They'll steal the saplings, he thinks, and every cell in his body goes cold at once. But he can still grow colder. They'll steal—
"They can't find out about you."
Confusion washes over Grace's horror-struck face. "Can't find out about... What, that I'm from Earth?"
"No," he grits out. "They can't. Not about Earth. Not about you. Who you are. That you're a scientist. That you can—" That you have saved the stars. He clamps down on the words, swallowing them in sharp pieces that scrape his throat on the way down. "You can't reason with these people."
(My people, he can't say. Not anymore.)
