Work Text:
Paige laid in her cot her black wings covering her like a blanket Looking up at the mobile hanging above her,
The door creaked her dad slowly walking in checking if she’s awake
"Morning sunshine”
He draws out the nickname speaking softly
“It's take your kid to work day! Your coming with me today,
you get to see what i do when your at daycare"
he smiled flicking his brown hair from his face
her dad walked out of the house with her in his arms locking the door behind them
he placed her gently in the car seat, strapping her in before hopping in the front seat and starting the car,
the drive to the lab was long and boring, the dads hands lent quietly on the steering wheel
about 30mins into the drive Paige fell asleep.
She awakened when her dad opened the car door, he leaned in and unbuckled her from her car seat
She huffed and looked away, protesting waking up.
"wakey Wakey we're here!, make sure to be on your best behaviour
and stay with me, don't go wandering off without me"
he picked her up and put her gently on the ground she shakes off making her wings fluffing up,
he holds her pale hand as they walk form the carpark to the lab, she accidentally steps on her wings and falls over scraping her knees
On the gravel.
“What did i say about dragging your wings! You’re gonna get yourself hurt”
He lifted her back onto her feet letting her shake it off, she had never been a
Dramatic kid.
“I’ll get you a plaster when we get inside”
"Are we going to see the smart people?"
She tills her head at her dad curiously shaking herself off.
"Yes we are going to see the smart people" he chuckles he’s always loved the little names she gives,
He holds her hand tightly as they walk.
he scans he's keycard, walking into the building going down the hall to the staff room he clocks himself
in for his shift then filled in the for and printed out a visitor pass for Paige,
sticking it on her pink butterfly top then going the the first aid kid for a plaster.
"This is so the other smart people know vou're supposed to be here and who you are!"
"Daniel!"
One of her dads work friends says
Walking over to the two of them.
"I thought you had today off! Awww and i see you brought your little one with you!"
He chuckles ruffing her hair she flares her wings in playful protest.
"Yeah though I'd show her what i do,
she calls my work friends the smart people, it's honestly adorable"
Her dad chuckled squeezing her hand while applying the plaster with the other hand.
"I know it's rude to ask don’t feel like you have to answer but has she shown any signs of powers coming in?"
The work friend asks half whispering.
"No she hasn't, and she's 3 now signs normally show by now so i don't think she's got any powers,
it was 50/50 her mum had powers but i dont"
Paige's dad said looking at her curious eyes.
"Awww that's alright though not everyone gets them, she might be a late bloomer
Although less chance for her being a villain am i right"
The work friend says as they both chuckle
"At least she has wings, but be careful today man,
the study in room 3 has been unusually active today, especially with your kid here
Keep an eye on her"
He says giving a warning look to Daniel
“I’ll take more precautions, thanks for warning me”
He crouched down to Paige, picking her up by her underarms
“Ready to see what i do for work?
“Yes!”
She nodded her head vigorously beaming with excitement
At getting to see where dad works all day

“This is where we test different samples”
He said walking into a room filled with desks and vials.
“Wowwww”
She said looking around at all the colourful vials.
“Can we go over there”
She gleamed as she pointed down the hallway
her wings wrapping around herself in excitement.
He walks down the hall holding her hand tightly as they pass a row of doors,
each with numbers and small plastic windows covered by bars, she looks at the doors
With her mud brown eyes Full of curiosity.
he gently shifts her gaze forward as he locks eyes with it while passing,
*leave her be you’ve been fed*
He thinks to himself as they keep walking down the hall a hand on her shoulder. she’s bouncing on her heels
As they continue to walk down the hall looking at all the different things.
They walk into a room with a bunch of testing machines, they hum as they work
Her hands fly to her ears she squeezed her eyes shut as if that would
Block out the noise too, her dad grabbed her hand and gently leads her out the room
And continues down the hall.
After a bit of walking they pass containment room 3, inside is a mass of pure void.
A mix of deep purple and black, white specks dance through the mass like starts in a night sky.
She stops in her tracks starting into the mass like a trance like is callling to her, her wings drop down relaxing on her back, then she realises she can FEEL it staring back at her.
Her dad grabs her off and quickly pulls her away as they keep walking his grip firm but protective on her arm.
He guided her down the hallway towards the main study room. his lab partners already inside.
It’s a large room filled with computers and research papers everywhere the 2 inside turn to look at her.
“Lucy! I thought you had the day off?”
Daniel said while picking Paige up after she tried to mess with the computer.
“Ugh i wish but the du-“
Lucy started before being interrupted by Daniel.
“Watch your mouth, i don’t need Paige copying you”
He glared at her.
“Oh hello! I didn’t notice you there” she said surprisingly, sweet for her history.
“Anyway this- i mean my boss declined my one day i actually wanted off can’t have anything nice here”
Daniel laughs before handing Paige over to Lucy.
“Awwww she’s so sweet! It’s it a bit dangerous to have her at this fuc- this lab?”
She said a little concerned.
“I got it cleared it’s no more dangerous then me or you being her there’s so many safety precautions anyway”
Daniel spoke before taking Paige back from Lucy.
“ Whatever f floats your boat man,
she doesn’t have the brain power at this age to follow safety rules or anything but I can’t stop you”
They both say they goodbyes before Daniel walks out putting Paige down, so she could walk next to him.
