# Naruto Knows: The Brother Who Came Home
The first sign that Itachi Uchiha had returned to Fire Country was not a body.
It was a cup.
Genma found it on a table in a roadside tea house eighteen kilometres east of Konoha, still warm despite the owner insisting the two travellers who had used the corner booth had left nearly half an hour earlier.
There were two cups.
One smelled faintly of roasted rice.
The other had barely been touched.
Genma stood over them with his senbon between his teeth and listened while the owner described the customers.
Black cloaks.
Red clouds.
One enormous man with blue-grey skin, bandages around a sword too large to be carried comfortably indoors and a voice that made the other patrons stop pretending not to listen.
The other quiet.
Dark hair.
Young-looking.
Red eyes, the owner thought, although perhaps that had been the lantern.
Genma did not believe it had been the lantern.
He placed two fingers against the pulse point at his wrist.
Raidō, standing near the door, answered.
Present.
Then Raidō looked toward the road.
“You think they wanted someone to notice.”
Genma crouched beside the untouched cup.
“No.”
“Why leave witnesses?”
“They didn’t.”
Genma looked toward the kitchen.
The owner was alive because killing him would have created more attention than ignoring him.
That was different.
He lifted the cup without touching the rim.
“Uchiha drinks tea?”
Raidō looked at him.
“That’s your question?”
“It tells us whether the description is good.”
Raidō sighed.
“I don’t know what Itachi Uchiha drinks.”
“Neither do I.”
Genma’s mouth tightened around the senbon.
“That’s irritating.”
They had fought beside Itachi.
Not often.
Not enough.
ANBU teams crossed in corridors, briefing rooms and rooftops at hours most civilians never saw.
Everyone had known the prodigy.
Everyone had known the massacre.
The two facts had swallowed everything between them.
Genma remembered a boy who bowed too formally to adults.
Raidō remembered him standing alone beside a mission-board window while other thirteen-year-olds argued about dumplings.
Neither memory had mattered at the time.
Children being quiet around jounin did not look strange in a village that called six-year-olds chunin.
It looked disciplined.
The tea house owner spoke again.
“The quiet one asked how long to the village.”
Genma turned.
“Konoha?”
“Yes.”
“Exactly?”
The man swallowed.
“He said, ‘The Leaf.’”
Raidō’s posture changed.
Information.
Genma took out a field form.
Not the old cramped kind.
Ibiki’s revised emergency sheet.
**Location.**
**Observed.**
**What changed.**
**What is missing.**
Genma filled it quickly.
He had mocked Naruto’s simplified forms the first time Ibiki brought them to the Hatake compound.
Then he used one after being concussed on a mission and realised he could still read his own handwriting.
He had stopped mocking.
Mostly.
“What’s missing?” Raidō asked.
Genma stared east.
“Why now.”
They sent the hawk.
Konoha knew twenty-seven minutes later.
---
The message reached Shikaku during a succession meeting.
The Third Hokage had three possible retirement timelines spread across his desk, all of which Jiraiya had annotated with unhelpful comments.
Tsunade had drawn a line through the phrase *medical transition authority pending* and written **NOT PENDING IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO SURVIVE** beneath it.
Shikaku was explaining why declaring the Hokage’s intended retirement date before Root compliance review would be strategically irresponsible when a masked ANBU appeared in the window.
The room changed before the report was read.
Shikaku saw it in the operative’s feet.
Not an administrative interruption.
“Hokage-sama.”
The Third took the scroll.
Read.
Passed it to Shikaku.
Jiraiya stopped slouching.
Tsunade moved toward the desk.
Shikaku read the names.
Possible Uchiha Itachi.
Possible Hoshigaki Kisame.
Eastern approach.
Akatsuki insignia.
He thought first of Naruto.
Then Sasuke.
Not because one mattered more.
Because each was a different probable objective.
“The jinchūriki,” Tsunade said.
Jiraiya nodded.
“And the brother.”
The Third looked toward the window.
“Alert Kakashi.”
Shikaku was already writing.
“Quietly?”
“Yes.”
“No general alarm?”
The Hokage’s fingers tightened around his pipe.
“If Akatsuki is scouting, a full mobilisation confirms exactly what we fear.”
Jiraiya looked at him.
“They already know Naruto’s here.”
“Likely.”
“Sand knows.”
“Yes.”
“Grass suspects.”
“Yes.”
“The secrecy isn’t holding the same way.”
The Third’s face tightened.
Naruto had asked permission to tell his team.
Gaara’s exposure had changed the political environment.
Every village with competent intelligence would eventually connect Naruto’s age, the timing of the Nine-Tails attack and the restrictions around his childhood records.
Secrecy could slow certainty.
It could not erase inference.
“Still,” the Hokage said, “we do not announce him.”
“No,” Jiraiya agreed.
Tsunade looked at Shikaku.
“Hospital alert?”
“Tier two.”
She nodded.
Not mass casualty.
Prepare.
Shikaku wrote another message.
“Kakashi and Team Seven return to the Hatake compound. Naruto does not travel unescorted.”
The Third’s eyes moved toward him.
“Sasuke?”
Shikaku’s hand paused.
If Itachi intended contact, isolating Sasuke completely might make him more likely to conceal anything that slipped through.
Team Seven’s procedures worked because information entered before crisis.
“Same location,” Shikaku said. “Brief him.”
“Everything?” Tsunade asked.
“Everything we know.”
Tiny pieces.
Itachi’s return would not become a secret adults discussed while Sasuke trained beneath them.
Not this time.
---
Sasuke received the information while standing ankle-deep in mud.
Shikaku had assigned him an intelligence exercise involving three conflicting patrol reports and a missing wagon.
The wagon had turned out to be neither missing nor stolen.
A clerk had copied the route number incorrectly.
Sasuke had spent four hours constructing increasingly complicated explanations for sabotage before Naruto, who had come to annoy him, pointed at the wheel tracks leading directly to the storage yard.
“More than one sign,” Naruto had said smugly.
Sasuke had almost buried him in mud.
Now Kakashi appeared at the road’s edge.
No book.
Sasuke knew immediately.
“What?”
Kakashi stepped closer.
Naruto stopped smiling.
Sakura, returning from the hospital with her vest tied around her waist, changed direction toward them.
Team Seven assembled without being called.
Kakashi looked at Sasuke first.
“Possible Akatsuki sighting east of Konoha.”
Sasuke’s body went cold.
He did not ask which member.
Kakashi continued.
“Descriptions match Hoshigaki Kisame and Uchiha Itachi.”
The name struck like it always did.
Not lesser because Sasuke had prepared for it.
Not duller because he had discussed manipulation with Shikaku.
Itachi.
His brother existed differently when far away.
A target.
A question.
A structure around which Sasuke organised training.
In Fire Country, the word became footsteps.
A door.
A hand against the Uchiha compound wall.
Blood on tatami.
His mother’s face.
Sasuke’s breathing stopped.
Naruto said, “Position.”
The procedure entered before panic could become command.
Sasuke hated him for a second.
Because Naruto had noticed.
Because Sasuke wanted the reaction to belong only to him.
He looked at the road.
“South edge of training route.”
“People?” Sakura asked.
“Kakashi. Naruto. Sakura.”
“Threat present?”
Sasuke’s jaw tightened.
“No confirmed threat here.”
The world returned enough to contain choices.
Kakashi waited.
Sasuke looked at him.
“When?”
“Report logged forty minutes ago.”
“Direction?”
“Toward Konoha.”
“What do they want?”
“Unknown.”
Bad answer.
Honest.
Sasuke’s hands closed.
He could feel the first impulse.
Move.
Find them before adults redirected everything.
Ask Itachi before someone else intervened.
No.
That was the pattern.
He forced himself to speak.
“He may contact me.”
Kakashi’s visible eye sharpened.
“Yes.”
“He may be here for Naruto.”
“Yes.”
Naruto’s face tightened.
Sakura looked at him.
No surprise.
They knew.
That changed the room.
Sasuke inhaled.
“We go back to the compound.”
Naruto looked at him.
Not praise.
Checking.
Sasuke glared.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Your face did.”
Kakashi’s eye curved faintly despite the moment.
Sasuke hated them all.
A little.
He walked toward home with Team Seven around him.
Not the Uchiha compound.
Not only.
The Hatake compound.
That distinction hurt in ways he did not have time to examine.
---
Konoha did not visibly mobilise.
Naruto noticed anyway.
Two fruit sellers near the western road were ANBU.
A man repairing a roof had not moved the hammer in twelve minutes.
The woman at the dumpling stand wore civilian sandals over shinobi stance.
At the Hatake gate, the new security seal recognised Team Seven and chimed once.
Present.
Jiraiya waited inside.
So did Yamato.
Iruka was there too.
Naruto stopped.
“Why’s Iruka here?”
Iruka folded his arms.
“Good to see you too.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I know.”
Kakashi looked toward the bunkhouses.
“Academy protocols moved to secondary readiness.”
Naruto’s stomach tightened.
War preparation and Akatsuki had touched the same afternoon.
Iruka continued.
“The students are still in class. I’m here because Kakashi-sensei wanted me briefed on the compound shelter seals if we need to move them.”
Kakashi stared.
“You don’t call me sensei.”
“You’re giving me homework.”
“Fair.”
Naruto looked toward Jiraiya.
The Sannin’s face was too serious.
“Akatsuki wants jinchūriki.”
Jiraiya nodded.
The word no longer required circumvention in front of Team Seven.
Sasuke’s eyes moved toward Naruto.
Sakura’s shoulders stiffened.
Naruto knew.
Knowing did not make it easy.
“Gaara too.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Jiraiya looked at Kakashi.
Then Naruto.
“We don’t know the full objective. Akatsuki has been collecting information about bijū for years. Recent activity suggests collection may be moving from intelligence to operations.”
“Collection.”
Sakura’s face went pale.
Jiraiya did not soften the word.
“Possibly.”
Naruto’s hand moved to his stomach.
The seal did not react.
The fox remained distant.
He thought of Gaara’s letter.
The sand feels like a hand I am learning to move instead of a hand around my throat.
Akatsuki would look at Gaara and see Shukaku.
At Naruto and see Nine-Tails.
Containers again.
Kisame, somewhere beyond the walls, might not know Naruto liked ramen.
Or sealing.
Or hated the word foundation because he still misspelled it.
Might not care.
Sakura stepped beside Naruto.
Not touching.
Available.
Sasuke stood on the other side.
Naruto noticed.
“You don’t have to do that.”
Sasuke looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer was gruff.
Incomplete.
Naruto understood.
Kakashi unrolled the security plan.
“Until the threat is resolved, no one leaves alone.”
Naruto immediately objected.
“I’m not staying trapped here.”
“You are not trapped.”
“You just said I can’t leave.”
“You can leave accompanied.”
“That’s trapped with extra people.”
Jiraiya snorted.
Naruto glared.
Kakashi continued.
“We maintain ordinary routines where possible.”
“Mission?”
“No external missions.”
Nearly two months of Team Seven’s protected year had passed. A little over ten remained, and Naruto did not intend to spend them waiting behind a wall.
Sakura frowned.
“Hospital?”
“Tsunade wants you there on normal schedule.”
“Academy?” Naruto asked.
“Iruka will return.”
Naruto looked offended.
“Why can he go?”
Iruka raised one eyebrow.
“Because Akatsuki is not hunting me.”
“Rude.”
Iruka’s face softened.
That landed differently.
Naruto looked away.
Kakashi pointed toward the perimeter diagram.
“Red flare remains overmatch. White remains separation. Compound barrier can trigger direct alert to jounin command.”
Sasuke had been silent.
Kakashi looked at him.
“Sasuke?”
He stared at the map.
“If Itachi sends a message?”
“Report it.”
“If it’s personal.”
“Report that contact occurred. Content remains yours unless it affects immediate security.”
Sasuke looked up.
The answer mattered.
Not hand it over.
Not we read everything.
Information with a boundary.
“And if he asks to meet?”
Kakashi’s visible eye hardened.
“You do not go alone.”
Sasuke’s face tightened.
“I know.”
Kakashi did not say good.
Knowledge was not immunity.
Sasuke continued.
“If I want to hear what he says?”
“We build conditions.”
Naruto frowned.
“You’d let him talk to Itachi?”
“Let is not the right word.”
Kakashi looked at Sasuke.
“I would help make the choice survivable.”
Sasuke’s throat tightened.
That was almost worse than being ordered.
A command could become someone else’s fault.
A choice remained his.
Jiraiya watched Kakashi.
“You’ve changed.”
Kakashi opened his book.
“No.”
Yamato said, “Yes.”
Everyone looked at him.
Yamato pretended the wall required inspection.
Tiny pieces.
---
Itachi entered Konoha before sunset.
He did not use the main gate.
The old ANBU route beneath the eastern drainage culvert still existed.
That disturbed him.
He had expected it closed.
Instead, he found three new seal layers.
One bore Jiraiya’s style.
Another was recent Konoha barrier work.
The third contained a structural irregularity.
Not a flaw.
Something unconventional.
A detection path buried under the physical channel so the warning remained active if the outer seal was broken.
Itachi looked at it for a long moment.
Kisame crouched behind him.
“Problem?”
“No.”
“You’ve been staring at a wall.”
“Someone revised the system.”
“Impressive?”
Itachi thought of Uzumaki sealing traditions.
The irregularity did not look like Jiraiya.
Too blunt.
Too spatial.
Someone learning.
“No.”
Kisame grinned.
“That means yes.”
They did not cross there.
Itachi chose another route.
Konoha had changed.
Not visibly.
The walls remained.
The patrol uniforms.
The smell of cooking fires.
Children running between evening shops.
But shinobi attention overlapped more densely than his previous intelligence suggested.
A chunin on a roof acknowledged an ANBU beneath him without breaking cover.
Two jounin changed patrol direction after a hand gesture from a civilian-clothed academy instructor.
Small coordination.
Not the compartmentalisation Orochimaru’s intelligence had described.
Itachi stored it.
The mission remained reconnaissance first.
Confirm Nine-Tails jinchūriki.
Assess security.
Avoid unnecessary engagement.
Kisame wanted more.
Kisame often wanted more.
“You know where the kid lives?” he asked.
Itachi looked west.
The old records said Naruto Uzumaki occupied a small apartment in the civilian district.
Current observation showed no movement there.
Instead, shinobi traffic converged elsewhere.
Hatake land.
Itachi knew the place.
Everyone from his generation knew the name.
The White Fang’s estate had been closed for years.
“Kakashi,” he said.
Kisame looked amused.
“The Copy Ninja collects strays now?”
Itachi did not answer.
The phrasing irritated him.
He did not examine why.
They moved.
---
Itachi saw the Hatake gate from two roofs away.
Restored timber.
Old clan symbol.
A thin orange line around the edge.
Itachi stared.
Kisame followed his gaze.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
The gate opened.
Sakura Haruno stepped outside carrying medical texts.
Chunin vest.
Itachi had reviewed the exam intelligence.
Haruno promoted.
Naruto Uzumaki declined.
Sasuke declined.
The village had offered rank to Sasuke and Sasuke had refused.
That information had been difficult to believe.
Sasuke had wanted acknowledgment as a child.
Not in Naruto’s loud way.
In the way second sons and younger brothers did.
Watch me.
Measure me.
Tell me I reached you.
Itachi had spent years ensuring the final measure would be his death.
Now Sasuke had refused a mark of progress.
Why?
Sakura looked back through the gate.
Someone spoke.
Naruto’s voice.
Then Sasuke’s.
Itachi’s body went still.
Sasuke exited carrying Sakura’s forgotten pouch.
“You left this.”
She took it.
“Thanks.”
No sharpness.
No distance.
Ordinary exchange.
The gate remained open.
Itachi could see inside.
Training posts.
New buildings.
A table on the veranda.
A dark blue futon visible through one partially open room.
A jacket on a hook.
Sasuke’s.
Itachi knew it.
The collar had been repaired near the shoulder.
He had seen Sasuke wear it years ago.
Sasuke had possessions here.
Kisame’s voice became quieter.
“That your brother?”
“Yes.”
“He doesn’t look alone.”
Itachi’s face did not change.
Something beneath it did.
The massacre had left Sasuke alive.
Itachi had built the rest deliberately.
Hatred.
Isolation.
A purpose so singular Sasuke would survive every ordinary attachment because nothing could outweigh revenge.
Sasuke was supposed to remain in the Uchiha compound surrounded by ghosts until the day he became strong enough to kill the brother who created them.
Instead, Hatake Kakashi had given him another key.
The thought felt like betrayal.
Itachi recognised the irrationality.
Did not stop feeling it.
Kisame watched him.
“You planning to say hello?”
“No.”
Below, Sakura walked toward the hospital.
Sasuke remained by the gate.
Naruto appeared behind him.
They argued about something.
Naruto held up a letter.
Sasuke tried to take it.
Naruto moved it out of reach.
The exchange became physical without becoming dangerous.
Two boys wrestling beside the gate.
Itachi remembered Sasuke at five chasing him through the compound.
Again, nii-san.
Again.
Again.
He looked away.
Kisame’s voice lost some humour.
“Ah.”
Itachi’s eyes hardened.
“Mission.”
Kisame shrugged.
“Right.”
Not Sasuke.
Nine-Tails.
Present objective.
Itachi had learned those habits before Team Seven named them.
He did not appreciate recognising the structure.
---
Naruto spotted Kisame because Samehada breathed.
Not literally.
The wrapped sword shifted.
A tiny expansion beneath the bandages.
Like a living thing responding to chakra.
Naruto had left the Hatake compound with Yamato to deliver Sakura’s second pouch after Sasuke discovered she had also forgotten her ID card.
Sakura had become competent enough to command missions and still routinely forgot one item when leaving the house.
Naruto found this reassuring.
Yamato walked beside him.
They crossed the shopping district.
Naruto saw the two men reflected in a glass storefront.
Black cloaks.
Red clouds.
His body reacted before thought.
Heat.
Not fox chakra.
Fear.
He touched Yamato’s wrist.
Not their usual procedure.
Warning.
Yamato did not turn.
“Observed?”
“Reflection. Two. Behind. Red clouds.”
Yamato’s posture did not change.
“Direction?”
“Us.”
“Confirmed?”
Naruto looked again.
The larger man’s gaze was fixed on him.
Yellow eyes.
Blue-grey skin.
The dark-haired one walked slightly ahead.
Red eyes hidden beneath a lowered hat.
Naruto’s stomach tightened.
“S-rank.”
“Yes,” Yamato said quietly.
He had seen the reflection now.
“What is the mission?”
Naruto swallowed.
“Do not engage. Reach senior response.”
“Route?”
“Hospital closer.”
“No.”
Naruto frowned.
Then saw.
Hospital full of civilians and wounded.
“Compound.”
“Too far.”
“Academy?”
Yamato’s jaw tightened.
Worse.
Children.
Naruto’s mind moved.
“Open square. South fountain. No civilians after market close. Signal.”
“Good.”
They turned.
Not running.
Kisame spoke behind them.
“Kid.”
Naruto stopped.
Yamato did not.
One step farther.
Positioned.
Naruto turned.
The larger man grinned.
“So this is the Nine-Tails.”
The words entered the street.
No revelation.
No secret breaking open.
Still, Naruto felt them.
The old village whispers.
Monster.
Fox.
Container.
Mizuki’s voice.
He touched his stomach.
Yamato stepped partly in front of him.
Naruto’s anger rose.
Not at Yamato.
At being reduced.
Kisame looked almost disappointed.
“No screaming?”
Naruto stared.
“Why?”
Kisame’s grin widened.
“Most kids object when strangers announce what’s inside them.”
Naruto looked at the dark-haired man.
Sharingan.
Uchiha.
Itachi.
His whole body tightened.
Team procedure.
Not his target.
Sasuke’s brother.
Sasuke’s wound.
Naruto forced his attention back to Kisame.
“My team already knows.”
Kisame’s expression changed.
A small thing.
Itachi’s changed less.
Naruto saw anyway.
There.
Information lost.
Weapon removed before use.
Itachi looked at him properly.
“So Kakashi told them.”
Naruto’s anger sharpened.
“I did.”
Itachi’s eyes narrowed.
“You chose disclosure.”
“Yeah.”
Silence.
Kisame glanced at Itachi.
“Village getting progressive?”
Naruto hated the word.
Like Konoha had always been kind and simply improved policy.
“No.”
His voice came harder than expected.
“People screwed up. We changed something.”
Itachi stared.
The answer landed somewhere.
Yamato said, “Naruto.”
Signal.
Present mission.
Naruto’s hand moved toward the red flare inside his jacket.
Itachi saw.
Of course he did.
“Do not.”
Naruto froze.
The voice was soft.
Command embedded in tone.
Genjutsu threat.
Yamato formed a seal.
Wood erupted between them.
Naruto fired the flare.
Red light climbed above Konoha.
Itachi’s eyes widened by a fraction.
Kisame laughed.
“Well. That’s inconvenient.”
The flare burst.
Red over the western district.
Senior chakra signatures changed across the village.
Genma.
Raidō.
Kakashi.
Jiraiya.
Several ANBU.
Itachi felt them.
The same response pattern that had driven Orochimaru from Sasuke.
The village answered signals quickly now.
Tiny pieces.
“Withdraw?” Kisame asked.
Itachi looked at Naruto.
The boy’s hand remained near his stomach.
No fox chakra yet.
Yamato’s wood formed a barrier.
“Not yet.”
He needed confirmation.
Not speculation.
Itachi moved.
Yamato blocked.
Kisame drew Samehada.
The sword tore through wood like wet paper.
Naruto jumped backward.
Not engaging.
Signal fired.
Objective: survive until response.
He created clones.
Not to attack.
To confuse capture direction.
Kisame swung.
Three disappeared.
The sword groaned.
Naruto felt chakra pull from a fourth clone before it burst.
His skin crawled.
“Don’t let the sword touch you!”
Yamato already knew.
Itachi appeared behind Naruto.
Too fast.
A hand caught the back of his jacket.
Naruto twisted.
Sharingan filled his vision.
Then Sasuke’s voice cut across the square.
“Let him go.”
Everything stopped.
Sasuke stood on the roof.
Kakashi beside him.
Sakura behind.
Genma and Raidō arriving from opposite sides.
Itachi’s hand remained on Naruto’s jacket.
Sasuke had done what he was supposed to.
He had heard the flare.
He had come with adults.
Not alone.
Itachi looked at him.
Sasuke’s face was pale.
His hands shook.
He remained beside Kakashi.
Good.
The thought came before Itachi could stop it.
He hated himself for it.
Sasuke stared at his brother.
Years collapsed.
Blood.
Nii-san.
Why?
Itachi’s face.
No expression.
Exactly as remembered.
Sasuke’s body wanted to move.
He could feel it.
The need had physical shape.
Chidori without lightning.
A line from his body to Itachi’s heart.
Kakashi touched his shoulder.
Not restraint.
Position.
“Sasuke.”
He breathed.
“Roof. Kakashi left. Sakura behind.”
“Threat?”
“Itachi holding Naruto. Kisame. Senior response incoming.”
“Mission?”
Sasuke’s jaw locked.
He stared at Itachi.
“Recover Naruto. Prevent escape if possible.”
Kakashi’s grip tightened slightly.
“Priority?”
Sasuke hated the answer.
“Naruto.”
Itachi heard.
Of course he did.
Something moved behind his eyes.
He released Naruto.
Not because Sasuke asked.
Because jounin chakra converged.
Naruto jumped toward Yamato.
Sakura caught his sleeve as soon as he reached the roof.
“Any contact?”
“Jacket.”
“Genjutsu?”
“Don’t know.”
“Eyes?”
“Briefly.”
Kakashi looked at Naruto.
“Later.”
Present threat first.
Kisame lifted Samehada.
Jiraiya landed on the fountain.
“Really?”
He looked furious.
“First Orochimaru, now you two. Does nobody respect my retirement plans?”
“You don’t have retirement plans,” Naruto shouted.
“Not relevant!”
Itachi looked toward Jiraiya.
The Sannin’s presence changed the calculation.
Capture impossible without escalation.
Mission could continue another way.
He turned toward Sasuke.
“Later.”
One word.
Sasuke’s body reacted.
Forward.
Kakashi caught him.
“Mission.”
Sasuke snarled.
“They’re leaving!”
“Yes.”
“We stop them!”
“Not at the cost of Naruto.”
“I’m here!” Naruto shouted.
Kakashi did not look away from Itachi.
“Unknown genjutsu exposure.”
Sasuke’s breathing came fast.
Itachi watched.
Hatake had given Sasuke a framework.
Not obedience.
Interruptions.
Sasuke was using it.
Barely.
Itachi needed to know whether it could break.
He formed one seal.
Crows erupted.
The square became black wings.
Kurenai arrived from the eastern lane.
Asuma from the north.
ANBU sealed exits.
For three seconds, Konoha seemed to close around Akatsuki.
Then the crows vanished.
Itachi and Kisame were gone.
The senior shinobi immediately split into pursuit and containment teams.
No one celebrated.
Naruto leaned against the roof tiles.
Sakura checked his pupils.
Sasuke stared at the place Itachi had been.
His hands did not stop shaking.
Kakashi looked at him.
“Report.”
Sasuke’s voice came rough.
“Functional.”
Naruto saw.
Bad answer.
Not false exactly.
Incomplete.
They would come back to it.
---
Itachi left a crow feather in the Uchiha compound.
Sasuke found out because he looked.
He told Kakashi before going.
That mattered.
“I want to check the district.”
Kakashi stood in the Hatake kitchen, where Tsunade was examining Naruto for genjutsu residue while Naruto complained that everyone kept shining lights in his eyes.
“Why?”
“Itachi was in the village.”
“Yes.”
“He may have gone there.”
“Possible.”
Sasuke waited.
Kakashi understood.
This was Sasuke’s home too.
The massacre site.
The brother’s likely contact point.
“Conditions?”
Sasuke had prepared.
“You come. Naruto and Sakura stay.”
Naruto immediately objected.
“What?”
Sasuke looked at him.
“This is the Uchiha compound.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
“Yes.”
The boundary was sharp.
Naruto stopped.
Seeing was not permission.
Sasuke continued.
“If there is evidence relevant to village security, Kakashi reports it. Personal content is mine unless it changes immediate threat.”
Kakashi nodded.
“Acceptable.”
Naruto crossed his arms.
“I don’t like it.”
“I know.”
Sasuke’s voice softened by a fraction.
“You don’t have to.”
Naruto glared.
Then nodded.
Sakura looked at Sasuke.
“Return time?”
“One hour.”
“And if you’re late?”
“Kakashi sends Pakkun.”
Specific.
They went.
The Uchiha district felt different after nights at the Hatake compound.
Sasuke hated that.
The streets seemed more empty because he knew what occupied rooms sounded like now.
Doors closing.
Naruto yelling from upstairs.
Sakura moving cups.
Kakashi pretending he was not waiting for everyone to return.
The Uchiha compound had once contained all those sounds.
Sasuke remembered them more vividly after learning new versions elsewhere.
He unlocked his house.
No disturbance.
Kakashi remained near the entrance.
Sasuke searched.
Kitchen.
Hall.
Parents’ room.
His room.
Then Itachi’s old room.
The feather lay on the windowsill.
Black.
Ordinary.
Sasuke stopped.
Kakashi saw.
Did not enter.
Sasuke approached.
The feather shifted.
Genjutsu.
A message appeared on the wall.
Not writing.
A memory.
Their father standing beneath the clan crest.
Two words.
**Ask why.**
Then gone.
Sasuke’s breathing changed.
Kakashi remained outside.
“What happened?”
“Personal.”
“Immediate threat?”
“I don’t know.”
Honest.
Kakashi waited.
Sasuke stared at the wall.
Ask why.
Why what?
Why the massacre?
Why Itachi?
Why the village?
Why Sasuke lived?
Itachi knew Sasuke had begun asking.
Had he returned partly because of that?
The thought made his skin cold.
“Kakashi.”
“Yes.”
“I need Shikaku.”
“Today?”
Sasuke’s jaw tightened.
“No.”
The right answer cost him.
“Tomorrow.”
Kakashi nodded.
They left within the return time.
At the Hatake gate, Naruto waited.
He pretended not to.
Sasuke walked past.
Naruto did not ask.
That mattered too.
---
The next morning, Sasuke found a second message.
This one arrived through a crow that landed on the Hatake training post.
The compound seal chimed.
No authorised signature.
Barrier flared.
The crow remained outside.
Naruto saw it from the porch.
“Sasuke.”
Sasuke came out.
Black feathers.
Red eyes.
Sharingan.
Kakashi was beside him almost instantly.
No one touched the bird.
Jiraiya examined the seal layer.
“Genjutsu carrier.”
Sasuke looked at Kakashi.
“I want to hear it.”
Kakashi’s visible eye tightened.
“Conditions.”
“Everyone present.”
Naruto looked surprised.
Sakura too.
Sasuke continued.
“Jiraiya disrupts if chakra spikes.”
Kakashi nodded.
“Good.”
Sasuke faced the crow.
“Release.”
Jiraiya altered the compound barrier.
The bird flew to the post.
Its red eyes met Sasuke’s.
The world changed.
Not fully.
A projection.
Itachi standing in an ANBU corridor.
Younger.
Thirteen.
Mask in hand.
Someone off-screen spoke.
**The clan will move soon.**
The image shifted.
Fugaku seated in shadow.
His mother pouring tea.
Adults arguing beyond a paper wall.
**They already suspect him.**
Shift.
Itachi kneeling before three silhouettes.
One visible eye behind bandages.
Sasuke’s breath stopped.
Danzō.
He knew the face now.
The image blurred before confirmation became certainty.
Itachi’s present voice entered.
“You study reports.”
Sasuke’s hands shook.
“You ask the village why I killed them.”
Naruto went still.
Sakura’s face went pale.
Kakashi’s hand tightened.
The image of Itachi looked directly at Sasuke.
“Ask instead why the village needed you to believe I acted alone.”
Then the crow burst into smoke.
Sasuke did not move.
No Tsukuyomi.
No attack.
Only information.
Or manipulated imagery.
Jiraiya immediately checked chakra.
“Carrier gone.”
Naruto stared at Sasuke.
Sakura said, “Report.”
Sasuke’s mouth opened.
Nothing came.
Kakashi stepped closer.
“Position.”
“Hatake compound.”
“People?”
He named them.
“Kakashi. Naruto. Sakura. Jiraiya.”
“Threat?”
Sasuke’s throat tightened.
“Itachi.”
“Present?”
“No.”
“Mission?”
Sasuke looked at the empty post.
“I don’t know.”
There.
The failure point.
Not a failure of character.
Information indicating they stopped.
Kakashi’s voice softened.
“Then no pursuit.”
Sasuke snapped.
“He showed Danzō.”
“Maybe.”
“You know what I saw.”
“I know what a genjutsu showed you.”
Sasuke’s eyes flashed.
“You think it’s fake.”
“I think Itachi chose every image.”
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
Kakashi’s honesty made the anger harder.
Sasuke turned toward Jiraiya.
“You knew Danzō ran Root.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Itachi was ANBU.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the clan was under suspicion.”
Jiraiya went still.
Naruto looked at him.
Sakura too.
Kakashi’s face tightened.
Sasuke saw.
There were things.
Not all known.
Enough.
“You all know pieces.”
His voice rose.
“Again.”
Naruto flinched because the sentence belonged to him too.
Jiraiya stood.
“I did not know the details of the Uchiha operation.”
“Operation.”
Sasuke laughed once.
Horrible sound.
“You call my family an operation.”
“I used the wrong word.”
“You used the word you think.”
Jiraiya accepted the hit.
Sasuke turned toward Kakashi.
“And you?”
Kakashi’s visible eye lowered.
“I knew tension existed between the clan and village leadership.”
“You never told me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it was classified.”
Sasuke’s face changed.
The answer that had once been normal now sounded obscene.
Kakashi knew.
He continued.
“And because I did not think enough about what withholding it meant to you.”
Sasuke’s hands closed.
“Do you know if Itachi acted alone?”
Kakashi’s silence lasted one second too long.
Sasuke stepped backward.
Naruto saw the world tilt inside him.
“Sasuke.”
“Don’t.”
Naruto stopped.
Sasuke looked at all of them.
“The village version might be a lie.”
“Yes,” Kakashi said.
Everyone stared.
Sasuke froze.
Kakashi continued.
“I do not know that it is. I know there are inconsistencies.”
Shikaku’s lessons.
Reports.
Missing records.
Incentives.
Sasuke’s breathing became shallow.
“How long?”
“I began reviewing after your questions about Root.”
Not years.
Recent.
That mattered slightly.
Not enough.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“We had insufficient evidence.”
Sasuke almost shouted.
“That’s my family!”
“Yes.”
“Then I should decide what insufficient means!”
Kakashi’s eye closed briefly.
“Yes.”
The agreement stopped Sasuke more effectively than defence would have.
Kakashi looked at him.
“I was wrong not to tell you that the review existed.”
Naruto stared.
Sakura’s eyes filled.
Sasuke did not know what to do with an adult admitting fault before being cornered into it.
Itachi’s message remained.
Ask why the village needed you to believe I acted alone.
Sasuke looked toward the gate.
One hour to the Uchiha district.
Eastern road beyond.
Itachi somewhere outside.
Answers.
He could go.
His body leaned.
Naruto saw.
“Mission.”
Sasuke turned violently.
“Stop saying that!”
Naruto flinched.
Then anger arrived.
“No!”
Sasuke stepped toward him.
“This isn’t your mission!”
“No, it’s not!”
“Then stay out of it!”
Naruto’s chest tightened.
Old fear.
Leaving.
Sasuke’s pain becoming distance.
He forced himself not to make that the answer.
“I’m not saying don’t find out.”
Sasuke stared.
“I’m saying you don’t know what you’re doing right now.”
“I know exactly—”
“No!”
Naruto’s voice rose.
“You don’t even know if you’re chasing Itachi or the truth or Danzō or trying to prove everybody lied!”
Sasuke punched him.
The room stopped.
Naruto hit the ground.
Sakura moved.
Kakashi lifted one hand.
Not yet.
Naruto touched his mouth.
Blood.
Sasuke stared at his own fist.
Shock.
He had not meant—
No.
He had.
For half a second, he wanted Naruto silent more than he wanted to remain in control.
Naruto stood.
He did not hit back.
That made Sasuke angrier.
“Fight me.”
“No.”
“Fight me!”
“No!”
Naruto wiped the blood.
“You’re proving his point.”
Sasuke froze.
Itachi.
Power that does not ask permission from frightened teammates.
Sever what weakens you.
Anger became nausea.
Sasuke looked at his hand.
Sakura spoke.
Quiet.
“Real question.”
He looked at her.
“Do you want to leave the compound right now?”
Sasuke’s throat closed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To find him.”
“Why?”
“Because he knows.”
“Do you know where he is?”
“No.”
“Do you know whether the images were true?”
“No.”
“Do you know what he wants you to do?”
Sasuke looked toward the gate.
Leave.
Chase.
Isolate.
Predictable.
His knees felt weak.
“No.”
Sakura’s voice softened.
“Then what do you know?”
Sasuke looked at Naruto’s bleeding lip.
At Kakashi’s lowered hand.
At Jiraiya standing still.
At the post where the crow had been.
“He wants me moving.”
Shikaku’s lessons.
What does the attacker want you to do?
Sasuke’s eyes filled.
He hated it.
The manipulation was real because the information might also be real.
That was worse than a lie.
Kakashi said, “Good.”
Sasuke turned on him.
“Don’t.”
Kakashi nodded.
Fair.
Sasuke sat on the porch step.
His body shook.
Naruto sat three feet away.
Not touching.
Sasuke looked at his split lip.
“Sorry.”
Naruto shrugged.
“Bad apology.”
“I know.”
“Later.”
Specific.
Sasuke nodded.
Later.
He did not leave.
Itachi, watching through a distant crow before the connection broke, saw that too.
---
Itachi changed tactics.
Kisame noticed.
“You’re angry.”
“No.”
“You’re definitely angry.”
Itachi stood on a ridge overlooking Konoha’s eastern forest.
“He stayed.”
Kisame leaned Samehada against a tree.
“Your brother?”
“Yes.”
“That’s bad?”
Itachi said nothing.
Kisame scratched his chin.
“You wanted him to chase.”
“I wanted to assess him.”
“You sent a message designed to make him chase.”
Itachi’s eyes hardened.
Kisame grinned.
“Assess him while he chased.”
Silence.
Kisame was not stupid.
Crude was not stupid.
Itachi looked toward Konoha.
Sasuke had struck Naruto.
Then stopped.
Not immediately.
Enough.
He had not crossed the gate.
Hatake’s framework held.
No.
Sasuke held.
The distinction irritated Itachi more.
He had told himself for years that Sasuke needed hatred because hatred was the only force strong enough to survive the truth.
Now other structures existed.
Questions.
Team procedures.
A house.
Itachi remembered Kakashi as an ANBU captain.
Young.
Not as young as Itachi had been when promoted, but close enough.
Hatake had understood obedience too well.
Perhaps that was why he recognised what Sasuke needed.
The thought became intolerable.
Kisame looked at him.
“Still want the jinchūriki?”
“Yes.”
Mission.
Akatsuki.
Not Sasuke.
Itachi turned away from the village.
Then felt chakra.
Kakashi.
Approaching without concealment.
Alone?
No.
Jiraiya several hundred metres behind.
Genma and Raidō flanking.
A controlled meeting.
Itachi almost laughed.
Sasuke had reported the crow.
Of course.
Information spread.
The village had become inconvenient.
“Stay,” Itachi told Kisame.
Kisame looked offended.
“You get all the interesting family conversations.”
“This is not family.”
“That’s what makes it interesting.”
Itachi left him.
---
Kakashi met Itachi at the old river where ANBU recruits once practised silent crossings.
That was not an accident.
Itachi chose the place.
Kakashi knew.
Jiraiya remained out of sight.
Not because Itachi could not sense him.
Because conversation required the pretence of space.
Kakashi stood on the bank.
Itachi across the water.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Kakashi saw thirteen.
ANBU uniform too large at the shoulders.
Eyes already tired beyond childhood.
He had once thought Itachi’s composure enviable.
Proof of discipline.
Now Kakashi knew what children looked like when usefulness consumed every other role.
“You targeted Naruto,” Kakashi said.
“Reconnaissance.”
“You touched him.”
“No injury.”
“That is not a defence.”
Itachi’s gaze sharpened.
“Kakashi-san.”
The old honorific struck.
Captain.
Senior.
Someone Itachi had once been expected to obey.
Kakashi hated it.
“You showed Sasuke Danzō.”
“Did I?”
“Do not.”
Itachi’s face remained blank.
Kakashi continued.
“If you want him to hate you, use your own actions.”
A flicker.
Small.
“Do not hand him half a village crime and make him build the rest around himself.”
Itachi’s eyes became colder.
“You believe the village is innocent?”
“No.”
The answer stopped him.
Kakashi looked across the river.
“I think we failed your clan.”
Itachi’s face did not move.
“And?”
“I think you committed the massacre.”
A crow called somewhere above.
Both truths.
No absolution through institutional blame.
No simplification through individual guilt.
Itachi’s voice lowered.
“You know nothing.”
“Yes.”
Kakashi’s hand remained away from his kunai.
“I know you were made ANBU captain while you were still a child.”
Itachi’s eyes narrowed.
“I know adults praised your ability to perform tasks they should have been ashamed to assign.”
“Do not compare me to yourself.”
The reaction came fast.
Kakashi saw.
Pain.
“I wasn’t.”
“You think because you were promoted young—”
“I think they made you useful before anyone asked what usefulness was doing to you.”
The sentence entered.
Itachi’s face changed.
Not much.
Enough.
Kakashi continued.
“They did it to me too.”
Itachi looked toward the water.
For one second, the mask slipped.
Not confession.
Recognition rejected as soon as felt.
“You survived.”
Kakashi’s throat tightened.
“Some of me.”
Silence.
Itachi looked back.
“You gave Sasuke a home.”
There.
Not mission.
Not Naruto.
Kakashi’s visible eye sharpened.
“He already had one.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
Kakashi thought of the Hatake key in Sasuke’s pouch.
“He chose another place too.”
Itachi’s jaw tightened.
“You encourage him to forget.”
“No.”
Kakashi’s voice hardened.
“I encourage him to live while remembering.”
Itachi stared.
“That is a luxury.”
“No.”
Kakashi stepped closer to the water.
“It is the thing you took from him.”
The air changed.
Sharingan activated.
Kakashi did not look away.
He knew the risk.
Jiraiya shifted in the trees.
Kakashi raised two fingers.
Stay.
Itachi’s voice became quiet.
“He must become strong enough.”
“For what?”
“To kill me.”
The answer finally spoken.
Kakashi’s stomach turned.
“You still think that is his job.”
“It is his right.”
“Those are not the same.”
Itachi’s eyes sharpened.
Kakashi continued.
“You murdered his family and decided the appropriate compensation was to design the rest of his life around murdering you.”
Itachi’s chakra spiked.
Kakashi almost smiled.
Not mockery.
Evidence.
“You don’t get to choose how he survives what you did.”
“He needs hatred.”
“No.”
“You do not know what waits for him.”
“Neither does he.”
“That is why—”
“That is why you keep forcing the answer before he can ask the question.”
Itachi went completely still.
Kakashi saw the boy beneath the Akatsuki cloak.
Prodigy.
Captain.
Brother.
Weapon.
A child who had been offered impossible choices and then made impossible choices for everyone else because he believed suffering alone made him qualified.
Kakashi knew that disease.
He had carried a milder form.
“I do not know the truth,” Kakashi said.
Itachi watched him.
“I know Sasuke deserves it.”
No response.
“And I know if you tell him pieces only to control where he runs, you are doing the same thing as whoever controlled you.”
That hit.
Itachi’s Sharingan spun.
The world vanished.
---
Tsukuyomi caught Kakashi for an instant in real time.
Inside, he stood in an ANBU corridor.
Itachi at thirteen.
Blood on the floor.
Danzō’s voice behind a screen.
Fugaku’s face.
Shisui falling.
Sasuke crying.
Images too fast to authenticate.
Kakashi understood immediately.
Not revelation.
Punishment.
Itachi wanted him to feel uncertainty without control.
Kakashi’s hand moved.
North.
East.
South.
No team inside genjutsu.
He named what remained.
Kakashi.
Tsukuyomi.
Itachi.
Not evidence.
Manipulated environment.
Present objective: return.
The illusion changed.
Rin.
Chidori.
Obito.
Sakumo.
The old weapons.
Itachi knew enough to arrange them.
Kakashi’s knees nearly buckled.
Then Naruto’s voice existed in memory.
You heard me. That’s part of a team.
Kakashi looked at Rin.
Not present.
He looked at Sakumo.
Not present.
At Itachi.
Present threat.
“Interesting,” Itachi said.
Kakashi woke on one knee.
Less than one second had passed.
Blood ran from beneath his Sharingan.
Jiraiya appeared beside him.
Conversation over.
Genma and Raidō moved from the trees.
Itachi stepped backward.
Kakashi breathed.
“Functional.”
Jiraiya looked at him.
“Bad answer.”
Kakashi almost laughed.
The infection was complete.
“Genjutsu exposure. Disoriented. No motor impairment.”
“Better.”
Itachi watched.
Adults reporting weakness in front of subordinates.
No shame.
No concealment.
The structure Sasuke was learning existed above him too.
Something inside Itachi twisted.
Kisame appeared on the opposite bank.
“Time.”
Itachi looked at Kakashi.
Then said, “Ask your Hokage what he ordered.”
Kakashi’s face hardened.
Itachi and Kisame disappeared into the trees.
No pursuit.
Jiraiya made the decision before Kakashi could.
“They want us chasing.”
Kakashi looked at him.
“Good.”
Jiraiya grimaced.
“Don’t make me Shikaku.”
They returned.
---
Sasuke heard Itachi’s message from Kakashi.
No omission.
No delayed review.
No adults deciding he was too fragile.
Kakashi sat at the Hatake table with an ice pack against his eye.
Tsunade had checked him.
Declared no lasting damage.
Then threatened to hospitalise him if he used Sharingan again that day.
Naruto sat opposite.
Split lip swollen.
Sakura beside him.
Sasuke at the end.
Jiraiya near the door.
Shikaku had arrived because the content affected intelligence review.
Kakashi repeated exactly:
“Ask your Hokage what he ordered.”
Sasuke stared.
The Third.
Itachi.
Danzō.
The clan.
Orders.
The pieces began arranging themselves without permission.
“Did the Hokage order it?”
Shikaku answered.
“We do not know.”
Sasuke looked at him.
“You’ve reviewed the files.”
“Some.”
“What’s missing?”
Shikaku’s expression tightened.
“Several relevant ANBU logs were sealed separately after the massacre. Root records are incomplete. Some council minutes contain redactions no longer supported by surviving authorisation chains.”
Naruto frowned.
“Normal words.”
“Someone removed information.”
The room chilled.
Sasuke’s hands became fists.
“Danzō.”
“Possible,” Shikaku said.
“You know Yamato was Root.”
“Yes.”
“You know Itachi worked for ANBU.”
“Yes.”
“You know my clan was planning something.”
Shikaku did not answer immediately.
Sasuke’s eyes flashed.
“Say it.”
“There is credible evidence elements of the Uchiha leadership were preparing a coup.”
Sakura inhaled.
Naruto looked at Sasuke.
Sasuke’s face emptied.
A coup.
His father.
Clan meetings.
Itachi’s distance.
Adults whispering.
The massacre did not become reasonable.
It became larger.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
The question was smaller than before.
More dangerous.
Shikaku looked at him.
“Because the information remained classified.”
Sasuke laughed bitterly.
“There it is.”
“And because,” Shikaku continued, “the village has historically treated surviving children as extensions of the classified event rather than people affected by it.”
The sentence hurt everyone.
Naruto looked down.
His own life.
Classified event.
Nine-Tails.
Sasuke swallowed.
“What happens now?”
Shikaku placed a file on the table.
Not the massacre report.
Training material.
“We verify.”
Sasuke stared.
“You’re still not giving me the files.”
“No.”
Anger rose.
Shikaku held it.
“But I am requesting formal review of your access because Itachi has begun using classified information to influence you.”
Sasuke froze.
“That changes the operational risk.”
Power in stating context.
Not favour.
Not pity.
“You may not receive everything,” Shikaku said. “You should receive enough to recognise manipulation.”
Sasuke’s throat tightened.
“When?”
“I will have an answer in three days.”
Specific.
Not eventually.
Three days.
Sasuke nodded.
The anger remained.
It could survive alongside waiting.
Naruto looked at him.
“Are you leaving?”
Sasuke glared.
The question was blunt.
Fair.
“No.”
His voice shook.
“Today.”
Naruto nodded.
Today.
Sakura’s fingers touched the edge of Sasuke’s sleeve.
He did not move away.
---
Itachi did not leave Fire Country immediately.
He watched.
That was his failure.
Mission logic said return to Akatsuki.
Report Nine-Tails confirmed.
Security increased.
Jiraiya present.
Konoha coordination stronger than intelligence predicted.
Sand alliance altered.
He had enough.
Instead, he remained two nights.
Kisame complained.
Not seriously.
Itachi watched the Hatake compound from distances no ordinary sensor would catch.
Naruto trained sealing with Jiraiya.
Sakura left before dawn for the hospital.
Sasuke went to jounin command.
Kakashi sat on the porch reading but turned no pages.
Yamato repaired the north fence.
Iruka arrived with Academy forms.
People came and went.
A place.
Itachi remembered the Uchiha compound before suspicion consumed it.
Neighbours entering without knocking.
Children carrying food between houses.
His mother leaving tea for cousins.
His father discussing patrol rotations at the table.
Community becoming conspiracy in the eyes of the village.
Conspiracy becoming massacre.
He had destroyed the place to prevent war.
That was the story he had chosen.
The truth contained more.
He did not allow himself to follow it.
Below, Sasuke returned.
Naruto shouted something from the roof.
Sasuke looked up.
For one second, he smiled.
Small.
Unconscious.
Itachi’s chest tightened.
That smile had once belonged to him.
No.
Not belonged.
Sasuke had given it.
There was a difference.
Kisame sat on the branch beside him.
“You know, if your goal was to make him hate you, this seems inefficient.”
Itachi did not respond.
“He looks pretty mad already.”
Silence.
Kisame looked toward the compound.
“Kid’s got people.”
“Yes.”
“You planning to fix that?”
Itachi’s head turned.
Kisame raised both hands.
“Just asking.”
“No.”
The answer came too fast.
Kisame grinned.
“There he is.”
Itachi looked away.
Akatsuki would eventually come for Naruto.
If Itachi remained within it, he might be ordered to participate.
If Sasuke stood beside Naruto—
No.
Mission.
He stood.
“We leave.”
Kisame lifted Samehada.
“Finally.”
Itachi looked at the Hatake sign once.
The orange line around the old symbol.
Repair that was not replication.
Then he left Fire Country.
---
Sasuke’s three-day wait was worse than any fight.
On the first day, he trained.
Too hard.
Kakashi let him continue until his breathing changed.
Then said, “Report.”
Sasuke nearly threw the kunai at him.
Instead:
“Left wrist pain. Moderate.”
“Stop?”
“No.”
“Modify?”
“Yes.”
They switched to footwork.
Sasuke hated that adaptation worked.
On the second day, he went to the Uchiha compound alone.
With permission.
Not because he needed permission to enter his own house.
Because he told people where he was going.
Naruto did not come.
That mattered.
Sasuke sat in his parents’ room.
A coup.
His father might have planned to overthrow the Hokage.
His mother had known?
Itachi had known.
What did a child do when every adult in his family carried secrets?
He looked at the tatami.
Blood no longer visible.
Still there.
He wanted Itachi dead.
That had not changed.
He wanted answers.
That had grown.
He realised for the first time those goals might conflict.
If Sasuke killed Itachi before learning everything Itachi knew, the truth could die with him.
The thought made him nauseous.
For years, strength had meant the ability to kill Itachi.
Now intelligence introduced a terrible possibility:
**Killing him too soon could be another way of losing.**
Sasuke sat for hours.
Then returned to Hatake before the time he promised.
Naruto looked up from sealing practice.
Did not ask.
Sasuke went to his room.
Some nights.
A second home.
He closed the door.
No one followed.
On the third day, Shikaku arrived before breakfast.
Sasuke was already awake.
Everyone was.
The compound had learned anxiety too.
Shikaku carried one thin folder.
Sasuke stared.
“That’s it?”
“For now.”
Sasuke’s face hardened.
Shikaku sat at the table.
Kakashi remained.
Naruto and Sakura started to leave.
Sasuke looked at them.
“Stay.”
They stopped.
Choice.
Team property now because Sasuke made it so.
Shikaku opened the file.
“The Hokage authorised disclosure of several facts. Not source documents.”
Sasuke’s jaw tightened.
“Facts verified across multiple independent records.”
Better than one report.
Shikaku continued.
“One: Uchiha leadership was under surveillance for suspected coup planning.”
Sasuke swallowed.
“Two: Itachi served as an ANBU operative and maintained direct reporting relationships outside ordinary Uchiha clan channels.”
“Danzō.”
“Not confirmed in the authorised material.”
Sasuke glared.
Shikaku waited.
“Three: Shisui Uchiha died shortly before the massacre under circumstances still classified and disputed.”
Sasuke’s hands tightened.
He remembered Shisui vaguely.
Older.
Kind.
Itachi’s friend.
“Four: the massacre was followed by immediate high-level sealing of records inconsistent with an ordinary rogue-shinobi event.”
Sakura’s face changed.
Meaning someone expected political implications.
“Five,” Shikaku said, voice lower, “Sasuke Uchiha was placed under observation after the massacre.”
Sasuke stopped breathing.
Naruto looked at him.
“Why?”
Shikaku’s gaze held Sasuke’s.
“The surviving authorisation does not state.”
Sasuke’s stomach turned.
Observed.
Child Sasuke alone in the compound.
Someone watching.
Not helping.
Watching.
“How long?”
“Years.”
Kakashi went completely still.
He had not known that.
Sasuke saw.
That mattered.
“Who?”
“Records route through a defunct administrative channel associated with Root procurement.”
Yamato’s voice.
Danzō.
Sasuke stood so fast the chair fell.
Naruto rose too.
Not blocking.
Position.
Sasuke walked toward the door.
Kakashi said, “Mission?”
Sasuke turned.
Rage.
“Find Danzō.”
“Objective?”
“Ask why.”
“Immediate plan?”
Sasuke opened his mouth.
Nothing.
He wanted to confront an elder with Root guards, classified authority and decades of power.
No plan.
Shikaku spoke.
“You finding this out before confronting him is why intelligence matters.”
Sasuke’s eyes burned.
“They watched me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
Shikaku looked genuinely angry.
Quietly.
“That channel should have been dissolved.”
Yamato appeared in the doorway.
He had heard enough.
His face went blank in the old Root way.
Sasuke saw.
Not emotionless.
Protecting.
“Did Root watch me?”
Yamato’s throat moved.
“I do not know.”
“Would they?”
“Yes.”
Immediate.
Honest.
“Why?”
Yamato looked toward the table.
“Potential leverage.”
The room became cold.
Naruto’s hands closed.
Sakura’s face went pale.
Sasuke whispered, “Against Itachi.”
“Possibly.”
“Against the clan?”
“Possibly.”
“Against me?”
“Yes.”
Sasuke looked toward the gate.
His whole life rearranged.
What if leaving him alive had served more than Itachi?
What if someone in Konoha wanted a surviving Uchiha?
What if a child’s hatred was useful because it kept him pointed outward?
What if Danzō expected Sasuke to kill Itachi eventually?
Then Itachi dies.
Sasuke remains.
Last Uchiha.
Controlled.
Or broken.
Or both brothers eliminate one another.
The thought was too large.
He said it aloud.
“What if they wanted us to kill each other?”
No one answered.
That was worse.
Naruto stepped closer.
Sasuke looked at him.
The rage wanted a target.
Danzō.
Itachi.
The Hokage.
Konoha.
Anyone.
Naruto did not offer one.
“What do you know?” Naruto asked.
Sasuke laughed bitterly.
“Nothing.”
“Not true.”
Sasuke glared.
Naruto counted on his fingers.
“Someone watched you.”
“Yes.”
“Root channel.”
“Yes.”
“Reason missing.”
“Yes.”
“Itachi wants you to think the village made him do it.”
Sasuke flinched.
Naruto continued.
“He wants you moving before you know.”
“Yes.”
“What’s missing?”
Everything.
Sasuke’s breathing slowed by one fraction.
“Why I lived.”
“Yeah.”
“Who ordered surveillance.”
“Yeah.”
“Whether the coup was real.”
Shikaku interjected.
“Credible evidence says planning existed. Scope remains unclear.”
Sasuke nodded reluctantly.
“What happened to Shisui.”
“Yeah.”
“What the Hokage knew.”
Everyone looked toward Kakashi.
He said, “Valid.”
Sasuke looked at Yamato.
“What Danzō wanted.”
Yamato’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
The rage did not disappear.
It gained edges.
Questions.
Power.
Sasuke picked up the fallen chair.
Set it upright.
His hands shook badly.
“I’m not confronting Danzō today.”
Kakashi’s shoulders lowered.
Shikaku nodded.
No praise.
Sasuke stared.
“But I want in.”
“Into what?”
“The investigation.”
Shikaku folded his hands.
“You are personally involved.”
“I know.”
“That creates bias.”
“I know.”
“It also gives you context others lack.”
Sasuke waited.
Shikaku sighed.
“Supervised.”
“Yes.”
“Restricted documents remain restricted.”
Sasuke’s mouth tightened.
“Review basis must be stated.”
Shikaku looked at him.
Sasuke had learned.
“If you say no, tell me why.”
A tiny smile appeared.
“Accepted.”
Sasuke sat.
Naruto breathed.
Sakura reached for the tea.
Her hands shook too.
Kakashi looked toward the old Hatake sign visible through the window.
Repair without replication.
Sasuke did not need the village to be innocent in order to remain.
The village might have harmed him.
People inside it certainly had.
He could still choose how to investigate.
That distinction became the next structure beneath his feet.
---
Itachi’s final message arrived after he had already left Fire Country.
Not to Sasuke.
To Kakashi.
A crow landed on the Hatake wall at dawn.
The seal chimed.
Kakashi stood beneath it alone.
The bird spoke in Itachi’s voice.
“He is asking better questions.”
Kakashi’s face hardened.
The crow continued.
“Do not teach him to trust your answers simply because they are kinder.”
Then it vanished.
Kakashi stared at the empty wall.
Anger.
Agreement.
Both.
Naruto appeared behind him.
“What?”
Kakashi turned.
“Message.”
“From Itachi?”
“Yes.”
Naruto waited.
Kakashi could keep the content.
Personal.
But it concerned Sasuke.
“Get him.”
Sasuke came out.
Sakura behind.
Kakashi repeated the message.
Sasuke’s face became unreadable.
He looked toward the eastern horizon.
Itachi gone.
Still controlling the room.
Sasuke said, “He wants me suspicious.”
“Yes.”
Naruto crossed his arms.
“Some stuff is suspicious.”
“Yes.”
Sakura looked at Sasuke.
“What do you do with that?”
Sasuke thought.
Old answer:
Choose the suspicion that matches the wound.
New answer:
Verify.
“He doesn’t get to decide who I trust.”
Kakashi’s eye softened.
Sasuke continued.
“Neither does Konoha.”
Naruto nodded.
“Good.”
Sasuke glared.
“Stop saying good.”
“That was me.”
“Same problem.”
Sakura laughed.
Small.
The tension cracked.
Kakashi looked at all three.
Itachi had come home and left without the fight Sasuke had dreamed of.
No dramatic revenge.
No curse mark.
No final truth.
Instead, he had opened the ground.
The Uchiha massacre was no longer a single act floating outside village history.
Danzō’s name existed near the edges.
Root.
Coup.
Shisui.
Surveillance.
A child preserved for reasons no surviving file stated.
Sasuke had more reasons to leave than before.
That frightened Kakashi.
He also had more reasons to stay long enough to understand.
That was new.
---
Naruto wrote to Gaara that evening.
The letter took two pages.
He did not describe classified Uchiha details.
He wrote:
**Two people from Akatsuki came. One was Sasuke's brother. The other one called me the Nine Tails like that was my whole name. It was weird because Sakura and Sasuke already know, so he couldn't use it like Mizuki did. I still hated it. Maybe knowing who you are doesn't mean you stop hating when people only see the thing inside.**
He paused.
Jiraiya sat across the table reviewing seal diagrams.
Naruto continued.
**Sasuke got really angry and punched me. I am writing that because he said I could. He apologised badly. We are working on it.**
Sasuke, reading an intelligence primer nearby, looked up.
“You didn’t need to include the quality.”
“It’s accurate.”
“It was an apology.”
“Bad one.”
Sasuke went back to reading.
Naruto smiled.
Then wrote:
**His brother showed him things that might be true and might be lies. Shikaku says that's worse because the best manipulation uses things that are partly true. I think maybe that's like bad seals because if every line was wrong you would know not to use it.**
Jiraiya looked over.
“That’s actually good.”
Naruto covered the page.
“No permission.”
Jiraiya returned to his diagram.
Naruto added:
**How do you tell when Shukaku says something true but wants you to do something bad with it? You don't have to answer if that's private.**
He signed.
**Present.**
Gaara replied nine days later.
His handwriting remained precise.
**Shukaku says people fear me. That is true. He says therefore I should kill them before they act. Temari fears me and still comes when I call. The first statement does not prove the second.**
Naruto read that aloud at dinner.
Sasuke stopped eating.
“Again.”
Naruto read it.
The first statement does not prove the second.
Sasuke looked down at his bowl.
Konoha hid information.
That did not prove Orochimaru was honest.
Itachi had been used.
That did not prove his massacre was justified.
Root watched Sasuke.
That did not prove every person in Konoha wanted to manipulate him.
Sasuke wanted revenge.
That did not prove revenge required isolation.
One statement.
Then the next.
Do not let pain write the conclusion between them.
“Write back,” Sasuke said.
Naruto grinned.
“What?”
“Tell him that was useful.”
Naruto stared.
“You can write him.”
Sasuke’s face closed.
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t correspond.”
“You write Kankurō.”
“That’s intelligence.”
“Kankurō writes insults.”
“He includes intelligence.”
Naruto pushed paper toward Sasuke.
Sasuke glared.
Then wrote one line.
**The first statement does not prove the second. I am using that. —Sasuke**
Naruto looked delighted.
“Aw.”
“Say that and I burn it.”
Naruto immediately folded the page.
---
Konoha changed its Akatsuki protocols after the encounter.
Not publicly.
Ibiki chaired the review.
Genma contributed route observations.
Raidō noted Akatsuki’s willingness to leave witnesses.
Yamato provided Samehada-contact effects.
Kakashi documented Tsukuyomi exposure honestly.
Sakura wrote Naruto’s post-contact medical observations.
Naruto submitted his own report using the simplified form.
**What changed?**
Enemy knows identity.
Team already knew so reveal did not work.
**What is missing?**
Why Akatsuki wants bijū.
How many members.
How they find jinchūriki.
Why Itachi came now.
His handwriting remained uneven.
The information did not.
Ibiki read it twice.
Then added a new recommendation to village jinchūriki security planning:
**Controlled disclosure to trusted operational teammates may reduce adversarial leverage created by involuntary revelation.**
The Third read the sentence.
Thought of Naruto asking permission.
Signed.
Another tiny rule altered because an enemy expected shame and found preparation instead.
Shikaku expanded the Uchiha review.
The Hokage authorised a limited audit of Root-connected post-massacre observation channels.
Danzō learned within a day.
His concern became action.
Not yet visible.
But old networks began moving.
One clerk disappeared from an office.
A record box was transferred without approval.
Yamato noticed the request signature.
He told Shikaku.
Information entered before the records vanished entirely.
The investigation widened.
Itachi had intended to shake Sasuke loose.
Instead, he had caused Konoha to look more closely at the foundations beneath him.
That would have consequences.
Some Itachi might not want.
Some he might.
No one knew.
---
Sasuke returned to the Uchiha compound every third night after Itachi left.
He did not abandon it.
He did not stay there alone every night either.
The pattern became his.
Hatake.
Uchiha.
Hatake.
Uchiha.
Sometimes two nights in one place.
No symbolic rule.
Just choice.
Naruto continued doing the same with his apartment.
Sakura remained mostly at Hatake and went home twice a week for dinner.
Kakashi stopped counting who slept where.
Mostly.
He still checked the security seal at midnight.
The compound knew authorised signatures.
Four.
Five when Jiraiya stayed.
More when others visited.
Kakashi stood before the old Hatake training post one evening.
Sasuke approached.
“Can I ask something?”
Kakashi looked at him.
“Yes.”
“You said Itachi was made useful too young.”
Kakashi’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
“Does that mean you think he had no choice?”
“No.”
Immediate.
Sasuke’s shoulders lowered slightly.
Kakashi continued.
“I think choices can be constrained without disappearing.”
Sasuke looked toward the training field.
“If Danzō ordered it?”
“I still think Itachi chose something.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“Would you forgive him?”
Kakashi considered.
“No.”
Sasuke looked at him.
“Never?”
“That is not what I said.”
Kakashi touched an old knife mark in the post.
“My father made a choice the village condemned. For years, I simplified it into cowardice. Then I simplified it into heroism.”
Sasuke listened.
“Neither helped me understand him.”
Kakashi looked at Sasuke.
“If Itachi was pressured, manipulated or ordered, that changes the truth.”
“It doesn’t change what he did.”
“No.”
Sasuke’s jaw tightened.
“Good.”
Kakashi almost smiled.
Sasuke looked toward the Uchiha district beyond the trees.
“I still want to kill him.”
“I know.”
“You’re not going to tell me revenge is wrong.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because moral slogans are not plans.”
Sasuke snorted faintly.
Kakashi continued.
“I will tell you killing him before you understand what you need from him may destroy information.”
Sasuke became still.
He had reached that conclusion himself.
Hearing Kakashi state it made it more real.
“Power includes waiting,” Kakashi said.
Sasuke hated that.
“Sometimes.”
“Annoying.”
“Yes.”
They stood beside Sakumo’s training post.
Two sons carrying fathers and brothers they did not fully understand.
No clean answers.
Kakashi touched his wrist.
Sasuke looked at him.
“Why?”
“Checking.”
Sasuke almost rolled his eyes.
Then answered.
Present.
---
Naruto met Kisame properly only once during the encounter.
He remembered the sentence.
So this is the Nine-Tails.
For days afterward, Naruto became louder whenever someone called him Uzumaki.
Not consciously.
Iruka noticed.
So did Jiraiya.
No one corrected him.
Then during a sealing lesson, Jiraiya said, “Your mother would have hated that bastard.”
Naruto’s brush stopped.
“Why?”
Jiraiya froze.
Information boundary.
Naruto looked at him.
“You already told me she was from Uzushio.”
“Yes.”
“You told me she was loud.”
“Accidentally.”
Naruto glared.
Jiraiya sighed.
“She did not appreciate people reducing someone to a seal or bloodline.”
Naruto’s throat tightened.
“Because of Uzushio?”
“Partly.”
“Because of her?”
Jiraiya looked at the diagram.
Not authorised.
But some answer belonged to Naruto.
“Your mother spent much of her life being described first by what she carried and what she could do.”
Naruto’s hand moved to his stomach.
Another parallel.
“Like me.”
Jiraiya’s face softened.
“Yes.”
Naruto looked at the seal notation.
“What did she do?”
“With being angry?”
“Yeah.”
Jiraiya laughed.
“Poorly.”
Naruto stared.
“That’s not useful.”
“She shouted.”
“I do that.”
“She hit people.”
Naruto looked delighted.
Kakashi, passing the doorway, said, “Do not encourage him.”
Jiraiya continued, “She also learned to make very precise seals while angry, which is significantly harder.”
Naruto looked at his brush.
His characters deteriorated whenever frustrated.
Challenge accepted.
Jiraiya regretted the statement immediately.
Naruto practised the same line eighteen times.
The eighteenth was correct.
Not because anger became strength.
Because connection made work feel like inheritance rather than remediation.
One parent from Uzushio.
Mother.
Loud.
Seals.
People reducing her to what she carried.
Naruto did not know her name.
Yet.
He knew another piece.
Itachi’s visit had made Akatsuki real.
It had also made Naruto more determined that when people came for the Nine-Tails, they would find Naruto already occupying the same body.
Not separable.
Not secondary.
---
A week after Itachi left, Team Seven gathered at the Hatake table for their formal debrief.
Kakashi wrote the heading.
**WHAT CHANGED?**
Naruto groaned.
“Everything is paperwork.”
Sakura looked at him.
“You like the new forms.”
“I tolerate the new forms.”
Sasuke sat with his own page.
The split in Naruto’s lip had healed.
Sasuke’s apology had improved.
He had offered to repair Naruto’s damaged jacket.
Naruto said that counted.
Kakashi began.
“Operationally?”
Sakura answered.
“Akatsuki confirmed active interest in Naruto.”
Sasuke added.
“Kisame’s weapon absorbs chakra.”
Naruto said, “Itachi knows our procedures.”
Kakashi looked at him.
“How?”
“He watched.”
Sasuke’s face tightened.
Naruto continued.
“He saw the flare. Saw us report. Saw me say everyone knew about the fox.”
Kakashi nodded.
“We assume future opponents may adapt.”
Sakura wrote.
“What else?”
Silence.
Not operational now.
Personal.
Sasuke stared at his page.
“He can still control me.”
Naruto’s head lifted.
Kakashi did not answer immediately.
Sasuke continued.
“Not completely.”
Important distinction.
“But enough.”
He looked at Naruto.
“I hit you because he made me feel like waiting meant being used again.”
Naruto nodded.
No reassurance.
Sasuke looked down.
“I knew he was manipulating me.”
“And?” Kakashi asked.
“Knowing didn’t stop it.”
“No.”
Kakashi’s voice was gentle.
“That is useful evidence.”
Sasuke exhaled.
“What do I do with it?”
Sakura answered.
“Build around it.”
The phrase came from the compound.
Damaged support.
You did not curse the wall for being weak.
You added structure where load exceeded capacity.
Sasuke looked at her.
“How?”
“Don’t receive Itachi information alone.”
He bristled.
She lifted one hand.
“Not because you can’t own it.”
Boundary.
“Because you already know his delivery is part of the manipulation.”
Sasuke considered.
Naruto added, “And if you do get it alone, don’t decide anything until you tell someone.”
Sasuke frowned.
“Who?”
Naruto shrugged.
“Your choice.”
Kakashi watched.
Not Team Seven must know.
Someone.
Shikaku.
Kakashi.
Naruto.
Sakura.
Maybe one day someone else.
Sasuke wrote.
**NO MAJOR DECISION WITHIN ONE HOUR OF DIRECT ITACHI CONTACT.**
Naruto peered.
“One hour?”
“I’m starting small.”
Kakashi’s eye curved.
“Good.”
Sasuke glared.
Kakashi corrected.
“Noted.”
Sakura wrote another.
**VERIFY IMAGES SEPARATELY FROM INTERPRETATION.**
Naruto frowned.
“Normal words.”
“Seeing Danzō in genjutsu doesn’t prove Danzō ordered the massacre.”
Sasuke’s jaw tightened.
Then nodded.
Naruto wrote his own.
**SOMEONE SAYING NINE TAILS DOESNT MAKE THEM KNOW ME.**
His handwriting became large.
He did not correct it.
Kakashi looked at his page.
Then wrote:
**TEAMMATES DISCLOSING VULNERABILITIES MAY REMOVE ENEMY LEVERAGE, BUT DISCLOSURE REMAINS THEIR CHOICE.**
Sakura looked at him.
“That’s going into jounin protocol.”
“Possibly.”
Naruto pointed.
“We changed another rule.”
“Tiny pieces,” Kakashi said.
Sasuke looked at the phrase.
He had once dismissed it.
Now it irritated him differently.
A surveillance record moved.
A message reported.
A crow examined with others present.
A punch followed by stopping rather than running.
Small choices had kept him in the house.
Not trapped.
Present.
He looked at Kakashi.
“Can I add something?”
“It’s your debrief.”
Sasuke wrote slowly.
**THE VILLAGE MAY HAVE LIED. ITACHI MAY BE TELLING SOME TRUTH. THOSE ARE NOT THE SAME AS KONOHA IS MY ENEMY OR ITACHI IS HONEST.**
The first statement does not prove the second.
Gaara’s sentence.
Naruto read it.
He looked at Sasuke.
“That’s good.”
Sasuke sighed.
“You’re all impossible.”
Sakura smiled.
Kakashi’s eye softened.
Outside, the compound barrier hummed beneath the earth.
Not safety.
Structure.
Far beyond Konoha, Itachi travelled beside Kisame toward another Akatsuki meeting.
He carried intelligence.
Nine-Tails confirmed.
Jiraiya present.
Konoha alert.
Sasuke connected.
He did not include that last word in the written report.
He did not know why.
Perhaps because it was personal.
Perhaps because naming it would make Akatsuki recognise it as vulnerability.
Perhaps because some part of him had already begun protecting something he had once intended to destroy.
Inside Konoha, Danzō read the first notice that Uchiha post-massacre surveillance records were under formal audit.
His visible eye narrowed.
Elsewhere, Shikaku requested archived ANBU chain-of-command files.
Yamato identified two Root procurement signatures.
Tsunade reinforced the hospital.
Iruka added genjutsu-orientation drills to older Academy classes.
Jiraiya prepared Naruto’s next sealing lesson.
Gaara wrote from Sand:
**The first statement does not prove the second. Temari says this should be obvious. It was not.**
Naruto laughed when he read it.
Then wrote back.
At the Hatake table, Sasuke studied reports.
Sakura returned late from the hospital and placed her chunin vest on the chair.
Kakashi counted without trying.
Four.
Present.
Itachi had come home.
He had hurt Sasuke.
Badly.
He had changed what Sasuke knew.
He had exposed cracks beneath Konoha that could no longer be comfortably ignored.
He had not taken Sasuke with him.
Not because Sasuke no longer loved him.
Not because revenge had disappeared.
Not because Team Seven’s bonds were magically stronger than trauma.
Sasuke stayed because, for the first time, leaving immediately would have meant allowing Itachi to decide what the new information required.
That was not enough to make Sasuke safe.
It was enough to keep the next choice his.
For now.
Naruto touched two fingers to his wrist.
Sakura answered.
Kakashi.
Sasuke looked at them.
Then answered too.
Present.
