Chapter 2: Recharge

Chapter Text

Hitting the garage door button on their remote as they turned into their long driveway, Nib was so glad they'd managed to move further from the city. Watching houses grow farther and farther apart, fields of long-harvested crops between them brought them some comfort they couldn't put a name on that they never got in the city.

But that comfort barely touched the weight on their shoulders tonight as they pulled up their driveway, passing Eddie's truck as they pulled up to the garage, parking alongside Volt's sedan. They shut off their car, sighing softly as they slump into their seat, the chill already seeping into the warm cabin. A glance in the rearview showed all the gifts they'd brought home, and they barely flinched at the thought of bringing them all inside, so worn out from their trip they didn't have the energy to care about the gifts.

A quick tally in their head to make sure nothing would be hurt by staying in the cold overnight and the thought of seeing their spouses for the first time in over a week gave them the motivation to finally get out of the car and go inside. They walked into the garage, slapping the garage close button as they walked into the house, hearing the mechanism kick in, closing the massive door. Slipping off their shoes, they padded through the ground floor, quietly walking to the couch, knowing that both their partners would still be sleeping at this early hour. A glance at the clock as they flop onto the couch tells them that Eddie would be awake soon, if he didn't sleep in, and even though they were in the middle of their winter break from High Voltage, they knew he still woke up near dawn.

Grabbing the blanket from the back of the couch, they toss it haphazardly over their body before letting out a groan as they roll over to their front, face pressed into the cushions. A sigh, turning their face to the side, pulling out their phone and turning on some low music before closing their eyes.

Shuffling upstairs caught their attention a while later, a soft smile gracing their lips as they heard Eddie get up and start with his morning routine. They remained facedown on the couch, listening as Eddie padded around the second floor before they heard muffled footsteps on the staircase accompanied with the sound of his knees cracking with every step. They grimaced as they heard the cracking, rolling their ankle to pop it in solidarity, hearing him take a moment at the bottom of the stairs to let his knees rest before walking through the living room, pausing by the couch as he notices their prone form.

"Live wire? When'd you get home? And why are you on the couch and not in bed?" They turn their head, looking up at him, eyes heavy with exhaustion and lethargy. A warm hand finds its way into their hair and they nuzzle into the touch with a soft, tired smile.

"Not that long, only about half an hour or so," they answer the first question, pausing for the second question, feeling his fingers card through their hair as he moved to sit on the couch next to them, their body turning to give him room. "Wasn't sure when you'd be up, didn't wanna wake you up if you weren't planning on being up early. And I didn't wanna risk waking up Volt early. And I just. Didn't wanna walk upstairs just yet," they admit, their hand moving to loosely curl around his wrist, holding his hand close.

"How are you feeling, baby?" Nib bites their lip to keep it from quivering, eyes shutting as they press their face into his hand. A shaky breath, and he cards his fingers through their hair again, hoping to calm them down some. "It's alright, live wire. Let it out," he coaxes, and they inhale shakily, peeking their eyes open to look up at him, their eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

"I am… so tired, Eddie. I haven't been this tired, this drained in a long time, not since the Dateviators. I couldn't just… get away from it all, constantly in the thick of it all, nowhere to really escape to, to relax or recharge. Plus I really missed you two, and phone calls or video calls can only do so much in way of alleviating that ache," they say softly, and Eddie hums softly, leaning in to press a kiss to their temple. Their hand cups his neck, not really holding him in the awkward position, but giving them another point of contact with him.

"C'mon, baby, let's go upstairs, get you in bed so you're not lying on the couch. Your back is gonna hate it when you wake up if you stay here. And I know Volt will be happy to have you in bed with them," he says, standing up and helping them off the couch, gently pushing them toward the stairs, his hand never leaving the small of their back. He follows them upstairs, helping them out of their clothes as they lean into him, pressing a kiss to his neck. They toss their clothes into the hamper, thinking in the back of their mind that they should shower but deciding they didn't have the energy to do so right then, the bed looking even more inviting.

"G'nna join us in bed, Eddie? G'nna be lonely without you too," they ask, looking up at him. "Missed both of you, wanna lay, sleep between the both of you. Been too long," they add. A soft smile graces his lips, the sharp points of his canines peeking from his lips.

"I didn't have anything planned for the day, baby, I can lay with you two for a while." They smile, carefully climbing into their bed, trying not to rouse Volt from their slumber. It fails, and Nib sees their eyes peek open, pale eyes meeting theirs in the dim light that filtered through the blackouts. They smile, fangs peeking from their lips as they catch sight of their spouse, one arm coming out of the cocoon of blankets wrapped around them to pull them down and close to their chest. A yelp from Nib as they're pulled down, and Volt holds them close, one leg thrown over their hip to keep them close. They feel the bed dip behind them, their face pressed to Volt's firm chest, Eddie climbing into the bed, scooting close to their back, one arm snaking under Nib's head, pillowing their head with his bicep, other hand cradling their hip.

Nib relaxes into the embrace of their lovers, feeling the least irritable than they have since they left their house nearly two weeks ago to visit family for the holidays. "I love you two," they murmur into the quiet of the bedroom, lacing their fingers with Eddie's on their hip, tucking their head under Volt's chin. "Missed you both so much," they add, eyes closing as they feel their partners wrap themselves around them tighter, the warmth of their bodies helping them relax more.

"We missed you too, Live wire. And we love you too, so much," Volt purrs into their hair, the sentiment echoed against the back of their neck by Eddie. A small smile graces their lips, and they hum as they nuzzle into Volt's embrace, Eddie pressing against their back, and they sigh contentedly.
