Summary
It’s been a few days since The Favorite Character Awards.
Pomni has been through a number of bizarre things during her time in the circus. Candy truck chases, angel head horrors, minimum wage labor, athletic events, gun-filled battle royales. But none of these come close to what she witnesses on a seemingly innocent day full of beach-filled fun: Caine attempting to take his own life.
After managing to stop him, Pomni takes it upon herself (and is borderline forced to by Bubble) to help keep Caine’s mental state intact by engaging in improvised therapy sessions with him. After all, if Caine died, what would happen to the circus? And to the humans that lived within it? This was her only concern at first. But as Caine opens up to her more through these sessions, she realizes just how much the AI is hurting and how long he has been harboring these negative emotions.
Turns out Caine needs more help than she thought.
He's just as trapped in this game as they are. And worse.

Liked: Many scenes that depict relatable human emotions like social anxiety, especially that one chapter where Caine tries to make friends with players other than Pomni. Those emotions don’t come out of nowhere, but lead from the events depicted. The accurate voices from all the secondary characters, especially Jax’s harsh comments and Zooble and Gangle’s conflict. That the plot completely explores everything that was relevant.
Disliked: Pomni acting like an expert therapist (she thinks she is just muddling through, but it sure doesn’t seem like it) seems OOC. Caine and Bubble’s characters contradict the last two episodes of canon, though the author couldn’t have known what would be revealed. The narration anthropomorphizing Caine (not his feelings, but the reasons for them) too much. In the first half of the story, quite a few chapters described an emotion with a few redundant paragraphs that could have been cut, which made the scenes feel melodramatic.

Absolutely loved this one - showtime as a friendship/QPR/deep platonic bond is one of my favorites. Also I just think therapy for an AI is absolutely hilarious as a concept but it was done so well in this !!!
