Summary
Stanley found himself shifting his weight from one leg to the other. He had been standing in front of his pa's pawn shop since late morning with no break, and his feet were aching something awful. Somehow, though, it still hurt less than the pitiful glances he received from the passersby throughout the day, silently reading the sign he'd been holding up stating Extra Stan, 3 dollars or better offer. A creative punishment his pa forced him to endure.
"No one took you up on your offer, huh?" He asked, gesturing to Stanley's cardboard sign. His stomach lurched. Pa was still angry.
"No, sir," Stanley replied, trying to keep his voice level. If he let his shame show, his pa would use it as an opportunity to lecture him about how a real man shows no weakness. Stanley had to play it cool and do as pa says to make the transition back inside as easy as possible.
"I'm not surprised. Who would want you? They'd want a child they could be proud of, not one who gets F minuses on their exams."
Filbrick locks Stanley out of the house until he's learned his lesson. They both find out what happens to unattended children once the sun goes down.
