The Shape of Devotion

Summary:

Harry goes back in time by accident. With all his memories still in place, he begins his hunt for Horcruxes several years early. Not only does he make a deal with the Dark Lord, but he also uncovers the true reason for the second wizarding war, leading to a life of strange friendships and new enemies.

Notes:

This is my second story! If you haven't already, check out my first named Courtesy Among Lords, which is my version of a 'why choose' story about some of my favorite characters.

Of course this is a work in progress with no set posting schedule. I was posting weekly but I think I'm noticing a trend of readers liking longer/more substantial chapters, so I've been experimenting with writing more and potentially posting less, or slightly behind, my weekly goal. I have a clear direction for the story as a whole, though some details and scenes are still evolving as I write. I will update tags as necessary but if I miss anything that you feel should be tagged, please let me know.

My time to actually sit and write is limited, I’m continuing to build and expand the story whenever I can.

I have several stories in progress, all of which I’m working to bring to life. If you enjoy this one, feel free to follow along or check out my other projects as they’re posted.

I’m writing this because I enjoy it—and I hope you enjoy reading it just as much.

Comments are always welcome—just maybe don’t open with “this is terrible” 😉

I do not have anyone proofreading my work besides myself, and while I try to do a thorough job, I normally do it while in the truck traveling. Please know if there's an error or a typo, it's not because I didn't try.

Chapter Text

As Harry walked through the dark, Remus, Sirius and Fred were next to him on one side, both of his parents and Tonks on the other. He sighed contentedly as he continued to turn the small stone in his hand. The light proffered by the ghosts surrounding him guided him well enough. Harry genuinely felt like he was on a nice stroll through the trees with his family, if he only ignored the feeling of betrayal and frustration at being forced into this position.

Dumbledore had always meant for this to happen, and it made Harry bitter, despite being surrounded with friends and family in the end. He had thought about dropping the stone there, in the forest so that it would be lost forever. That’s what Dumbledore wanted him to do, he was sure… But why couldn’t Harry have this one last pleasantry as he walked to his death?

Harry entered the clearing, Voldemort smiling nastily at him from across the way. Antonin Dolohov stood next to him, tall and quiet, blood smearing his robes but otherwise seemingly uninjured. Harry noted a terrified Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy to his right. Rudolphus and Rabastan Lestrange stood next to an older but still just as fit wizard with a short white beard. His eyes trailed to Yaxley and several others who stood further away in the clearing.

Gripping the stone in his hand tightly, Harry never even raised his wand. As his eyes landed back on Lord Voldemort, he saw a flash of green light. His chest tightening painfully, and then- darkness.
