When he was fourteen years old, teenage curiosity and impulsiveness won over rationality, and young Danny strolled into the portal with the hazmat suit that his parents always wore. He could just go in, check it out, then head back. Easy peasy.

Or: Danny was 14 when he died alone in the portal. Nobody figure out how and why suddenly theres a ghost astronaut fighting the other ghosts.
Danny now 20 and he decides to tell his sister and best friends about his secrets.
