This time it did take a few minutes, until the door opened and a man appeared in front of him. For a second, the older one stared at Javert, his eyes widening visibly as he took in the other’s appearance. “Good evening, Monsieur Valjean.” “G-good evening. What... How can I help you, monsieur? Is something the matter?” “Well...”, Javert started, furrowing his brows slightly, “I met your daughter yesterday and she–” “Did something happen at school? Please do not tell me, she is being bullied again!”, the other man, who Javert had clearly identified as Jean Valjean the second he had seen him, brushed his fingers nervously through his brown hair. “Bullied? No, Monsieur Valjean, Cosette just asked me to –” “Monsieur Javert! You are here!” Cosette’s happy voice interrupted their conversation as the girl squeezed herself past her papa to wrap her arms around Javert.
“Hello Cosette...” “Cosette, is this the...?” “The policeman I told you about. Who will eat dinner with us tonight...”, Cosette answered matter-of-factly, not noticing the nervous glance her father sent to Javert. “Do you want to impress papa?”, the girl went on, looking up at Javert, who inclined his head slightly in confusion. “Pardon?” “Your uniform!” “Oh...”, as realisation dawned on him, the younger man could feel his cheeks warming. “No! Oh, God no... I had to help some of my colleagues and did not have the time to change clothes...”, he hurried to say and seeing Valjean’s face visibly relax, he quickly added: “I am sorry if my appearance confused you.” “So that is why you are late...” “Yes, but...” “You can change here, right papa?” “Y-yes, sure. Please come inside...”
