar, paused and basked in the glow of the cheers, flashing a brilliant grin before waving his hands for silence.
“As always, thirty-two tributes will step into the arena, but only one will leave alive! From each of our great Nations—Fire, Water, Earth, and Air—six benders will be reaped. And let's not forget our baseline favorites, the two non-benders to represent the un-gifted populace!” A wave of mocking laughter and quiet murmurs rippled through the studio audience.
Caesar chuckled warmly, leaning toward the camera with a quick wink. “Now, we all know the oddsmakers usually treat our non-benders as free points for the Careers. They lack the spark, folks! They have no elements to shield them, meaning they generally don't last past the first sunset. I put a heavy bet on a particularly muscular non-bender back in the sixty-first Games, and my wallet still hasn't recovered from how fast he folded!”
The studio audience roared with laughter right on cue, earning another mischievous grin from Caesar. “But if last year taught us anything, it’s that mind games can match any element,” Caesar continued, his voice dropping to a theatrical, thrilling whisper.
“The oddsmakers were left utterly ruined by the blood-chilling brilliance of the Fire Nation’s own Azula Aitken! Daughter of the Fire Lord himself. And who could forget such a win? She played the fragile, helpless victim during training, gathering all the weakest tributes into a tragic alliance… only to sell them out, slaughter them in their sleep, and march right to the Cornucopia!” The crowd gasped collectively, leaning forward in their seats as Caesar mimicked a sword swipe with his microphone.
“Faced with the entire Earthbender Career pack, we thought she was gone, but she didn't even blink. One single, blinding flash of blue lightning and a couple of well placed kicks, and boom! The entire pack was turned to ash. The most breathtaking, cold-blooded finale the Capitol has seen in a generation!” The crowd cheered wildly, chanting Azula's name until Caesar raised a hand so he could continue.
“Now, can the Fire Nation pull off a back-to-back miracle? Usually, our short-tempered Firebenders are a safe bet, but they just as often lose the crown due to their own stubbornness and legendary tempers.
“If you’re betting on the Air Districts, expect peace, meditation, and very quick exits. Searching for peace rather than a fight, they usually die from natural causes or arena hazards, placing them dead last in likelihood to win.” Caesar gave a little exaggerated pout, before giving a wicked smile. “But you never know, a little talented bugger might scrape them a win!
“Our Water Districts look sweet, but they pack a vicious punch—though regretfully, they are on a bit of a losing streak. Can they redeem themselves this year? We shall see!” Caesar stepped forward, his eyes shining with theatrical excitement.
“And finally, our cool-headed powerhouse Careers from the Earth Districts. Favored since the dark days of the First Rebellion, the Earthbenders have claimed victory in more than half of the Games over the past seventy-three years. Will they add another glorious win to their list!” Caesar turned toward the massive holographic screens behind him, raising his arms as the neon stage lights began to pulse.
“We are about to find out. Up next, the Reaping! And may the odds be ever in your favor!”
