Chapter Text
Red Sonja, inspired by Robert E. Howard, has been developed in Marvel comics, mostly by the writer Roy Thomas, from 1973 to 1995. After this date, further work attempted to balance the preservation of original elements and the perceived need for a modernization and evolution of the character, in the perimeter of imposed editorial and licensing arrangements. This led to controversial results, losing or strongly altering several elements considered part of the original Sonja backstory and her core personality.
This work, generated as tentative draft novel in three volumes, provides a narrative reconstruction of Red Sonja’s early Hyborian Age period in the Marvel comics (here defined as Canon). It should be seen as an attempt to develop (and preserve) Red Sonja in its Sword-and-Sorcery context without abandoning its authentic design and constraints, and therefore differentiating from the modern official development. Core elements of Marvel’s Sonja such as her complex personality, the early life trauma, the divine interpretation of her strength, her vow and the origin of her iconic costume are all treated or re-interpreted to preserve Canon’s facts, or minimize inconsistencies in relation to the Hyborian Age world political and geographical context, the chronological timeline and known relationships with other characters (and, whenever possible, the laws of physic!).
I wrote this story as a literature experimentation, but maybe it could be of interest also to Red Sonja's fans and who has an interest in Sword and Sorcery novels. If parts of this work are reported elsewhere, or if the original characters introduced here are re-used in other fanfic stories, or if the plot is used as inspiration for further development (I will be glad of this!), please cite the original source on AO3 here!
And let me know, if you want! 😊

Disclaimer
This story features Red Sonja and elements of the Hyborian Age setting as developed in Marvel Comics publications between 1970 and 1995 (here defined as “Canon”). All rights to the character and related properties belong to their respective owners. This is a non-profit fan work created solely for personal entertainment and unofficial literary experimentation. Except where explicitly stated in this note, any resemblance to post-1995 interpretations of Red Sonja or related continuities, as well as any similarity to actual persons, locations, events, or other fictional works, is entirely coincidental and unintended.
This story was developed largely based on the chronology proposed by Fred Blosser in The Conan Saga Vol. 1 #96 (1995) and related efforts from Marvel Chronology Project (www.chronologyproject.com). The narrative follows the framework established in Red Sonja: Blood and Fire – Story Bible Version 1.4 (2026). The plot is entirely original while incorporating selected references, tributes, and adapted elements derived from the Hyborian Age material of Marvel Comics and the works of Robert E. Howard. The prose was assembled using a structural classical realism approach adapted to the tonal conventions of Hyborian Sword-and-Sorcery fiction. AI-assisted editing tools were used for prose refinement, stylistic consistency, structural alignment with the story bible, continuity verification and artwork generation.
This story explores mature Sword-and-Sorcery themes, including violence, slavery, political intrigue, unequal social structures, psychological trauma, and references to sexual assault. The opinions, beliefs, and actions expressed by fictional characters do not necessarily reflect those of the author.
The current text is a draft and a work in progress, while the plot is defined, variation of the text is possible during the revision step.
