Yellowrootsinbloom pianostandmaster pianostandmaster For those who couldn’t catch it live, for those who don’t want to watch the replay, and for those who don’t watch hockey but want to know what the fuck is going on, here’s a summary of the shitshow that was the Montreal Metros vs Ottawa Centaurs game. Metros were playing like all they wanted to do was fight and Centaurs weren’t rising to the bait. Then Hollzy scored a beautiful goal as Hollzy is wont to do and Roz picked him up and spun him around in one of the sweetest expressions of queer joy (and queer pride) I’ve ever seen. Which is when the Metros lost their minds Drapeau (the fucking goalie) swung at Hollzy’s back with a hockey stick. He missed but Hollzy decided Drapeau didn’t deserve to have teeth anymore and started beating the ever-loving shit out of him. Unfortunately, a Metros player called Comeau did the most egregious hookstick ever caught on camera on Roz and a full team brawl erupted. Roz, cause he’s injured from the aforementioned egregious hookstick, for once actually headed to the bench instead of diving into the thick of the fight. But Comeau and a newer absolute shitstain of a Metros player called Leyland attacked Roz from behind. They cornered him, knocked him down, Comeau may or may not have purposefully skated on Roz’s fucking face, then they pinned him to the boards and Leyland choked Roz out with his hockey stick until Roz passed out. Reports are saying it wasn’t like. Regular choking. It’s not confirmed yet but people that were close when the paramedics arrived are saying it’s a ‘crush’ injury not a ‘choke’ injury. and if that’s true it means Leyland straight up broke Roz’s windpipe and Roz wasn’t breathing the entire stretch of time he was collapsed on the ice and the medics couldn’t get to him because of the fuckass Metros in the way. Hollander was actually heading into the tunnel because he got game misconducted for treating Drapeau like a chew toy. But at some point he figured out something bad was happening to Roz. Cue #hollzyrampage There was still a full team brawl on the ice. Hollander was on one side of a violent mass of fighting Metros and Centaurs and Rozanov was on the other. And when Hollander started crossing the ice to get to Rozanov, a bunch of braindead-at-best-accessories-to-attempted-murder-at-worst Metros tried to block his way. And Hollander went right through them. Just fucking. Ploughed through the Metros like it was nothing. Saying he solo’d the majority of the Metros team isn't even an exaggeration. And when Hollzy got to Roz he Fucking. Picked Comeau and Leyland up and put them through the fucking spin cycle. Just tossing them around and slamming them to the ice and punching when appropriate. Simultaneously kept other interfering Metros back as well, mostly by using Comeau as a fucking broom to sweep them out of the way. It was insane. The medics finally get to Roz. News didn’t have a good angle– or not one they’re broadcasting –so it’s mostly audience testimony saying Rozanov was intubated on the ice. But we do know that police were called and Comeau and Leyland were arrested. And that’s what happened, more or less. Hollanov had a moment of queer joy and the Metros decided the appropriate response was fucking murdering Roz. Hollzy one-man-rampaged through them and probably put 2/3rds of the team on injury reserve. But we still don’t know Rozanov’s condition. We still don’t know if he’s going to live. He’s always ending them not starting them, and he never showed this feral Terminator energy, but every season before this one Shane Hollander was barely in fights at all. But since coming out, he’s always, always getting into fights. The whole ‘polite Canadian boy who never scraps’ was basically true until he came out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Hollander ground the Metros into paste. Marcus Leyland is Commissioner Crowell’s fucking golden boy. The ‘type of player the MLH has been missing’. The ‘man who stands for traditional values’. The ‘promising youth who embodies everything the League stands for’. Leyland supported Dallas Kent (convicted rapist), is constantly retweeting fascist posts, plays dirty on the ice, and Commissioner Crowell openly thinks he’s fucking great and is always making his support for Leyland publicly clear. People keep asking how the fuck the Metros tried to murder Rozanov on camera, in a full venue, in broad view. Well if I had to guess, it’s because everyone knows Leyland has Crowell behind him. So obviously he can do whatever he wants and get away with it. Especially if it’s against Rozanov or Hollander, who along with Scott Hunter, Crowell not-so-subtly considers ‘distractions’ and ‘not representative of the MLH’. That’s why people are blaming Crowell. If there is any good to come from this shitshow - aside from the entirety of Montreal getting pounded into sand by Hollander - it’s that the League leadership must realize by now that they’re on the wrong side. Public opinion is overwhelmingly against Leyland and Comeau’s actions. Everyone is vocally horrified, and if anyone is supporting Leyland and Comeau they’re mostly being quiet about it, because the buzz on the news and internet is so thoroughly condemning their actions. The League has to have finally realized they backed the wrong horse. But whether they do anything about it remains to be seen. And that’s why we have to stay loud, and stay angry. Crowell created and reinforced the conditions that allowed this shitshow happen. And if we don’t want it to happen again, there needs to be serious change in the League. And personally, I think that change starts with Crowell fired. What if Shane really couldn’t fight– would he have gotten the same support? kvantasdefender I get where you’re coming from, but I think the hockey element is a huge factor. Calling Shane weak was also about calling him bad at his job and unsuited for the career he’s in because aggression and strength is part of hockey. Obviously non-homophobes know that being tactical with your checks is just as acceptable a play style as constantly getting into scrums, but once Shane came out as gay all of a sudden his ‘prefer not to fight’ play style had all the homophobes baying that it was proof gay men were too weak for the sport (and the fact that Shane got more shit for it than Hunter who has a similar play style is definitely where the stereotypes about Asian men being weaker also intersected). So yeah, Gay guys (and Asian guys!) shouldn’t have to be ‘strong’ for people to respect and support them. But in this specific incident, this was also proof that Shane is and always has been a hockey player. That he is just as tough and skilled as his career demands. That his play style is a preference (like he’s always said!!!!) and not because he’s weaker than other players.Personally, I think we’re alright to keep celebrating a team of homophobes getting trounced. But you’re also right that everyone should take a moment to check themselves: we’re celebrating Shane beating up the Metros, but we’re not supporting Shane because he beat up the Metros. Marcus Leyland is a hyper-aggressive ‘traditional values’ rightwing poster boy who the Commissioner of the MLH fucking adores. He’s constantly been touted as the ‘answer’ to the rising number of gay hockey players and a ‘return to real hockey’. And he just took Roz out on the ice. If that was all that happened, the rightwing ‘traditional’ MLH audience would feel smug and assured at this ‘proof’ that real men can take care of the fake, fruity fags ‘ruining’ their sport. But Hollander ruined that narrative. Hollander killed that narrative fucking dead. Hollzy took out Drapeau, Gagnon (who’s built like a goddamn mountain), Comeau, Leyland, and half the Metros roster singlehandedly. Gay AF Shane Hollander. The #gaywrathrampage means the homophobes can’t celebrate at our expense. He shut them the fuck up one concussed Metro at a time.
