Summary
"Nubie," his father grunted, his voice rasping like sandpaper. "The Enigma Emperor. They say he is a monster, Joshua. A boy who slaughtered his own father to claim the throne at fifteen. He has bypassed the tradition of fratricide, keeping his brothers close like hounds on a leash. And now, he demands a bride."
"He demands me" Joshua corrected, his voice calm.
"You are a warrior," his father muttered. "You are not fit for the silks of the South. But the treaty... if we refuse, Nubie will turn its golden fields into a graveyard. You know their power, Joshua. They have the Sun."Joshua looked down at his gloved hands. He remembered the boy from ten years ago. A boy with hair the color of moonlight and eyes that held the terrifying, burning heat of a furnace. He remembered pulling that boy from the wreckage of a coup, his blade wet with the blood of assassins. He remembered the way the boy had looked at him then—not with fear, but with a terrifying, consuming adoration.
"I will go,"
