Summary
Hua Cheng took a step towards the bed and leaned closer, his inky eyes studying him closely. After a moment he sighed and flopped on the bed next to him, a hand lazily reaching up to Xie Lian's head and scratching it gently.
"Who am I kidding, we both know I'm going to keep you. I don't even get why...there's just something about you that won't let me throw you out the door."
Unable to say anything Xie Lian tilted his head slightly and watched as the corner of the ghost's thin lips arched a little. It was such an endearing look.

Xie Lian is turned into a ferret by a curse and gets adopted by an unaware Hua Cheng. The ghost turns out to be very doting, exceptionally charming and severely starved for talking about a mysterious lost beloved of his.

"Hua Cheng let out a long sigh. “I miss him so much,” he admitted after a moment. “It’s been five hundred years, I still miss him everyday like in the first one. Sometimes the pain is more dull, sometimes it swallows me until I ask myself how I can even exist if all I feel is emptiness and loss.” Xie Lian’s heart trembled, struck by the unguarded sincerity of the ghost’s suffering. Such fragile feelings coming from such an unbreakable man, he didn’t know how he was supposed to mend a wound so profound.
“I know he’s not well,” Hua Cheng went on. “It would be more bearable if I knew he was alright out there but I know he’s not. I’m afraid that he’s lonely, that he’s cold, that he doesn’t have money or food, that he doesn’t have a place to sleep. Everyday when I wake up I look out of the window and worry. When it’s summer and the sun is high in the sky I think, will he have fresh water to drink, some cool place to wait out the harshest hours? Does he have a decent enough job to sustain himself or is he under the scolding rays taking over the thoughest jobs because he can’t have better ones? When it’s winter it’s terrible. It consumes me. Does he have gloves, does he have a thick coat, does he have a warm place to stay? Is he out in the snow, are his fingers getting so cold he can’t feel them anymore, are his lips blue and trembling with cold, his eyes glazed over because he can’t…” Hua Cheng’s breaths started coming short and shallow, he rasped for air as if he needed more of it, as if he needed it at all. Irrational, wild panic enveloped Xie Lian and he immediately freed himself from the ghost’s arm to turn around and press his paws agains Hua Cheng’s cheeks. One dark eye refocused on him slowly and bit by bit the ghost’s breaths calmed down until they stopped. The ghost’s arm snaked around him once more and hugged him even more tightly. He was silent for a while.
“I need to find him. I need to know he’s safe,” he whispered letting his eye fall closed. “It’s all I need,” he added as another tear left his closed lid and rolled against his cheek.""“It doesn’t matter if he’s fucked someone else, it doesn’t matter if he’s fucked ten people a day. Why would it?”
He Xuan didn’t seem convinced. “You haven’t.”
“Of course I haven’t, I love him.” Hua Cheng leaned back in his seat, the hands supporting him gave a twitch but his voice stayed even.
“You could have slept with other people even if you love him,” the other pointed out crunching on melon seeds.
“I have no interest in it.” There was a pause. “But if he does it doesn’t matter to me.”
He Xuan pointed vaguely to the point where Hua Cheng’s knuckles were straining white on the floor. “You’re obviously jealous,” he observed.
“I am. But it doesn’t matter. I don’t expect anything of him, I’m here to love him, worship him and protect him. I don’t need him to do or be anything,” Hua Cheng answered simply, although there was pain in his voice." -
