Chapter 1: What was left…

Chapter Text

It was finally over, a plan for a glorious battle fifty years in the making had come to its conclusion, the major was dead, Alucard had seemingly faded from existence itself and much of London was in complete ruin. Walter stared out at the horizon as the sun rose above the clouds breathing in the fresh air, what he did was an immense risk to himself and everyone around him, but he knew it had to be done, luckily for him the doctor hadn’t put up much of a fight. He was reduced to a set of visceral ribbons strewn across the floor before he could even think to attack, before Walter could flee the scene however the zeppelin was engulfed in flames and despite his newly found youthful vitality it still wasn’t nearly enough to escape the blaze. Walter clutched the side of his neck, the pain of the third degree burns searing his battered nerves. His breathe coming in heavy heaves as he tried to remain as still as possible, he could already tell majority of the left side of his body was affected, and it left him no choice but to sit down and rest for a moment. “You really did get what you always wanted major, to bad I won’t let this happen again” he spoke to no one but himself the pain making him delirious, he sighed looking further up into the sky only to be surprised by what he witnessed.

Seras flew through the sky using her enhanced vision to scope out the remains of what was once a bustling street in London, now reduced to a desolate wasteland, she held Integra to her as they flew the other blonde woman seeming completely jaded as she remained motionless. Seras had been trying not to give in to tears the entire time. Why? Why did this happen? What did they do to Master? Seras couldn’t help but feel powerless, if only she could of done something, she soon felt a reassuring hand on her shoulder, Pip who she now recognised as her familiar floated just above her as they flew do not fret ma chère he smiled from beyond her shoulder I will stay by your side, I promise you that Seras felt a small smile grace her lips thank you she spoke her thanks telepathically.
she glanced down at the ruined city scape and was surprised to see their organisation’s butler sitting by himself against a large piece of rubble “wait, Integra that’s Walter!” She swooped down and gently placed herself and Integra onto the cold asphalt ground and Integra soon ran over to inspect the old butler’s condition. She frowned seeing the charred state of much of his clothes, she stood over him the pained grimace never leaving her features “where were you?” She asked in an almost whisper but surprisingly he still seemed to hear her “I was, cleaning up an old loose end” he tried to get to his feet but the searing pain of his burns prevented much movement.

Integra turned to Seras “can you please take him as well, he’ll need to be placed in cold water” Seras nodded and soon she picked up Walter in her arms and Integra grabbed a hold her her by the shoulders, within minutes they were once again in the relative safety of the manor and Seras quickly rushed Walter into one of the wash rooms drawing a cold bath and placing him within it. She still wondered however, why did he look so much younger here, he looks only a few years older than me now? She knelt close to the side of the tub as she inspected the burns visible through his charred clothing “Walter… what happened?” He frowned slightly his eyes still closed shut, there was a moment of uneasy silence before he finally spoke “I, I pretended to be on millenniums side in order to gain the doctors trust- he coughed profusely cutting his speech off causing Seras to jump back slightly in shock, once she regained her bearings a few moments later she returned to her previous position waiting for him to continue. “I asked the doctor to activate the telomere damage reversal mechanism he had implanted into me many years ago when I was only a child, Alucard found me before they could give me the vampire chip however” he coughed but less intense this time “I believe the doctor wanted to create a truly powerful Vampire that could mimic Alucards ability to change age or appearance” he opened his eyes slightly staring at the ceiling “of course that would never come to pass, how, fortunate for me” he closed his eyes again seemingly at the edge of sleep. Seras figured it would be a good idea to let him rest, she wanted to go check on Integra anyways so she carefully crept out of the room back towards the main foyer making a mental note to grab a first aid kit when she returned to him.

integra had flung herself onto one of the sofas that had remained mostly undamaged even after the attack, she stared up at the ceiling blankly how had everything gone to shit so quickly she pondered her hands placed tensely against her mid section, she sighed heavily feeling tears begin to well in her eyes, great, just wonderful, now I have to face this alone. She felt her blood boil as she thought back to all the major said in their final confrontation what an absolute wretched creature a man who had completely abandoned his human flesh in favour of a mechanical imitation, it disturbed her to no end the lengths ones like him would go to just for a chance at causing complete desolation. She closed her eyes trying to rest her weary mind but was soon alerted to footsteps approaching, Seras rounded the corner and locked eyes with Integra a slight frown adorning the Vampire’s face “Walter seems to be in stable condition, I placed him in a cold bath as you asked” she moved towards their leader taking a seat beside her as she sat up with elbows on her knees and hands covering her face, Seras placed a reassuring hand on Integra’s shoulder hoping to ease the pain she knew was dwelling within integra’s thoughts. The latter took a deep breathe before sitting up further and turning to Seras with a face of all sorts of mixed emotions, her usual nonchalant mask was gone, replaced with abject horror, anger, sorrow and confusion mixed all into one. “I… I don’t even know where to begin with this” Integra’s voice was strained as she spoke clearly holding back tears. Seras inched a bit closer to comfort her friend as she began. They talked for what felt like hours but was probably only half and hour at most, Integra continued to vent her frustrations and sorrows as she helped Seras patch up Walter.

Several weeks would pass as Integra, Seras and Walter worked to try and rebuild from the immense damage done in the attack, Seras knew healing would be a long road not just for her, Integra and Hellsing as a whole but pretty much the entire world, not even a week afterwards stories about the attack on London were everywhere, every major news outlet from around the world had covered the tragic event only obscuring the fact that vampires were involved. For the foreseeable future most of London would be off limits and soon a new site for the city just a little ways away was decided upon for the survivors to live.

Seras stared out at the decimated city scape from the rooftop as cranes and large trucks and vehicles worked to remove the rubble, if only master was still here, he’d know what to do,  she sighed as she took flight into the night sky, hoping… no praying that one day her master would return and this nightmare would end. Until then she had to stay strong for the benefit of everyone, even herself.
