Summary
For the first time in his life, Soap is doing things by the book and sticking tae the regs tae the letter. He doesnae even try tae buy himself time by pretending he needs tae think it over; in less than six hours, his transfer request is sitting on Price's desk. And so the countdown begins.
When he first found out, his mind instantly was back on soft patchwork quilt on the kitchen couch, flipping through glossy brochures.
Grandma, mum, sister. Every aunt, niece, whoever is on the maternal line. That crap had taken out a good third of them; they all went through it. Hearts gave out, post‑op infections, love nae faded with distance, abnormally fast growth, inoperable cases, seeking help too late 'cause the flowers seemed harmless at first, suicide. Not that long ago his aunt - in a (un)happy marriage - didnae make it to thirty; she woke up one morning coughing petals. Near the end, she admitted she'd known about the affair but had never let herself think about it. The floral filth didnae kindly take self‑deception.
He'd always known he took after his mother. -
