Work Text:
The sun cast its warm rays gently upon Hinata’s face, causing his eyes to slowly open. He leisurely sat up, rubbing his eyes to stay awake.
There’s a stinging sensation coming from his back, and Hinata winced as he started to remember what exactly caused those marks.
Kageyama, below him, writhing and squirming against the bed. His hands reached up behind Hinata’s back, clutching, grasping for any stability.
The space where they meet is warm, burning. Hinata can’t get enough of it—can’t get a enough of Kage—
“Finally up, dumbass?”
Huh, Hinata recognised that voice. It sounded a lot like…
He looked up rapidly, locking eyes with none other than Kageyama, who was leaning against the door frame, a cup resting in his hands. He was smiling softly, and Hinata was unable to do anything but stare.
“Shouyou?” Kageyama asked, the smile wiped off his face, “Are you okay?”
“Tobio…” Hinata muttered, his eyes still not leaving Kageyama’s, “was last night…real? It happened, right?”
Kageyama’s eyes narrowed, as his lips drew into a thin line, “Do you…want it to be—to be nothing?”
“No!” Hinata exclaimed, practically jumping out of his bed to get to Kageyama, “No, god, you don’t know how long I’ve wanted this.”
Hinata gently cupped the other’s cheek, his thumb grazing over Kageyama’s lips, “How long I’ve wanted you.”
Kageyama shifted, holding his cup in one hand, while his other held Hinata’s face. Slowly closing the distance between them, Kageyama whispered against Hinata’s mouth, “I think I have an idea.”
Then, Kageyama (because it had to be Kageyama, since Hinata didn’t dare move) closed the distance, gently pressing their lips together.
Distantly, Hinata remarked that this kiss wasn’t like any of their kisses last night. It wasn’t desperate, or rushed, or heated, no, this kiss was…filled with love—slow, gentle and pure love.
They slowly broke apart, panting lightly, faces only inches away, their eyes never leaving each other’s.
“Shouyou,” Kageyama started, his voice soft, “what should we do now?”
“Huh?” Hinata tilted his head, “What do you mean?”
“Like…” Kageyama’s eyes darted around, as if the words he needed were hidden somewhere in Hinata’s bedroom. “Like—do you want to tell anyone? About us? I mean, like, right now. Because I don’t—“
Kageyama sighed, taking a deep breath before he continued.
“Because I don’t think I’m ready just yet, Shouyou. I want it to just be us, without anyone’s pressure.”
“That’s fine,” Hinata shrugged, “I don’t want to push you to, like, do anything.”
Kageyama smiled, “Thank you.”
Ah, his smile is really too cute.
It made Hinata want—want so many things, actually. Hinata wanted to reach out and pinch Kageyama’s cheeks, to see how adorably the setter’s face would scrunch up. He wanted to kiss Kageyama until they ran out of breath. He wanted to never need air again, just to feel Kageyama’s lips on his forever.
Distantly, he realised that Kageyama’s waiting for a response. Hinata could feel his ears burning up, without a doubt they had turned red, “It’s—it’s really no problem! Ha…”
Clearing his throat, Hinata continued in a softer voice, “Ne, Tobio, how would you feel about..” He hesitated, before taking a deep breath and pushing forward, “About a date? Tonight, maybe, after training?”
Kageyama rubbed Hinata’s cheek, his hand still gently placed there, “I would love that.”
(1)
It’s a real bummer—the fact that—right after he and Kageyama, y’know, got together—Hinata still has training.
Now, on any other day, Hinata would be ecstatic for training. Of course, volleyball is the thing he loves the most! Why wouldn’t he want to dedicate hours and hours upon end for his craft?
No, what makes today vastly different from any other day, is not only the fact he and Kageyama are a thing now—but how sore and utterly tired Hinata is from their night together. Listen, Hinata wouldn’t give last night up for anything, but the fact is he’s in no mood to train for 5 hours.
Of course, his teammates take notice.
So, during a small break in between practice, Bokuto came up to him, concerned.
“Hey! What’s wrong, Hinata?” Bokuto asked, his eyebrows furrowed, “You’re looking really tired!”
From Bokuto’s side, Sakusa nodded his head, “You’re not jumping as high, and your legs are wobbly.”
Hinata shrugged, “I’m fine, just had a rough night.”
Atsumu walked up to Hinata, hanging his arm around the shorter’s neck, a smug smile on his face, “Did ya meet someone last night, Shouyou-kun?”
Here is where Hinata makes a fatal mistake.
This is what Hinata should’ve done: He should’ve played Atsumu’s comment as a joke, instantly replying with something witty, and the rest of the team would move on.
Instead, what Hinata does is hesitates.
Which causes everyone in the team to stare at him, as it turns out that everyone in MSBY are fucking nosy and were listening in the whole time.
Atsumu’s smile gets wiped off his face, and is replaced with a gaping mouth, “WHAT?! There’s actually someone?!”
Oh shit.
He just promised Kageyama to keep their—thing? relationship?—their whatever a secret! This morning too! How is Hinata already fucking it up? It’s been, like, three hours at most!
Hinata forces himself to come down—to, quite frankly, not fuck it up anymore than he already has.
“No!” Hinata denied, “No, there’s no one!”
“So why did you hesitate?” Sakusa questioned, his eyes narrow.
“Because—!” Hinata stuttered (which definitely makes everyone more suspicious of him), “Because the question caught me off guard! That’s all!”
Atsumu opened his mouth again, definitely about to say some smug, stupid thing, when the loud voice of their captain interrupted him.
“Alright! That’s enough everyone,” Meian exclaimed, clapping his hands in order to get their attention, “let’s focus on training. Hinata, don’t push yourself too far.”
Everyone complied, leaving Hinata to breathe a sigh of relief.
The rest of practice goes normally, and Hinata suspects that everyone’s already forgotten about his little slip-up in the morning.
That is, until he gets cornered by Meian just as he’s about to leave.
“Hinata,” his captain addressed him, his voice the epitome of calmness, “could we have a word?”
A chill ran down Hinata’s spine, locking him in place.
“Yeah! Of course, captain,” Hinata replied, trying hard to make his voice not shake.
What Meian wanted to talk about was obvious. Maybe he already knew Hinata and Kageyama were a thing, Hinata knows that there have been signs all the way back to high school (and arguably even junior high). Maybe—Meian wanted them to separate, having a rival as your lover(Hinata realises that he and Kageyama hadn’t really talked about labels at all. Maybe “lover” is too intimate—boyfriend? Significant other?) isn’t ideal, Hinata knows that.
As they walked into a more secluded area, Hinata asked, with an obvious tremor in his voice, “So, what did you want to talk about, Meian-san?”
“Hinata,” Meian started, seriously, “I want you to know that you’ll always be accepted in our team, no matter what.”
…huh?
Hinata’s unable to hide his confusion, his head tilted as he questioned, “What are you talking about? I…I know that.”
Meian smiled, “That’s good. I was worried because you didn’t want to share about your significant other with the team.”
Oh.
Oh!!
“No, no! It’s not like I don’t trust you guys,” Hinata assured, chuckling slightly, “it’s just that—my, uh, significant other asked to keep our relationship secret for a while. That’s all.”
“Ah,” Meian hummed, “alright then, thanks for telling me, Hinata. I’ll try to make sure the other guys don’t bother you about it too much.”
Hinata laughed, “Good luck with that, Meian-san. Even Sakusa-san seems interested in my situation!”
His captain shrugged in response, gathering his things, “Don’t worry, I’ll find a way. And Hinata?”
Hinata, who was half-way out of the door, stopped, all his attention to Meian.
“Congratulations.”
Hinata gets out a small, “Thank you,” before he sprints out of the door.
He has to prepare for his date, after all.
“Wait, so your captain knows about us already?” Kageyama asked, taking a small sip from his drink, his eyebrows furrowed and his mouth in a slight frown. (Hinata thinks of kissing it off his face, and immediately becomes disgusted with himself. It hasn’t even been a single day since they got together and Hinata’s already acting like this.)
“No! Not really, anyways,” Hinata answered, “he just knows I’m in a relationship. That’s all.”
“Oh,” Kageyama relaxes, “that’s fine, then.” Then, continuing, he pouted, “I can’t believe your teammates almost found out though. You should’ve been more careful!”
“I was tired from last night, okay! Plus, I’m sure you weren’t any better than me,” Hinata scoffed.
“I wasn’t,” Kageyama agreed, “but I was definitely more careful than you.”
“Yeah?” Hinata raised his eyebrow, his tone incredulous, “Was it that you're careful, or just that your teammates are way less nosy than mine are?”
Kageyama rolled his eyes, “When my nosy teammates asked why my legs were wobbly, I told them I was sore from exercise, duh.”
“There’s no way that worked.”
“Well, it did, they dropped it, and I didn’t even get a pep talk with my captain.”
They continue bickering for the rest of their date—first date, Hinata will add—until the night comes to an end.
“I had fun today, Shouyou,” Kageyama confessed, his red cheeks, while partly hidden by the dark sky, are obvious to Hinata, “let’s have another date.”
Hinata can’t wait for it.

Somehow, despite literally everything, the Karasuno first year group’s schedule somehow matched.
Well, not really, since both Hinata and Yamaguchi can’t make it, both due to their work. But—Tsukishima’s in Tokyo to visit his brother, Yachi’s here for a business trip, and Kageyama lives in the capital.
Which is nothing short of a miracle. So, of course, they (read: Yachi) take it upon themselves to meet up at some semi-fancy restaurant for dinner.
Unfortunately, Kageyama feared he might just be running late to this dinner.
Not only did he definitely forget about it, and therefore got ready late, but it seems that his effort to prepare was wasted as Kageyama is currently running as fast as he can to make it to the restaurant. He’s certain that his hair must be messed up by now, along with probably his entire outfit.
But—just as he stops for a moment for the red light—Kageyama sees a familiar tuft of blond hair, and a rather tall build.
No way—
“Tsukishima?” Kageyama asked, and downright gasped when the man in question turned and he saw Tsukishima’s annoying face.
“Ugh, why is it you?” Tsukishima scoffed, rolling his eyes. Kageyama honestly could not believe the amount of attitude one guy could fucking have!
“We were literally going to see each other anyways?” Kageyama grumbled, to which Tsukishima shrugged.
“If you really thought I’m coming to see you, I’d ask you to actually think for once.”
Anyways, that’s how both he and Tsukishima ended up twenty minutes late—arguing the entire walk there.
“No, that’s really incredible,” Yachi chuckled as Kageyama retold the story to her, “what are the chances, right?”
“Exactly my point,” Tsukishima groaned, “how in the world did we end up on the same street, at the same time?”
“It’s not too crazy, considering we were literally heading to the same place,” Kageyama commented.
“That’s some soulmate shit,” Yachi sighed—and before either Kageyama or Tsukishima could shout in protest, she continued, “I’ve been having no luck in romance recently.”
At that, Tsukishima raised a brow, “Really? Yashiro-san didn’t go too well, then?”
Yachi mournfully nodded, “Ugh, we had a messy fight before we broke it off. I thought that it might be time to finally settle down—but nope! We were terrible for each other.”
Kageyama shrugged, “Well, you don’t have to settle down. You’re only, what, twenty three, Yachi? That’s young as hell.”
“But look at Tsukishima!” Yachi pouted, pointing at the culprit, “He and Yamaguchi are, like, set for life! And here I am, weeping with every woman I meet.”
“Yachi, to be honest with you,” Tsukishima’s voice lowered, as he spoke without losing eye contact, “Yamaguchi and I’s relationship is pure luck. All of it, the fact we met, that we liked each other in that way, and how we continue to work out. Everything is pure luck given by the Gods, because if it wasn’t, I’d have fucked up this relationship way sooner.”
Tsukishima continued, this time sending a snarky smile towards Kageyama, “Plus, it’s not like that guy’s having any luck either.”
Kageyama bit back his tongue, trying hard to prevent himself from saying something to reveal him and Shouyou. But, fuck, Tsukishima’s damn condescending, mean ass grin was making it hard to do so.
Unfortunately, no response seemed to be the worst response.
Immediately, Tsukishima looked at him with confusion.
“Why are you not fighting back?” He questioned, “What, is there really someone?”
Kageyama turned his head away, in hopes that it wouldn’t be able to reveal anything, as he replied, “Pft, as—as if! I could never be as gross as you and Yamaguchi.”
What a lie, Kageyama thought. Because he and Hinata were so, so much worse. Ugh, even Kageyama had to admit that they’re disgusting; Though that doesn’t mean he wants to stop kissing basically 24/7. He understands Tsukishima and Yamaguchi now and fuck isn’t that just so embarrassing! Kageyama’s been making fun of them for years!
Beside him, Yachi gasped, “Oh my god! You have a boyfriend! Who is it? Do we know him?”
Kageyama frowns. Because—
boyfriend?
Are he and Hinata boyfriends? They never really discussed any labels, just went with the flow.
Boyfriend.
The word sounds nice to Kageyama’s ears, even nicer when he pictures it with Hinata.
Does Hinata want to be boyfriends?
Kageyama snaps out of his stupor when a grating voice replaces the sweet encore of “boyfriend” in his ears.
Tsukishima nodded towards Yachi, stone-faced except for his snarky smile, “I need to convince that guy he’s making the worst decision of his life.”
“There’s no one, alright?!” Kageyama sulked, “I’m really too busy for a relationship, anyway.”
At that, Yachi and Tsukishima both shared a look with each other, before sighing in sync.
“So,” Yachi began, “there is someone, but you guys aren’t…a thing, yet.”
“Well—“ Kageyama stuttered, he could feel the blood rushing to his cheeks, his face suddenly warm, “We’ve confessed and stuff, I’m just realising that we kinda…didn’t put a label on it.”
“Who is it?” Tsukishima butted in, eyebrows raised.
“Jeez, why the hell are you so nosy?” Kageyama scowled, “None of your business, jackass. Plus, we’ve decided to keep it a secret for now.”
“Does Shouyou know who it is?” Yachi asked, but she looked unimpressed—like she already knew the answer and didn’t like it.
Does he know, Kageyama thought, well, I’d fucking hope he knows who it is!
“Well—well…” Kageyama stuttered, and the other two immediately groaned.
“How the hell is it a secret when he knows it?” Tsukishima’s eyes were narrowed.
“Yeah!” Yachi exclaimed, “Why can he know when we can’t?”
“Look—he was involved in,” Kageyama takes a deep breath, trying to collect his thoughts, “in the confessing process, okay? So of course he knows.”
Which—Kageyama isn’t really lying. Hinata was involved in the process, he was the one who confessed, after all.
Luckily, the topic was dropped after that. Instead, they move on to Yachi’s terrible cilents and some annoying homophobic fuck Tsukishima met.
When Kageyama finally gets home after their dinner, he drops to the floor immediately. Then, he takes out his phone and dials on near auto-pilot.
Thankfully, the phone gets picked up, and Kageyama breathes a little relieved sigh when he hears the other’s voice.
“Tobio? What’s up?” Hinata asked, sweetly, kindly, concern bleeding through his voice.
“Shouyou…” Kageyama whined, “ahhhh!! I messed up!”
“Huh?” Hinata muttered, very intelligently, “You mean at the dinner with Tsuki and Yachi? Messed up how?”
“I almost told them we were dating!” Kageyama complained, “They were on my ass the whole time as soon as I vaguely hinted I was in a relationship.”
Hinata was laughing on the other side—smiling so widely when Kageyama was so horrified, in pain, and most of all—embarrassed. He was the one who wanted to keep their relationship secret—and he can’t even do that!
“Honesty, what did you expect?” Hinata questioned, still lightly chuckling, “They’ve known you for so long, of course they’d know when you’re being weird.”
“And—as always—it was stupid Tsukishima’s fault. Why the fuck is he always so annoying and correct?” Kageyama grumbled, leaning forward and pressing his phone closer to his ear—just to hear Hinata’s reply better.
“Well,” Hinata started, his voice, while soft, was more serious, “I’m sure we could tell them. I mean, they’re probably going to find out soon anyways.”
Kageyama frowned at that.
Because—well, was it really necessary? Yeah, sure, maybe it’d be more convenient for him and Hinata to just straight up tell Yachi, Tsukishima and Yamaguchi that they were dating; But on the other hand, Kageyama liked what he and Hinata had.
Their soft touches, whispered reassurances, and glances to each other—a quiet, but reliable love.
And Kageyama didn’t want anyone to disturb that.
Didn’t want anyone to start questioning anything about their relationship, didn’t want anyone to make any sort of comments—good or bad—about their relationship. Didn’t want anyone to intrude into a space Kageyama wanted just for him and Hinata.
“Tobio?” Hinata’s attentive voice spoke up, “Hey, it was just a suggestion. No need to do anything.”
Kageyama sighed, “No, I just…to be honest, I don’t want you to feel…like—I’m not proud of loving you, or something. Because I am. It’s just—“ Kageyama took a deep breath, “it’s just I want this to be…only ours. Y’know? But, if you really want to tell them, we can.”
Even though they were only on voice call, Kageyama could practically hear the shrug Hinata gave, “I know you love me, Tobio, and it really doesn’t bother me that you don’t want to tell anyone. I swear.”
Kageyama hummed, “Okay. Thanks, Shouyou.”
Truthfully, Kageyama really intended to end the call there.
If they only hung up nearly four hours later, definitely disrupting both their sleep schedules, well, it’s not like anyone had to know.
(3)
Kageyama’s half-asleep, his head over Hinata’s, arms wrapped around tightly. Lately, Hinata’s been staying over at the other’s apartment a lot. So much so that Kageyama jokes that Hinata should start paying rent! Ridiculous, especially when Hinata’s still paying his own landlord!
(Distantly, though, Hinata preens at the thought of paying the rent with Kageyama–like doing that would further cement their relationship. Which, he acknowledges, is gross as hell. Who in their right mind would romanticise paying rent?)
Kageyama’s room glows with the harsh light from Hinata’s phone, as he scrolls mindlessly.
It’s something Hinata recognised he needed to fix: there’s no way it’s healthy to spend 2 hours each night just doomscrolling. Even Atsumu called him out for it! And he is definitely more chronically online than Hinata, hello?!
Hinata’s just about to put down his phone and cuddle Kageyama properly, when his hand slips and the next video plays.
It’s a short edit, with Paramore’s “Only Exception” playing in the background. It’s pretty well edited, Hinata will admit, its creator must’ve spent some time making it.
The only problem?
It’s a ship edit.
Between Atsumu and Kageyama.
Fucking Atsumu?!
“Babe,” Hinata not-so-gently taps Kageyama, trying to wake him up, “babe, have you seen this shit?”
Groggily, Kageyama blinks his eyes open, shifting around a bit.
“What is it, Shouyou?”
“Look!” Hinata shaked Kageyama this time, forcing the other to face the small device.
As the edit played again, Kageyama raised an eyebrow at Hinata.
“So…it’s a ship edit?” He asked, “What’s the issue?”
“It’s you!” Hinata exclaimed as loudly as he could in the middle of the night without disturbing anyone, “And Atsumu!”
Kageyama yawned, before burrowing his head back into Hinata, “Shouyou, those have been there for a really long time. Hell, you have your own with your teammates.”
“I know but…” Hinata sighed, “I don’t know, maybe it’s because we’re actually together now that I feel different about the ship edit stuff?”
Kageyama hummed, lifting his head to bump foreheads with Hinata, “Shouyou, don’t let it bother you. You know I love you.”
Hesitantly, Shouyou puts his phone down at the bedside table, “I know. I love you too.”
Kageyama smiled, “So—don’t worry about it. Especially if it’s with Atsumu. I’d pick just about anyone over that jerk.”
Hinata chuckled, before collapsing into bed with Kageyama, “Watch your mouth, that’s still my teammate.”
Hopefully he’d be able to get over it. It’s just like Kageyama said—he's in a relationship with Hinata, no one else.
It turns out to be very hard to convince Hinata’s stupid mind that Kageyama only has eyes for him, for fucks sake!
Yes, Hinata knows that Kageyama loves him (and Hinata loves Kageyama back) and it’s only him—it’s just his heart that can’t accept that!
Hinata keeps on going through it in his brain, but, like most things that have to do with gut-feelings and other emotional issues, his rationality is failing him.
Why, Hinata lamented, as he scrolls through the “#AtsuKage” tag on TikTok, why dumb heart.
“YA! Shouyou-kun!”
Speaking of the devil, Hinata thought miserly as none other than Miya Atsumu entered the room.
“Hurry yer ass up! We have an interview, remember?”
This interview in particular was one that Hinata was looking forward to, if only because the concept was interesting. Essentially, they would get asked difficult questions by the interviewer, and if they chose not to answer, they’d have to eat something disgusting. And Hinata’s seen some of these interviews before(read: Kageyama’s), they do NOT play about the gross shit.
“Yeah, yeah, coming!” Hinata yelled back, shoving his phone into his bag and rushing out.
“Welcome back to Leak Your Intestines, I’m your host Cames Jordon! Today, I’m here with MSBY’s Hinata Shouyou and Miya Atsumu,” the host excitedly introduced, “without further ado, let’s introduce the first food!”
Hinata and Atsumu are seated at a round table, with the food settled in front of them. The host is in the middle of them, acting as nothing more than the announcer.
“Then, let’s start! Hinata-san, how about you pick the first food?” The host suggested, and Hinata grinned in return.
“With pleasure!” Hinata spun the round table, looking cautiously at all his options, “How about—the goat testicles?”
“Jeez, Shouyou-kun, so intense!” Atsumu laughed, “It’s just the first round!”
“All the foods are intense,” Hinata shrugged, “honestly, I thought this was the best option!”
“Whatever, Shouyou-kun,” Atsumu pretended to wipe a tear away, “I see what ya really think of me now.”
Chuckling, Hinata grabbed one of the notecards placed beside him, reading the question for Atsumu aloud: “Atsumu-san, would you say your brother makes the best onigiri? And if he doesn’t, who does?”
“Wow,” Atsumu scoffed, “tryin’ to separate the family, huh? Anyways—I can confidently say ‘Samu doesn’t. It’s definitely Mom!”
At his answer, the crowd let out “awww”s, even Hinata couldn’t help but coo.
“Quit it!” Atsumu yelled, his cheeks a bright red, and with it the crowd began laughing.
“Alright then,” Atsumu began, “let’s pick a food for ya, Shouyou-kun.” He spun the table around, before finally settling on squid sperm.
“Atsumu-san!” Hinata gasped, “Out of all of them, you just had to pick the sperm.”
Atsumu didn’t reply, just started giggling as he reached to get a notecard.
“So, Shouyou-kun,” Atsumu started, his voice going lower in a serious tone, “are ya ready for yer question?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
Atsumu grinned as he read out his question, “If you were to “ship” anyone in the VLeague, who would be the couple and why?”
Now—Hinata will take ownership of the mistake that occurred right after this. He hadn’t really been thinking when he heard the question, or well—he had been thinking. Been thinking of the “AtsuKage” ship edits and theories. The countless ones he’d regretfully been doomscrolling to.
Without missing a beat, Hinata answered, “Me and Kageyama.”
The crowd started laughing, but what really breaks Hinata out of his stupor is Atsumu’s face. He watches as the setter’s face morphs into that of pure shock.
His eyebrows are raised, eyes widened, and even his mouth is slightly gaped.
Fuck.
Hinata’s got to save this before Atsumu starts suspecting anything.
“I mean—think about it,” Hinata tries to smile, but he’s almost sure it comes out tight and awkward, “Kageyama and I would have the greatest love story ever! Enemies, turned friends, but still enemies on the court nonetheless? We’d fit all the tropes!”
“Yeah, sure, Shouyou-kun,” Atsumu plays along, rolling his eyes.
The rest of the interview goes smoothly, with Hinata having to unfortunately drink a “mystery animal brain smoothie.” At least it wasn’t squid sperm, he guessed.
(When Hinata comes home, Kageyama scolds him for acting so recklessly. Hinata would feel more guilty about it if the argument didn’t end in an incredible makeout session.
And, if Hinata struggles to walk the next day, no one but them need to know.)

Kageyama can feel how hard his feet are reaching the ground, practically stomping, and he stubbornly wishes that the surface could shake because of it.
He can feel how tightly clenched his fist is, wrapped around his bag strap. He can feel the haziness of his thoughts, can feel his body moving around without thinking.
Most of all, he can feel his teammates’ confused stares as he enters the Alders gym.
But, like the not nosy people they are, no one says anything.
No, they just continue to play when Kageyama’s serve goes out. Or when he misses an easy bump. Or when his set is just a bit too high to be comfortable for anyone.
And maybe that’s the worst thing about it.
Everyone’s being so nice(nicer than usual, too), when Kageyama’s been so bitchy since morning.
It makes his eyes itch, something (that Kageyama does NOT want to name) threatening to sprout out. Makes him want to look up to stop it.
After Kageyama’s fourth missed serve in a row (which makes the other practice team win the set), there is a break.
Kageyama genuinely wants to evaporate and maybe leave the Schweiden Alders. Or—maybe, Coach will just force him to leave. Wouldn’t that be something?
“Hey, Kageyama!” Hoshiumi yells, “What’s up with you?”
Oh god, Kageama thinks, I'm not ready.
“Yeah, what’s going on?” Romero-san adds, “You’ve been off today. Something happened?”
Then, the rest of the team comes along voicing their concerns, asking what happened.
Even Ushijima.
“—Thus, I believe it would be beneficial for you to confide in what is bothering you, Kageyama,” Ushijima finishes after a long anecdote about a time he concealed his feelings.
Kageyama wants to cry.
“Holy shi—Kageyama, don’t cry!”
Ah, fuck. He’s already sobbing.
“I’m—“ He hiccups, as Hirugami-san shoves a box of tissues into his hands, “I’m sorry, everyone. My—my bad mood’s affected the whole group.”
“Kageyama, it’s okay to have an off day,” Hirugami-san comments gently, “how about you tell us what happened? Maybe it’ll make you feel better.”
Trying to calm down, Kageyama sniffles, “It’s-it’s just, this is our first fight since we got together! And—and it was, like, really bad. Like, worse than when we were just stupid kids and, I don’t know, I feel like we might brea—break up, or something.”
“And!” Kageyama continues, “It was so fucking stupid, I don’t know why I was so affected by it, like, he’s allowed to take his time—God knows I am, in this.”
Silence fills the room.
Well, not really.
Kageyama’s still crying.
“S-sorry, guys,” Kageyama choked out, “I probably should’ve just stayed at home today.”
“Wait—so it sounds like you just had a bad argument?” Romero-san asked, “You should just call and apologise right now!”
Kageyama pouted, dapping a tissue to his eyes, “No, I can’t, he’s at work right now.”
“HE?!” Hoshiumi-san interrupted, to which Hirugami-san slapped him.
“Anyways, it’s still bothering you a lot, so maybe just send a voicemail or text?” Hirugami-san suggested.
Hoshiumi-san snorted at that, “The fuck? Just grow some balls and call the guy.”
“I agree with Hoshiumi,” Ushijima butted in, “you should grow some balls, Kageyama.”
Which is how Kageyama ends up calling his boyfriend in the middle of practice, every single person in Schweiden Alders huddled around him.
“See,” Kageyama sighs as Hinata doesn’t pick up the call, “I told you guys he’s at—“
Ring!!!
The whole team lets out “ooo”s as Hinata calls him back.
Kageyama picks it up.
“Tobio?”
And just like that, all the tension in Kageyam’s body evaporates.
His voice is still a bit teary when he starts, “I’m so sorry. For everything. You have the right to take your time in telling your parents. Really, I didn’t mean to be so—so, like, dramatic? About it. Like, go at your own pace, y’know.”
Kageyama takes a gulp before continuing, “I’m—sorry. Yeah. I’m sorry.”
Hinata’s quiet, on the other side. Doesn’t say a word. When Kageyama finished talking, he could feel the stares of his teammates, waiting for any change in mirco-expression.
Then, finally, he replies—choked up and slightly stuttering—“Idiot, have you been crying?”
Kageyama laughs, and the racing thoughts slow down. His teammates visibly smile, as well.
“Hey, I’m sorry too,” Hinata continues, “I mean, I didn’t have to lash out at you like that. Pretty, um, dumb of me. To escalate the conversation. Plus, I didn’t know you were comfortable with our parents knowing—that’s why I didn’t tell them.”
Hinata takes a deep breath, before he adds on, “Actually, I’d love to tell them. To be honest, Tobio, I’ve wanted to tell everyone. I think—I think I just got mad because you were always the one insistent on being a secret, so wanting us to be out felt like…a total 180, y’know.”
Kageyama hums, “Yeah. I know. I realised that it seemed like that, in hindsight.”
“So?” Hinata questions, “Could we—like, tell people? Not the media. Just our friends, like Tsuki, Yama, Yachi, y’know.”
“Sure,” Kageyama surprises himself, agreeing so easily—but maybe he’s been waiting for this too. Maybe he’s tired of hiding, too. “Let’s do that.”
“Great. Bye? See you at home! Love you!”
“Mn, okay. Bye, love you.”
When Kageyama ends the call, all of Schweiden Alders is staring at him intently.
“Soooo… how’d it go?” Hoshiumi-san asks, wiggling his eyebrows, “And do we get to know the name of the lucky guy?”
Kageyama scoffs, “It went well, and no.”
(Even though they just agreed to not be secret anymore, it was only for their super close friends. And Kageyama also needed to mentally prepare, first. He couldn’t do it now, not without Hinata.)
Ushijima-san, as cryptic as ever, remarked, “But is it that much of a mystery?”
Immediately, everyone pounced on him for answers—but Kageyama gave what he hoped were his best dog-eyes and Ushijima kept his mouth shut.
Kageyama didn’t doubt that Ushijima already knew who it was, anyways. He’s freaky like that.
(+1)
They forget to tell anyone.
At first, they would talk about setting up dinners with friends, to reveal the big news—but they never followed through with it. Hinata hates to say it, but they were much too lazy.
Too much of a hassle.
Now, they’ve just agreed to reveal their relationship whenever it’s convenient too. Which it hasn’t been, for about seven months.
Today is their first year anniversary. Kinda. Depending on what you count as “the start of their relationship,” it would either be today, or yesterday.
Hinata very much acknowledges that they didn’t do the whole confession thing in a very conventional manner. Makes it hard for shit like anniversaries.
“Shouyou? Hello??” Kageyama waves a hand over Hinata’s face, “Could you not zone out on our date?”
“Thinking about you, babe,” Hinata winks, and Kageyama rolls his eyes.
“Obviously. Who else?”
“Anyways—“ Hinata changes the topic, gesturing to the empty plates on their table, “the date’s basically over already. We’re finished, no?”
Kageyama pouts at that, “Date’s not over until you take me home, Shouyou.”
Hinata chuckles, as he starts to get up, “Of course, how could I forget. Oh, let me pay for this one, Tobio.”
Kageyama sighs, “Fine, but I’ll pay for the next anniversary.”
At the mention of another year with Kageyama, Hinata can’t help but smile, “Looking forward to it, babe.”
They walk home, holding hands. It’s late at night, so there’s barely anyone to judge them.
Hinata never wants to let go.
It seemed like Kageyama didn’t either, with how he dragged them both into a random alleyway (straying from the path home) and kissed him silly.
Click.
Kageyama pulled back, “Did you hear something?”
Hinata shrugged, “Not really. Can you kiss me again?”
Kageyama flicked his forehead for that, “Stupid. Do you really need to ask?”
It takes them an extra forty minutes to reach home.
The sun cast its warm rays gently upon Hinata’s face, causing his eyes to slowly open. It’s reminiscent of the very same day, exactly a year ago.
Except, this time, Hinata can hear his phone blow up like crazy.
Kageyama, somehow, is still asleep (last night must’ve tired him out, Hinata thinks with a snicker).
Still blinking himself awake, Hinata reaches for his phone, where the first thing he sees is roughly 29 missed calls from Tsukishima.
Because Hinata is a responsible adult, he calls Tsukishima back.
“Hey, Tsuki, what’s up—“
“ARE YOU DATING KAGEYAMA.”
Hinata blinks. Then blinks some more because what?
“Huh?”
“Oh god, if you guys are actually married I will kill the both of you.”
“Okay, okay,” Hinata tries to steady himself, fully sitting up, “yes, no and how did you find out?”
“Wow,” Tsukishima replies, with that sarcastic tone that he must’ve been born with, “and you never fucking told me? I told you guys as soon as I confessed to Yamaguchi!”
“Shouyou,” Kageyama groaned, “can’t you be more quiet?”
“Oh my god,” Tsukishima gasps, “is that Kageyama? Is he in your bed? Oh my god, you guys totally hooked up last night. Wow, wow, wow.”
“Tsuki?” Kageyama sits up now, too, “The fuck?”
“Hi to you too, Kageyama,” Tsukishima answered, “now tell me how long you’ve been dating.”
“What?” Kageyama blurted out, then, turning to Hinata, “How does he know? Did you tell him without me?”
Hinata shrugged, “I have no fucking clue!”
“Wait, you guys haven’t seen the news article?”
Kageyama groaned, “You cannot be serious. I told you I heard a noise!”
“Whatever—this is good!” Hinata exclaimed.
“How on Earth is it good that I heard that my best friends are dating from a fuckass news article?” Tsukishima snapped.
“Awww, we’re your best friends!” Hinata cooed, “Thanks, Tsuki.”
“Okay, but how is this good?” Kageyama reiterated, “Didn’t we want to come out to our, like, friends first? This is the whole world now!”
Hinata rolled his eyes, “We’re not that famous. Anyways, now we don’t have to come out multiple times! Think on the bright side, babe.”
“Jesus, you guys have pet names?” Tsukishima questioned, “Please never say them in front of me.”
“As if we all don’t hear Yamaguchi calling you Princess,” Hinata rebutted.
“Shut the fuck up.”
