Ahead of him was the avatar of the pit itself. Massive, indomitable. Behind him, nothing and no one besides the Doors he had to protect. “Tartarus,” he forced himself to say, voice shaking, one hand still holding the button, the other holding Riptide. The truth was, a slight nudge could have sent it to the ground. But he held it nonetheless. Under his breath, he continued his count, trying to keep track of how much longer he needed to hold out. “Three-hundred ninety-seven,” he muttered, going by his best approximation. “Three-hundred ninety-eight.”
In which Percy comes up with a new plan to get through the Doors of Death, one which leads to a very different confrontation with Tartarus himself.
