I read this in the span of about 48 hours, and it's quite good. The first span has you wondering when they'll get to the canon divergence, but once it hits, things ramp up in new directions quickly. Dunn is marvelous and complicated, Leonard is overall very sympathetic and fitting of The Star, and everything Moretti has me on the edge of my seat.
And, of course, Azik is as much a deus ex machina as a *diablo* ex machina. Fitting for someone of his path and power and rather a bit like a drunken genius with a double edged sword: cutting everything and everyone to the quick, albeit with varying degrees of intention.
One thing I'll note is that it feels like some plot threads are left dangling but given the scale of the story, they usually end up getting pulled on again at some point. However, to a reader who *isn't* going through all of this in two days, I'd be surprised if some threads don't end up forgotten entirely.
A great intro to the series proper if you've only ever watched the anime.
