through the path of thorns

Summary:

Should we be fated to part, should we be fated to lose one another,

I pray we may be reunited in the end each and every time.

Lower, nulut.

"In the beginning was tale. An unfinished tale, of hope and regret, time lost and anger misplaced. Of a scared, tired bunny, and the lake it called home. Of a beautiful princess with a well-hidden secret, and the knight who had slain a thousand and one dragons for her sake. Of magic most foul, and a witch filled with hatred."

Swan Lake AU.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

hiiiii!!! this story is a fairy tale AU set in the real world. as mentioned in the tags, it’s inspired by princess tutu (anime I rly rly rly recommend!) in the sense that here too we have an "unfinished tale" and a blend between the fictional and the real, as well as a focus on ballet. overall, this fic is a blend of many different inspirations tbh... I was mainly inspired by swan lake (the original ballet), but also by the swan princess (1994 animated movie lol), princess tutu (as previously mentioned), and even some elements from arthurian legends. I was also inspired by all the knight!ena/princess!mizuki yuri musings on tumblr (mainly by @the-overanalyst, who also kindly offered to beta!!). so yeah, this is a bit of a pastiche lol

this first chapter is just a very short prologue, and the next barely features our girls, so I’ll be posting chapter one tomorrow at this time, and chapter 2 the day after. overall I think this fic will be around 10-15 chapters, if all goes according to plan lol

all good, all clear?? well then, here's the short prologue! 🦢🩰

P.S.: sorry this is not the vampire AU a lot of you have been waiting for... that's still in my drafts... I hope you all have it in your hearts to forgive me and to enjoy this AU anyway 🥺

Chapter Text

May those who accept their fate be granted happiness.

May those who defy their fate be granted glory.

In the beginning was tale. An unfinished tale, of hope and regret, time lost and anger misplaced. Of a scared, tired bunny, and the lake it called home. Of a beautiful princess with a well-hidden secret, and the knight who had slain a thousand and one dragons for her sake. Of magic most foul, and a witch filled with hatred.

This is the story of how this despicable witch, enraged at being trapped in an unfinished tale, escaped from the book she inhabited and took home in a pendant and a little boy’s nightmares.

This is the story of a swan, a lake, a bunny, a witch, a thespian, a dreamer, and a painter turned knight, and how she exchanged her paintbrush for a sword, spurred by her desperation and devotion.

This is a story about love in all its forms. Love as the caring friendship between two mothers and their infinite adoration for their children. Love as the cold control of another mother for her daughter, mistaken for warm affection by both. Love as the unbreakable bond between four girls, and the twisted obsession of a wicked witch. Love as the passion of a thespian for his companion, the yearning of a bunny for a lonely lake, and the quiet ache for the lake to be needed. But above all, this is a story of the desperate, unfathomable love between a princess and her knight, a love so powerful and so pure it can unravel the very fabric of reality and defy fate itself.

Ultimately, this is the story of how the brave knight ended the witch’s tale once and for all.
