Somewhere out there is Tau Ceti, just another point of light if you don’t know what you’re looking at, but he does now, or enough to pretend he does. He tries to picture it properly, not as a diagram or a graphic on a screen but as something real. A green planet, or what Ryland called green, something close enough. A stretch of sky that doesn’t look like this one. A man standing in a place that isn’t meant for him and figuring it out anyway, same as always. And beside him, something that shouldn’t make sense and somehow does, a friendship built out of math and trust and the shared understanding that the universe doesn’t care if you belong, only if you can adapt.
It’s too big to really hold onto, so his brain does what it always does and scales it down. Turns it into something closer. Two people in a room, working through a problem because that’s what’s in front of them. Same thing he’s done his whole life, just… bigger consequences.
