Freya rose out of the water when she sensed Gwen and Merlin’s arrival. “It’s good to see you,” she greeted them. “How are things at Camelot? Are the people embracing the changes you’ve made?”
“It’s good to see you too, Freya,” Gwen smiled warmly at her, before heir expression turned more serious. “For the most part, people have welcomed the changes, but, of course, there is still pushback. After all, I was a commoner before Arthur married me, and for some of the nobles, that will always be more important than Arthur bestowing the right to rule the kingdom on me.” She twisted the ring on her finger. “And, of course, there are countless who still believe magic is evil. And they hate Merlin and their position because of it.”
“Gwen,” they began, before they were cut off.
“No, Merlin,” Gwen shook heir head, taking Merlin’s hand in heirs. “I have never once regretted our marriage. It would have been far worse for us if I had had to marry a noble who could not be trusted to care for our people as you do and I think I would be far worse off if you hadn’t come back to Camelot after…” her voice trailed off. She took a deep breath. “I’m glad it’s you, Merlin.”
Merlin smiled. “I am too. Somehow it would feel strange if it were anyone else.” They paused, before amending their statement, eyes flickering to Freya. “Anyone else that isn’t already dead.”
“How long will you be staying?” Freya asked.
“Not long,” Merlin replied with a sigh. “We just wanted to get away from Camelot for a while.”
“A few hours,” Gwen added, before they started making their way to the cabin that Merlin had conjured up by the lake.
For now, they weren’t Emrys, the Lady of the Lake, and the Ruler of Camelot, but were Merlin, Freya and Gwen, the lovers.
