Chapter Text
“Oh no you don’t, Chance. This soul is mine and I got it fair and square.” A skeleton stood protectively in front of a glowing form as a young lady approached them. The scythe in xir’s hands glowed menacingly causing her to stop a short ways away and hold up her hands in a placating motion.
“Now, now...I already had a dice roll with Fate over this. I suppose you’d also like to test this one’s luck as well?” Chance smiled as a six sided dice appeared in her hand and she tossed it to xir. A bony hand snatched it out of the air and the skeleton held it up close to inspect it. Five of the sides were marked with crossbones while the sixth had a halo.
“You know the drill, Death. Halo side up, he’s mine. Crossbones and he’s all yours darling,” Death eyed the die in xir’s hand before glancing at Chance again.
“I trust this hasn’t been rigged in some way again? Or that you’re lying about Fate?” Xe asked, giving the impression that xe was scowling at her from tone alone. Which was truly impressive for a skeleton.
Chance sighed and shook her head. “So distrustful...when have I ever lied to you dearest? And why would I rig my own dice? They don’t always fall the way I want them to, you know. Luck controls that part of things and well. That one is fickle even when it comes to me.”
Death gave her a look that conveyed exactly how much xe believed that. With a sigh xe shook the dice in xir hand before letting it fall to the ground between them. They both leaned down to look at them and Death groaned before scowling at Chance.
“Fine, fine take him then. But if he dies again then he is mine for real next time,” Xe snapped before turning on xir heel and quietly stalking away while grumping to xirself.
Chance cheerfully scooped up the dice before turning to the soul in front of her. He had been watching the whole thing silently and she sensed his confused wariness towards the situation he was in. “Well now that that’s done...let’s get to business shall we?”
She clapped her hands and a table with two comfortable chairs appeared. “Come on and sit. We are going to be a few minutes and we may as well be comfortable while discussing things.” she settled herself onto a chair and a new pair of dice appeared across from her as the soul slowly took his place at the table.
“Now then first things first: I am terribly sorry to inform you about this but you are dead right now. You have been granted something special thanks to me though! A second try at a new life with your memories and self intact! How fortunate for you don’t you think?” she smiled as she clapped her hands again.
“I’m feeling so generous today I think I’ll throw in an extra bonus for you as well! If you choose to take this offer then you will also gain an ability to help you through life! Well...possibly...you see there is a stipulation on this deal. The universe and ability are decided by a dice roll. No pesky decision making here. Nooo sir. It’s all completely up to the dice and whatever comes up is final!”
“So what will it be? Roll the dice and see what happens or go the boring way?” She leaned forward in her seat practically almost bouncing with anticipation. This was pretty much her favorite part of things and why she loved putting these sorts of offers in front of humans. There were so many possibilities and at moments like this she could see them all.
The soul stared down at the dice before looking up at her. “This might be asking too much but...if I accept this deal could I trade my gender for one thing? I would like to have a higher probability to be reborn in a world where I would have a partner by my side. Whether it be animal, human, or otherwise...I...just would rather not be alone.”
“Hmm...well that would be up to Luck really since I don’t control how the dice fall. If they are willing to make that deal with you then it will most likely happen. Either way you won’t remember if it failed or succeeded...well. Unless Luck allows for you to know via other means. Up to them really and they are fickle at the best of times.” Chance shrugged before snapping her fingers to send a message to her fellow God.
A second later and she smiled as she got her response. “Blow on the dice before you roll and the deal will be considered complete. Once more I ask; will you accept this offer or go on to be at Death’s side? The terms are laid out and the choice is yours.” she said as solemnly as she could while trying to contain her excitement.
The soul had a very thoughtful air about it as it examined the dice in front of it before slowly picking them up. They felt familiar and not. Like it had held these exact dice before but at a different point in time.
“I’ve used these dice before haven’t I?” it asked as it glanced up at Chance.
