Codex: Blessed Objects

---

An explanation given to a young time traveler from her mother, long overdue.

You see, there's a difference between making something a shikigami and blessing it. Making a shikigami puts a soul in the object you create, and it carries a portion of your spiritual energy with it. But think of a shikigami... sort of like our new microwave. You can set the time, you can set it for special foods, or to defrost -- you can give it instructions.

If you give it enough instructions, and leave it alone, it'll eventually become alive and able to act freely from you. That's more easily done with object shikigami than elemental, though.

But blessing an object just fills it with your spiritual power with no soul inside. This usually lasts longer, because without a soul it radiates the energy at a fixed rate until it's depleted. Doing this frees the object of all pollution, which is really useful if you fear poisoning. It's like our old microwave, which only had a dial you twisted to cook, remember that? Oh right, you were three. Hmm.

Anyway. Your father once asked me if I could do what that silly song said -- 'bless the rains down in Africa~' -- and I'll use it as an example for you. You could, in fact, bless rain. With your spiritual power, Kagome? You could manage it, but it'd kill any of your cousins to try -- it'd kill me to try too.

Now, if you want to learn how to make shikigami, let's get some of your old dolls out of the shed. Objects you're attached to are easier to start with.

Short, but I got a cat scratch right on my finger tip and typing is hella annoying this way.
