Unfinished Lyrics

Summary:

Sometimes the smallest moments — a conversation after school, a shared meal, an unexpected friendship — can change a life.

Zoey is used to keeping her expectations low — learning early that expecting too much usually leads to disappointment, and that keeping her head down and asking for very little is often safer.

For Zoey, “normal” has never really meant the same thing as it does for everyone else. Simple things — after-school food runs, easy conversations, and people who genuinely want you around — are still new territory.

So when Amy — the new girl at school — slowly begins introducing Zoey to things most people would consider ordinary, those small moments begin to mean more than Zoey ever expected.

Between quiet conversations, unexpected kindness, and moments that feel oddly familiar, Zoey finds herself pulled closer to a life she never thought she could be part of.

Some connections don’t make sense at first.

But sometimes the people who feel the most familiar are the ones you were meant to find all along.

Chapter Text

Burbank High School

Location: Burbank, California, USA

Zoey sat by the steps with her headphones over her ears, a notebook on her lap. Music blasting in her ears as her pencil danced across the page - unfinished lyrics, doodles, her thoughts, her fears scrawled haphazardly across its pages.

“Oh God, she’s at it again.”

Zoey paused, the pencil stilling when she heard the familiar voice. Her breath hitched momentarily as she looked up to see Rachel snickering above her. Zoey sighed, drawing her headphones around her neck.

“What do you want, Rachel?” Zoey groaned.

Zoey never understood why her classmate from General Music felt the need to torment her - all the time. She’d never done anything to her - in fact, she actively tried to avoid her.

But… that never seemed to deter her.

“Eh, nothing…” Rachel shrugged, swiping the other girl’s notebook into her hand. “Just curious to see what’s going on in these lyrics today.”

“H-Hey!” Zoey sputtered, standing as she tried - and failed - to snatch the notebook back.

“Geez,” Rachel laughed as she read the lyrics. “What is your obsession with demons?” The girl smirked and continued to laugh. “You’ve been watching way too many horror movies.”

Zoey’s hands balled into fists.

“Give it back,” Zoey gritted out, her cheeks burning with embarrassment as she fought back tears of humiliation.

She couldn’t wait to graduate.
