Work Text:
Ruby smiled with glee, as Jaune struggled to open the door to the one bed apartment the two had rented. As cruel as it was, Ruby did find it amusing watching Jaune figure out how to work a doorknob while carrying her, her arms wrapped around the back of his neck.
Ruby was quite lucky. Well before she realized how she felt for Jaune, he was already taken by Pyrrha, even if he hadn’t known it. Luckily for future Ruby, Pyrrha shocked everyone, saying she was accepted to join a special accelerated program that would get her into the field helping people a lot sooner than expected. Everyone wished her farewell, not fully realizing they’d never see her again.
That was two years ago. Since then, Ruby and Jaune had gotten closer in their sophomore year, hanging out at Lancaster’s Arcade-Bar, watching the latest season of X-Ray & Vav, playing games, and chatting about weapons or tactics. It didn’t take the two long to notice the chemistry, and neither did their teammates, who teased them constantly for it.
Things had gotten more serious in their third year. The two were in a training mission-gone-wrong, surviving together out in the wilderness for a week chased by some strange scorpion faunus ranting about his goddess/queen. Jaune had unlocked his semblance, saving her life. After that, the doubts had gone away, and the two would share their first kiss at the Vytal Festival.
And now, on the eve of their fourth year at Beacon, the two had decided to meet up in Vale for a day, doing all their usual date activities. While at the Lancaster’s bar, however, Ruby surprised Jaune with a pair of cheap plastic cards.
“What are those?” Jaune asked.
“Hotel room keys,” Ruby replied with a grin. “For you and me, tonight. My treat.”
Jaune gulped. “Oh, well, thank you, hehe,” Jaune laughed nervously. “But I…”
“What?” Ruby leaned on her elbow, “Can’t accept a girl’s hospitality?”
“I…” Jaune sighed in defeat. “You know what, I accept. Just worried you overpaid for two rooms, is all.”
“Oh, don’t worry,” Ruby said. “It’s a single bedroom.”
“Oh good, that saves a lot-” Jaune skin turned white, sweat building up. “Uh…you…I’m guessing there’s a couch for me to sleep on.”
“Nope,” Ruby replied with a grin. “I wanna do it tonight. Let’s give it a shot.”
Jaune blinked. “Do…what?”
“Don’t play dumb with me,” Ruby crossed her arms. “You know very well what I mean.”
“Well…are you sure about it?” Jaune shrugged. “I mean…it’s a little quick…”
“I’ve been waiting for months to ask you,” Ruby replied. “What, do you not want to try it out?”
“I just…” Jaune scratched his head nervously. “I mean…I…”
“Yes or no, Jaune,” Ruby said. “Won’t make you if you don’t want to.”
“No, no,” Jaune waved his hands in front of him. “I mean, yes, I want to do it, but I just, uh…I didn’t know you-”
“Knew what sex was?” Ruby finished for him. “I’ve read some of Blake’s dirty books. I know what it is.”
“Well, that’s…not the best source.”
Ruby raised an eyebrow. “How’d you know?”
“I retract my statement.”
That was earlier. The rest of the afternoon was fun, but honestly, it dragged on. Maybe it was because Ruby was looking forward to this moment above all.
Eventually, Ruby reached out and helped Jaune with the door, swiping her card over the key-lock, while Jaune pushed down and opened, revealing their yet untouched room, with a single king sized bed in the center of the back wall, with nightstands on either side; a bathroom and walk-in closet off to the right; a TV and dresser opposite the bed; and a desk and chair on the far left wall. Two windows along the back wall showed downtown Vale below them.
“Don’t I have good taste?” Ruby asked with a smirk.
Jaune smiled back, as he carried her through the corridor. “You do,” was the best he could muster.
“Tired already?” Ruby asked with a side eye.
“A bit,” Jaune clicked. “But I’m still down to…uh…”
“Have sex?” Ruby asked rhetorically. “You need to grow up a little.”
“Well, guess I will tonight,” he halfheartedly quipped. The door shut behind the two, as Jaune lowered Ruby onto the bed. “Uh…do you want me to…”
“I’ll take my own clothes off,” Ruby replied. “Don’t want to rip anything, you know.”
“Right, right,” Jaune replied, before turning around to lift off his hoodie. “Just…let me know when you’re ready.”
“What?” Ruby asked, as she began untying the corset over her shirt. “Don’t wanna watch a girl undress?”
Jaune, now shirtless, froze and stiffened at the question. Ruby chortled at this, realizing how effective her teasing had become.
“Uh…no I just…thought you’d think I was a perv or something.”
“Jaune, you’ve seen me naked before, remember?” Ruby reminded him of that fateful mission last semester, when Jaune had to take her clothes off to treat her wounds. It was that time when Ruby realized she was fully comfortable with Jaune seeing her nude.
“Right, well…that was a different situation, you know,” Jaune tried to downplay it. “I had to or else I’d…”
Ruby noticed Jaune’s shoulders slump, as he trailed off. An awkward silence ensued, Ruby wondering what the matter was…before realizing…
“You…almost lost me…” Ruby said, looking down at her knees.
“I just…I was terrified, you know,” Jaune spoke up. “If I didn’t unlock my semblance then…I wouldn’t know what to do…it’s…I hate thinking about this…”
“Jaune,” Ruby called out quietly, “look.”
Jaune slowly turned around, blushing at the sight of Ruby, who now wore nothing but her black panties.
“Ruby?”
“I’m alive, aren’t I?” She asked rhetorically. “Thanks to you. I guess…I guess I wanna repay you for that, so…”
Jaune sighed. “Thanks…you’re right, I’m kicking myself here.”
Ruby shrugged. “No worries.”
Silence followed once more.
“I…hope I didn’t kill the mood,” Jaune said with a nervous laugh.
“Nope,” Ruby shook her head. “You ready?”
“I think…” Jaune blinked then winced. “Shoot, forgot to get condoms on the way.”
“Yang gave me pills,” Ruby replied. “Don’t worry about it.”
“Oh that’s go-YANG?” Jaune’s eyes widened with fear. “Sh-she knows?”
“Who else was I gonna ask about this stuff?” Ruby asked rhetorically. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure she keeps the teasing to a minimum at worst.”
“Right…” Jaune sighed, before he started unbuckling his belt, “I’ll hurry up.”
It took another minute for Jaune to kick off his jeans and underwear, before climbing into bed over a now fully nude Ruby. Upon seeing Jaune’s “stiffened appendage”, Ruby crossed her legs to protect her gate. She realized she wasn’t fully comfortable with being naked with Jaune as she thought she was. Was it because of the consequences about to come for her?
Jaune seemed to notice her discomfort…or it was simply because of his own reluctance. “Are you sure about this?”
Ruby took a breath, considering her options, before making her choice. Sitting up, she pressed her lips against Jaune, who only briefly resisted. The two got a taste of one another once again. It was an act both to answer Jaune’s question, as well as steal her own nerves for what was to come.
Soon, the two began rubbing their palms along each other's bodies. Ruby was content to run her hands up and down Jaune’s backside, while Jaune’s hands kept going, from her hips to her buttocks, until he reached her thighs. Ruby instinctively untangled her legs, leaving her lower mouth open to his advance.
The two broke off their kiss to catch their breath, staring blankly at each other's chests. Soon enough, Jaune looked up to Ruby. “You ready?”
Ruby gave him a cheeky smirk in response. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”
“Ok,” Jaune took a breath, as he maneuvered himself into position. Ruby herself was steadying her breathing. She knew from Blake about how hymens work, and she was afraid of the coming pain. She hoped it didn’t last long, or become a turn off, or leave a big mess.
“Ok, here I go,” Jaune took one last breath, before pushing his shaft inside of her pussy.
Ruby did feel a sharp, shocking pain initially. That was expected. What she wasn’t expecting was the images that came to mind: Beacon burning; Penny and Pyrrha dying; her teammates lying lifeless and maimed; and Jaune…
“Stop!” She pressed herself upwards, struggling to catch her breath. Tears streamed down her face, struggling to process what she witnessed. None of that happened, right? Was it just her imagination getting to her? It felt too real to be…
“Ruby?”
Jaune’s call broke Ruby out of her spell, looking over towards Jaune, whom she unknowingly pushed onto the floor. He looked at her with palpable concern.
“Ruby…are you alright?” Jaune asked reluctantly. “I…I’m sorry if I hurt you...”
Ruby couldn’t get the words out of her throat. Instead, she shook her head.
Jaune turned his gaze away from her, occasionally glancing towards her every few seconds. “Do you…wanna be alone right now?”
“I…” Ruby whimpered, “I…I…” she needed him right now, but how…how could she explain this…explain what she saw so vividly.
Luckily for her, Jaune got off the floor and pulled her into an embrace. “It’ll be okay, Ruby. Just breathe.”
Ruby did as she was told, trying to control her breath. She appreciated the warmth of their embrace, pressing her cheek against his chest. She didn’t want to lose this.
“Don’t die, Jaune”, she yelped.
“What?” Jaune loosened his grip ever so slightly at her remark. “What do you mean?”
“Just…I don’t wanna lose you,” Ruby eeked out. “What I saw…”
“W-what did you see?” Jaune asked worriedly. “What’s happening?”
“I…I saw you…” Ruby struggled to speak, “in my arms…lifeless eyes…everyone was dead…I don’t…I don’t wanna be alone…I don’t wanna…be alone…”
“You’re not alone, Ruby,” Jaune replied with desperation. “You’re not. I’m here for you. I’m not dying. I’m here.”
“I…I…just…” Ruby sniffled, the words dying in her throat. She couldn’t take it anymore.
“Just…take a breather,” Jaune instructed softly. “You wanna lie down?”
It took Ruby a moment to process her reply. “Y-yeah.”
Jaune slowly lowered Ruby back onto the mattress, laying down by her side. Ruby just stared up at the ceiling fan, zoning out as it swirled.
After a minute, Jaune piped up once more. “You good?”
Ruby paused before replying. “I…I think so,” She sniffled.
“You…wanna talk about it?” Jaune asked with reluctance.
Ruby pondered that question, more-so the answer. How could she explain what she had just seen?
“I…when you…” Ruby didn’t know what words to use, “when you pierced me, I…I felt a sharp pain. But then I just saw this flash, and…it just felt…real…as if it’s already happened…or it’s going to happen…”
“You think you saw the future?” Jaune inquired.
Ruby sighed. “Gods, I hope not.”
Silence ensued once again.
“So…” once again, Jaune broke the ice. “I just…if it is a vision of the future, then…that means we can change it…right?”
“Huh?”
“I mean…” Jaune stammered. “We can work together to avoid it, right?”
“I…hope so,” Ruby replied, the confidence she had minutes before having completely evaporated.
Another silence ensued, the doubts swirling in her mind. She could not remember much besides ‘the end’, all the stuff between being a rough blur. She strained to recall those visions, but only the endings came back to her. Ruby let out a sigh of defeat.
“Let’s call it a night,” Jaune sat himself up and scooted to the edge of the bed, “I can grab some spare comforters and sleep on the floor, give you some spa-”
Ruby rolled over and wrapped her arms around him. “I’m…you can sleep with me tonight, by my side.”
“Y-y-you sure?”
“Yeah, I’m sure.”
“Alright,” Jaune replied. “But I do wanna get my boxers back on, give myself a little dignity.”
“Sure,” Ruby released her grip. “I’m…gonna take a shower real quick, get some clothes on.”
“I’ll change the sheets, then,” Jaune replied, pointing towards the blood spot on the bed from their incomplete encounter. Ruby winced at the sight.
“Yeah…that’d be nice.”
With that, Ruby picked up her clothes and rushed to the shower. It took her a minute to clean off the blood. After drying off, she threw on her pajamas, and climbed into bed with Jaune.
“Sweet dreams,” Jaune said, with more weight behind the phrase given the circumstances.
“I’ll try,” Ruby pecked Jaune on the cheek. “Let’s talk in the morning.”
Jaune blushed at the light kiss. “Sure thing.”
With that, the two pulled the sheets over them, and called it a night. Ruby took a bit longer to fall asleep, staring at the ceiling, trying to drown out the doubts and fears…before slumber took hold.
Ruby’s rest was far from peaceful. These visions accosted her in her dreams, the sight of her friends suffering. However, those soon faded away, as she felt a potent warmth enrapturing her, easing her mind.
She hadn’t noticed Jaune, awoken by her restless tossing and turning and cries, as he pulled her into his arms. Jaune was struggling to sleep now, wondering just how bad these visions must have been for Ruby to be like this. He wondered if he should contact anyone, whether it be Ruby’s teammates or his own, or their family, anybody, about Ruby’s issues.
“Hang in there, Ruby,” he whispered under his breath. “I’ll be here for you, no matter what.”
