Summary
As much as I used to love fairy tales, I never actually believed in them. Not until that fateful day, anyway. After all, as the old saying goes: you’ve got to see it to believe it. Only my sister, Lauren, and I… we didn’t just see it. We lived it.

He could very well be projecting his own anxieties onto the locale and its people. However, to be fair, it’s not as if his anxieties aren’t without merit. He couldn’t help but think the hobbits he’d met last night had ulterior motives for wanting to speak with him. They’d shared a pint, a smoke, and a friendly conversation. They looked him dead in the eye with kind smiles… only to harass his wife the moment he left the room. The audacity was troubling.
For all the hobbit comforts afforded them thus far, Bree was certainly not like the Shire. Not at all.
It was a short walk back to the inn. People were preoccupied with their own affairs for the day, so it was easy enough to avoid attention. When they reached the Prancing Pony, Nob was outside the hobbit wing with his toolbox in hand, working at the windows — including the very same window they’d used as an exit just a few hours earlier. Hurrying close, it was easy to see that Nob was rebuilding the latches, which had been shattered sometime in the night. The ones he hadn’t fixed yet left the windows swinging ominously in the morning breeze. A quick glance into their room was a chilling sight: the room had been vandalized. The beds were overturned, with the pillows and blankets strewn all over the floor — but more than that, what was most distressing — was how everything in the suite was completely and violently destroyed. The luxurious blankets and sheets were in tatters, and the once plump pillows and bolsters were now nothing more than a fury of feathers coating the length of the room.
Frodo’s mouth ran dry at the sight. His cousins had made it appear as if they’d all been asleep in bed. And by the looks of it, someone had tried to murder them in their sleep. Or, at the very least, flew into a rage when they realized they’d been tricked.
White as a sheet, Sam gave a horrified gasp. “How awful!” he said. “That could have been us! Begging your pardon, Mister Frodo, but I don’t think I’ll be doubting your wife ever again.”
Frodo nodded numbly at that. After all, he was just thinking the very same thing.
