Leonard had meant to ask for new shoes—his current ones had holes in the soles and let in the rain—but when he opened his mouth what came out instead was: "I wish I could have my parents back."
The words hung in the air between them. Leonard felt his eyes burn again, felt his throat close up. "I want—I want them to come back. I want my family back. I want—" His voice broke. "I want to go home. I just want to go home."
Merlin went very, very still. The playful magician persona had cracked like a broken mirror, and underneath Leonard could see something raw and grieving and understanding. The man's hands clenched into fists at his sides.
"How long?" Merlin asked quietly.
"Eleven months," Leonard whispered. "And thirteen days."
"How?"
Leonard didn't want to answer. Didn't want to relive it.
But something about Merlin's expression made the words spill out anyway. "They—they hanged themselves. Both of them. I found them when I came home from school. I tried—I tried to get them down but I was too short and—" He was crying again, couldn't stop it. "And then the authorities came and they said I couldn't stay at home anymore and they brought me here and—and I don't understand. I don't understand why they left me. Was I—was I not good enough? Did they not want me anymore? Was it my fault? Did I do something wrong? I must have done something wrong because why else would they—"
