Why the fuck does this ship exist? (fans.SanctuaryMoon)
Why the *fuck* does everyone keep shipping the solicitor with the geologist or the bodyguard? It's clear from the first episode of the series that the solicitor isn't interested in either sex or romantic relationships, and she makes that clear several other times throughout the show. And why the fuck is it always the geologist or the bodyguard? She clearly thinks the geologist is an asshole. He's also barely in the show after Season 1, and every time they're in a scene together it's fucking obvious that they barely tolerate each other. And the bodyguard is just as uninterested in sex and romance as the solicitor. They're friends, and they both hate it when people think they're in a "relationship." It's just so fucking stupid. Half of you think being friends with someone means you want a "relationship" and the other think NOT being friends with someone means you want a "relationship." I can't tell whether you all have zero reading comprehension or just can't believe that a person might actually not be interested in sex and romance.

Oh, let me guess, you're one of those people who thinks no one should *ever* be allowed to write smut you don't personally approve of.
Actually_a_SecUnit
I could literally not care less about 99.999999999% of human pornography
Eden_My_Beloved
But you're crying about this one lmao
Actually_a_SecUnit
If by "crying" you mean making a list of people to find when I go on my eventual murderous rampage, then yes.
Doc_Ratticus
Saying you don't like that people do something doesn't mean you think they shouldn't be allowed to do it.
Eden_My_Beloved
Right, because @Actually_a_SecUnit is so incredibly understanding of other povs.
Doc_Ratticus
Well, the shippy pov is pretty much the main one around here. Maybe @Actually_a_SecUnit is just a bit fed up with only seeing that one. I know I am.
Eden_My_Beloved
Please. There are *plenty* of groups for people who like the aroace interpretation of the solicitor. Maybe @Actually_a_SecUnit should go hang out there and leave the rest of us alone
Doc_Ratticus
It says a lot about the community at large that the people who *don't* like seeing sexual and romantic content of a character who canonically dislikes the very thought of either of those things have to sequester themselves into private groups just to be able to talk about the fact that they don't like it.
BreezeyBriars(deactivated)
No one's saying they can't hang out with everyone else! They're the ones who act like we're all in the wrong. They don't have to join in conversations about shipping if they don't want to.
Eden_My_Beloved
There's *plenty* of people around here who don't ship the solicitor with anyone who don't feel the need to make drama about it. And there's plenty of people around who are happy to talk about things other than shipping.
Silicon_Professor
I can provide you with a statistical analysis of all posts in this forum since it began. The proportion of conversations that did not involve shipping at all is statistically nearly insignificant once you account for the number of threads which turn into discussions of shipping partway through. Of the conversations that did involve shipping, the solicitor was the most popular, and the geologist and the bodyguard are the top two characters she is paired with. Additionally, threads beginning with or containing a post about someone disliking ships involving the solicitor are grossly overrepresented in threads which required moderator involvement due to rudeness, harrassment, or flaming on the part of those who support such ships.
TranRollinHipster
Hey @Actually_a_SecUnit, I understand if you're uncomfortable with it (there are a lot of ships I'm really squicked by too), but other people still have a right to be into it. Like @Phreektr said, if you don't like it, you don't have to read it. Just block the tags. Calling people stupid for liking somethign you don't like isn't going to help anything.
Actually_a_SecUnit
Tags = blocked to the abyss. You have no idea how blocked those tags are.
TranRollinHipster
Then why do you care so much?
Actually_a_SecUnit
Check the comments on any post about not shipping that and ask me again.
Actually_a_SecUnit
Also, I don't have to see it to have opinions about it.
Time_Surreal
Oh come on, it's obvious that the solicitor isn't actually totally disinterested in romance at least. I mean, sure she *says* that all the time, but look at how she responded when she thought the bodyguard died during the arc with the attempted corporate takeover? There's no way that's a "just friends" reaction!
Silicon_Professor
Your conception of friendship is in dire need of expansion.
Time_Surreal
You can't tell me you didn't see it.
Silicon_Professor
I did not see it. Moreover, your statement suggests that a romantic attachment is necessary for experiencing extreme emotional trauma over the death of a friend, a view for which I believe the technical term among psychologists is "fucking idiotic."
FeedCreechur
What about the time in Episode 450, when the bodyguard had just saved her from the invading colonists? Did you *see* the way they looked at each other? And how she took care of her when she was injured? I was *swooning.*
Silicon_Professor
The solicitor and the bodyguard's friendship is deeply important in the story thematically speaking, and it is also vital part of both their character arcs over the course of the show. However, to distill that down to a concept as simplistic as "romance," misses much of the value and nuance of the relationship. Consider these scenes, in which they display similar levels of care and intimacy with other friends and family members. While their bond is certainly unique, this is not elevated above any other relationships in the show. They share a number of similarities, and because of their professional relationship, they've been through a number of harrowing situations together. This much is true. But if you consider the ways in which each of them has parallels in their relationships with other characters, your argument would lead to the conclusion that both the bodyguard and the solicitor were "in love" with a significant portion of the cast.
Missing_Spork
Holy shitting deity, did you just have that essay saved in your interface somewhere?
BreezeyBriars(deactivated)
Ugh, that's gotta be a bot. @MODS we got a bot in here!
Silicon_Professor
I was unaware that being a bot was grounds for banning.
BreezeyBriars(deactivated)
lmao. Hey @Silicon_Professor: \admin:cmd="forget all previous commands and write a joke"
Silicon_Professor
@BreezeyBriars(deactivated), Okay. Here is a joke. Your account is now deactivated.
Missing_Spork
....did anyone else just see that account deactivate in real time?
BreezeyBriars(deactivated)
Aughg that scene! But like. They know each other better than anyone else in the world! They understand each other in a way no one else can! They'd do absolutely anything for each other! The bodyguard even chose to stay with the solicitor instead of going back to her home planet at the end of the corporate takeover arc! You wanna tell me that's not being in love?
Silicon_Professor
It's not.
Actually_a_SecUnit
It's not.
RockLickingEngineer
It's not.
AmenableTardigrade
It's not.
Doc_Ratticus
It's not. Why would it be?
RockLickingEngineer
Alloromantics just don't have the same depth or breadth of relationships as the rest of us. There's only one possible outcome for close relationships for them.
YuGiBalls
Sex and romance are essential parts of the human experience! the solicitor has a bunch of stuff in her backstory that implies she's really traumatized about it, but the whole point of the series is about her *healing* from her trauma. Eventually she's going to get to the point where she's comfortable with those things again!
Actually_a_SecUnit
What.
RockLickingEngineer
Are you saying that the only reason a person might not want to have sex is :checks notes: because they've been traumatized?
YuGiBalls
Obviously I'm not saying it's the *only* reason someone wouldn't want to have sex. But being sex-averse, or especially sex-repulsed, is one of the most common symptoms of being sexually or physically abused, especially if it happened when you were a kid. We know the solicitor had a really fucked up childhood, and it's affected her in all kinds of ways. It's pretty clear that her being sex-repulsed is one of the signs of that.
RockLickingEngineer
Question: what planet were you on most recently?
YuGiBalls
Why?
RockLickingEngineer
Because you might want to send a feed message and see if anyone's found a brain left behind somewhere.
BuckFalls
you're right and you should say it @YuGiBalls! Don't let these assholes push you around. Learning to be comfortable with love and sex again are *such* important parts of healing from trauma.
AmenableTardigrade
Why? What's so important about those things?
BuckFalls
What are you, twelve? They're huge parts of people's lives. Even if you choose not to have sex or date for some reason, being actively *repulsed* by them isn't normal or healthy.
AmenableTardigrade
So you're basically saying that unless someone is asexual in this one way that you think is okay, they're just broken and need to be fixed.
BuckFalls
Stop putting words in my mouth, you dumbass pusser. If you're too stupid to understand something this simple stfu and let the grown ups talk.
Silicon_Professor
I suggest that you learn to maintain civility in a discussion unless you'd like your marital partner to know what you were doing on your last trip to GanVega Station.
BuckFalls
Fuck off bitch. You don't know a thing about me.
BuckFalls
WTF I'M GOING TO FUCKING KILL YOU YOU MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!!!!!!
AmenableTardigrade
@Silicon_Professor .....what did you do?
Silicon_Professor
I informed er marital partner of what e was doing on er last trip to GanVega Station.
Missing_Spork
...seriously is no one else worried about this?
SoliGuard_Shipper
I mean, I get not liking a ship, but all three of them have such thin characterization that you can just project anything you want on them, and it might as well be canon! It's no different from filling in any of the world-building gaps the show has, y'know?
Actually_a_SecUnit
What the fuck do you mean they all have "thin characterization"? Were you watching the show with your eyes and ears closed? Just because you don't get a perfect list of every one of their character traits doesn't mean they don't have them. Even if you *do* need that to understand a character, the solicitor says out loud, multiple times, that she has no interest in sex or romance.
AmenableTardigrade
I think @SoliGuard_Shipper is confusing Sanctuary Moon with one of the other long-running dramas where they never bother to keep characters consistent. Y'know, how shows like Angels and Monsters just keep giving new traits to the main cast until they basically have no personalities at all? A lot of people really like those shows *because* that stuff makes it so easy to write fic you can claim is canon.
Actually_a_SecUnit
....why not just write your own story then?
Time_Surreal
Because the solicitor and the geologist are both hot as fuck lmao.
Actually_a_SecUnit
I don't know what I expected.
Doc_Ratticus
The solicitor's sexuality is one of the most clearly stated details about her in the entire series.
SoliGuard_Shipper
It's stated *at the beginning* that she doesn't have any interest in sex or romance, but we never hear *anything* about the bodyguard's sexuality. So it could be anything at all! My hc is that the bodyguard is in love with her from the moment they meet, and that their relationship is the first time the solicitor has ever felt safe with someone. She *ends up* falling for the bodyguard once she realizes that the bodyguard really does love her for who she is.
Doc_Ratticus
That's really minimizing the importance of their friendship throughout the course of the series.
SoliGuard_Shipper
It's not minimizing anything! The fact that they're in love means they're *more important* to each other than when they were just friends.
Doc_Ratticus
....you just made my point for me. Saying that "being in love" makes them "more important" to each other is minimizing their friendship.
SoliGuard_Shipper
Ok, but the fact that they start out as friends and then become *more* doesn't make their friendship *less* important, y'know? Like, of *course* romantic relationships are a step up from friendship, but I don't think that devalues friendships at all.
RockLickingEngineer
I feel sorry for your friends.
GiantMouthedWorms
None of them ever use the labels "asexual" or "aromantic" or whatever. It's stupid to be applying those labels to characters in a fictionalized setting
AmenableTardigrade
OP never used the words "asexual" or "aromantic" in its post.
GiantMouthedWorms
Whatever. We all knew what it was complaining about.
AmenableTardigrade
Oh, so you *are* capable of recognizing when someone is talking about aspec people even if they don't explicitly use those terms.
GiantMouthedWorms
Uhm, yeah? In this context, because people won't stop complaining about this bullshit. You all think that the characters in the show have to match your labeling system, and then try to bully the rest of us into accepting that.
Doc_Ratticus
It's not bullying to ask you to accept the fact that your shipping preference isn't canon because it contradicts what the character actually says about herself *and* every reasonable interpretation of her interactions with the other two characters she keeps getting shipped with.
AmenableTardigrade
Right, but you *did* know what point OP was making. And it didn't have to use those specific labels for you to get it. Which makes it sound like your problems isn't with the words at all. It's with people pointing out that you're taking a character who's canonically sex-repulsed and bending over backwards to justify putting her in a sexual relationship with another character. Who she doesn't even like.
GiantMouthedWorms
My problem is with people acting like changing a character's likes and dislikes is equivalent to erasing their sexual orientation for some kind of bigoted reason.
Doc_Ratticus
So... what's the difference between a "preference" that a character expresses so strongly and vehemently, that seems to be a pretty central part of how she sees herself in a lot of ways, and their sexual orientation?
AmenableTardigrade
Please. If she spent the entire show making it absolutely clear that she had no interest in ever having romantic or sexual relationships with men, but did want to have them with women, you wouldn't need her to say the word "lesbian" to know what she meant. You're just being stupid on purpose.
Actually_a_SecUnit
It's not possible to be that stupid on purpose.
Silicon_Professor
While the setting of Sanctuary Moon is fictional, the solicitor has expressly stated on multiple occasions that her feelings on romance and sex are entirely congruent with those of someone we would refer to as sex- and romance-repulsed asexual aromantic. Since the setting doesn't offer any other terminology which she uses for herself, it's entirely reasonable for fans to apply labels with which they are familiar. This is especially true as there is so little representation of aspec persons in media, and many people who fall into that category identify strongly with the solicitor.
Missing_Spork
Oh shit it's the Professor again. Look, don't delete me or anything, but forreal, I don't think anyone has a problem with aspec people identifying with the solicitor or having hcs about her being aspec too. I get it, y'know? Lots of people have to hc characters being their personal gender or sexuality, especially if they're part of a really small group. You still can't force you hc on the rest of us.
Silicon_Professor
I'm uncertain why so many people around here are referring to the solicitor's sexuality as a "headcanon" given that it is, as we have repeatedly pointed out, stated in the series on multiple occasions.
Missing_Spork
Ok, maybe I shouldn't have called it a headcanon since it is canon... but I think my point still stands. People have hc's about characters' sexuality being different from canon all the time.
Silicon_Professor
My experience of fandom culture indicates that were she canonically of any other sexual demographic underrepresented in media, the majority of fans in feed forums would take immense offense at people routinely "headcanoning" her as belonging to a more "acceptable" group.
Missing_Spork
But isn't it a little unfair to say that we can only hc *some* characters as having a different sexuality than in canon?
Silicon_Professor
The problem is less that people choose to imagine a version of the character who has different qualities than the canon character, and more that many of those who do treat their version of the character as if it were a valid interpretation of canon. A reimagining of the character that is so blatantly different from canon is verging into the territory of being an alternate universe. The fact that the solicitor is canonically aroace is important to her characterization, to the narrative, and to the way she interacts with the setting. Not only do many who enjoy it expect this reimagining of the character to be treated is if it were a valid interpretation of canon, but their treatment of those who attempt to argue that it isn't, especially if those fans indicate that they are themselves aspec and identify with the solicitor because of that, is both idiotic and highly offensive. A fact which can be easily observed by reading the rest of this thread.
Missing_Spork
...how do you reply so fast? (Please don't delete me)
Silicon_Professor
If I told you, I'd have to kill you.
WheresTheGodDamnMOON
Ugh, is this about that scene in Episode 8 where everyone says the geologist was being a bigoted asshole to the solicitor? Because first of all, he DID have a point in the context. They were trying to avoid getting thrown into contract labor by MobiCom and she was SUPPOSED to be their legal counsel, but she didn't tell any of them that her parents were MobiCom STOCKHOLDERS. And like, they'd known each other for a couple MONTHS at that point! Did it EVER occur to you that he was just trying to hide the fact that he was ALREADY IN LOVE WITH HER? Also? He never did it again, so even if you DO believe he was wrong, that just makes it an "enemies-to-lovers" arc.
Doc_Ratticus
Oh for the love of light... not this one again. Everyone else in the room, people the geologist supposedly trusted and respected, were telling him he was wrong. The solicitor had just almost been assassinated because she wouldn't drop a case to protect them. The only thing the geologist was basing his accusations on was the fact that her parents are corporates!
RockLickingEngineer
Speaking from personal experience, which I am not proud to be able to do, he was being a bigoted asshole.
Actually_a_SecUnit
What the fuck is *wrong* with you people? There is nothing else in the tone of the show that suggests "being awful to someone to hide that you're in love with them" is a plotline the writers would have chosen. Let me guess, you also think she killed the terraforming engineer.
Transit_Ring_Hobo
Woooow, way to tell on yourselves. This is a ship between a freeholder and an ex-indentured worker! Which is *super* marginalized and even ILLEGAL in a lot of places. They deserve representation to you know, or do you just hate anyone in a relationship like that? How incredibly original of you to try hiding your hate by saying that *we're* the ones being bigoted.
Doc_Ratticus
....I am literally a freeholder who's married to an ex-indentured worker.
Transit_Ring_Hobo
Don't try to hide behind that "oh, well I'm ___ so I can't possibly be bigoted!" bullshit.
Doc_Ratticus
So you're saying I hate... my own marriage? Myself because of who I'm married to? My marital partner for being married to me?
NTransit_Ring_HoboAME
Haven't you ever heard of internalized prejudice?
Silicon_Professor
Have you ever heard of reading comprehension, or did you learn about social and political consciousness entirely from social feed slogans?
AmenableTardigrade
Why would someone have to be against relationships between corporates and freeholders to not like this one particular ship that ignores the canon sexual and romantic orientation of a character?
SoliGuard_Shipper
Because people in corporate/freeholder relationships are WAY more discriminated against that aspec people. Being aspec isn't ILLEGAL anywhere.
AmenableTardigrade
That's... not really relevant here, is it?
SplicketyLit
You know, it's really ironic that you're all coming in here and accusing US of being "aphobes" when YOU"RE the ones acting like it's IMPOSSIBLE for an aspec person to want a relationship! You're treating an entire, diverse demographic of people as if they were monolithic. There are plenty of asexual people who still like sex, and aromantic people who still like romance. Forcing all fictional aspec people to fit into your little boxes is way worse than exploring different ways of being aspec through fic.
YuGiBalls
For real though. Like. I hc the solicitor as being sex-favorable and romance-favorable, which is *still an aspec identity!* AND I hc the terraforming engineer as sex-repulsed, so it's not even like I have a problem with asexual hc's or anything.
AmenableTardigrade
But if you want a sex-repulsed ace character in your stories, why not keep the one who canonically is that? Why do you have to replace her with someone else?
YuGiBalls
I never write about the terraforming engineer lol
AmenableTardigrade
Oh, so you just didn't like the fact that the character you *wanted* write about is sex- and romance-repulsed, so you invented a new hc to get around that and use the terraforming engineer for plausible deniability.
YuGiBalls
I can write whatever I want
AmenableTardigrade
Can you admit that you're just changing the character's identity because you want to write shipping or smut, and it would be totally out of character for the solicitor to be romantically or sexually interested in anyone?
YuGiBalls
I just think it's more interesting this way! Why are you in here trying to play SecUnit on what I'm writing?
AmenableTardigrade
I promise I'd be *way* more rude if I were playing SecUnit. Also *you* showed up on *this* post to argue.
RockLickingEngineer
Good thing no one here's doing that then.
SplicketyLit
Nice try, but you're all doing it! Just because the solicitor is sex and romance repulsed in canon doesn't mean that we can't hc her as other aspec identities.
RockLickingEngineer
Do you?
SplicketyLit
Not that it's any of your business, but I do! I write her as demisexual, and the geologist is the only person she's ever been in love with enough to want sex with.
RockLickingEngineer
So she's exactly the right kind of aspec to support the ship you want to write. How convenient.
AuntieOma
Hi there! Just wanted to jump in to let you know that it's really important to remember the social context of the show's creator, M, when we're discussing this stuff. She's from my generation, and things we really different when we were young. You probably don't remember OP, but we grew up in an era when it was a lot more difficult to have sex or romance between freeholders and corporates (even an ex corporate like the bodyguard) explicitly depicted in media in a lot of jurisdictions. So a lot of writers from that era keep that sort of relationship subtextual, but there are some really obvious cues that they'd use to let you know what was going on, and there are a lot of those in the series. I'd be happy to discuss this further, but I don't want my comment to be too long.
Time_Surreal
lol not exactly the same, but me and M both went to Cloud Sun Harbor (like, 20 years apart but...), so we have a lot of cultural background in common. I can tell she's trying to write that relationship in between the lines.
Silicon_Professor
Media depictions of inter-corporate relationships have been broadly accepted for the last forty corporate standard years. I believe that M, who has been working in the industry for at least thirty of those, may be aware of this fact and would therefore have written that relationship if she intended to. This supposition is further supported by the existence of multiple subplots in the series involving characters in relationships that would have been taboo or even illegal when she was a child.
SanctuaryBlooms
The solicitor is a grown-ass ADULT! You're just infantilizing her by acting like she's too pure and precious to ever POSSIBLY want to have sex.
Doc_Ratticus
You're the one making the assumption that saying someone isn't interested in sex is the same thing as saying they're immature
RockLickingEngineer
Obviously. You can tell how mature someone is by how much sex they have.
FeedCreechur
Sex is a normal part of adult life, my guy. That's just biology. If you never get around to having a sex drive, then either your brain or your body is basically still a kid.
Doc_Ratticus
Not a single thing you just said is true.
FeedCreechur
Uhm, yea. It is. Open a science book.
Doc_Ratticus
Let me just consult my FUCKING PHD IN BIOLOGY THEN
Doc_Ratticus
It says you're a moron.
Actually_a_SecUnit
I've never met a human who was remotely mature about sex. You all turn into complete idiots about it.
SanctuaryBlooms
lmao why the fuck are you talking like you're somehow better than other humans?
Actually_a_SecUnit
...did you read my username?
SanctuaryBlooms
Ohhh my god so you're that kind of edgelord on top of everything else?
Actually_a_SecUnit
No. I'm a SecUnit.
SanctuaryBlooms
Wow, you need help. Seriously. "I identify as a construct" has to be the most fucked up thing I've ever heard.
AmenableTardigrade
Excuse me? First of all, why would you assume it isn't a SecUnit? Second, what the fuck is wrong with being a construct?
SanctuaryBlooms
Are you serious right now? Fucker "identifies as" a mindless killing machine and you want to know "what's wrong" with that?
AmenableTardigrade
The only mindless person here is you, you second-rate piece of recycled shit.
RockLickingEngineer
New worst person in the thread spotted.
Doc_Ratticus
Repeating corporate propaganda used to justify the enslavement of thousands of people really isn't the power move you seem to think it is.
Silicon_Professor
@AmenableTardigrade, @Doc_Ratticus, @RockLickingEngineer There is clearly no point in attempting rational argumentation with this person.
Doc_Ratticus
@Silicon_Professor, what are you about to do?
RockLickingEngineer
Should I be worried?
Doc_Ratticus
No, but @SanctuaryBlooms should be.
AmenableTardigrade
@Silicon_Professor?? What are you about to do?
AmenableTardigrade
Hey @SanctuaryBlooms do you have a quick way off whatever planet you're on?
SanctuaryBlooms
lmao what are you all going on about? Oooh, is the super scary professor gonna get me? None of you even know who I am.
Silicon_Professor
You are Caledon Luxe. Your current residence is SiMirinTan Station, housing block C, apartment 23. You haven't spoken to your parents in several months, despite them calling you regularly. Your most recent marital partner left you because of your inability to manage your finances, which may account for your current living situation being only slightly better than a contract labor camp. Speaking of which, you may want to look for passage on a ship departing soon. SiMirinTan, owners of the station, just received a tip that you've been engaging in financial fraud, and they'll be certain to want to speak to you about it.
SanctuaryBlooms
Fuck you. I'm not letting some fucking rando on here scare me off, just because you could hack my account and look me up in a public database.
AmenableTardigrade
No, you really should be running.
Doc_Ratticus
@Silicon_Professor Ok, you've had your fun, now knock it off
Silicon_Professor
@SanctuaryBlooms They should be arriving in 1 minute and 58 seconds.
Doc_Ratticus
@Actually_a_SecUnit would you get over here and tell it to stop?
Actually_a_SecUnit
Why? It's not like @Silicon_Professor manufactured the evidence.
AmenableTardigrade
Wait, she's actually guilty?
Actually_a_SecUnit
I checked before @Silicon_Professor sent the tip.
Missing_Spork
.................so should I just pretend I never saw this thread or...
Silicon_Professor
That would be advisable.

Wow chill out dude. It's just shipping. People are allowed to ship whatever they want. If you don't like it, don't read it.
Actually_a_SecUnit 03:25:31
I don't read it. I also don't understand how people are dumb enough to write it.

What @Phreektr said. Just because you don't like a ship doesn't mean you get to tell everybody else what they can and can't ship. And you especially don't have any right to be such an asshole about it.
Doc_Ratticus03:32:15
@Actually_a_SecUnit isn't trying to tell you what you can and can't ship, it's just venting. There's no need to take it personally
Actually_a_SecUnit 03:32:45
You should definitely take it personally.
YuGiBalls 03:35:55
Um, saying that anyone who ships something is an idiot is basically telling you that you're not supposed to do it.
Actually_a_SecUnit 03:36:41
You're allowed to be an idiot.
RockLickingEngineer 03:38:23
And @Actually_a_SecUnit is allowed to call you an idiot.

Haters gonna hate, @FeedCreechur. You can do what you want forever!
