Javier thinks of four options he could do here. He could stay silent–silence is always a valid option. He could break it gently to her, sit her down and express his condolences. He could do it bluntly, but tactfully, like the way you would hand the wife of a soldier a letter during a war. A good man would do any of those options, and not the fourth.
