Work Text:

Dick loves his family.

He loves his husband like he breathes, his dad and brothers and sister like water, his friends like blood.

He's got everything he needs and then some. A home, filled with warmth and dog hair from Haley. He gets to bond with his niece whenever he wants. His life is amazing; he's fufilled.

Except he's not.

He wants kids. Desperately.

Everytime he sees Wally with Lian or Barry and Iris' kids or even kids they save, it's fuel to the fire. Because Wally's amazing with kids. He's gentle and comforting and playful and perfect and-

Dick wants to see him with their own kids.

And it's not as though they never talked about kids or tried to make it happen, it just never worked.

The first time they talked about it, was about a year before Jason died. Obviously it wasn't a priority, they were young, still boyfriends, but they knew what they wanted.

The second time, after they got married, everything had been set. They'd been preparing, talking to an adoption agency and social workers. They'd gotten all the home and background checks. They'd been so close. And then Jason came back, and all those plans were put on the back burner.

It became a pattern after that. Everytime they tried to put the plan in motion something halted it. Whether it was off-world missions or family emergencies, something always got in the way.

After the seventh attempt Dick cracked. Wally came home to Dick curled in a ball on their bed, crying silently.

"Hey hey, what's wrong? Did something happen?" Wally's voice had been soft, like his hands were rubbing up and down Dick's back.

"I'm tired of never getting what I want. Just once, I want things to work out for us but they never do," It didn't make sense, why it hurt so much that nothing ever worked. He knew everything that blocked their way was important. He knew that and that wasn't the problem. All he was missing in his life was his own little family, and he couldn't do it.

So they stopped pursuing it. It was only supposed to be for a little while, but as always time has a way of flying by. Before he could protest three years had passed and the desire simmered down.

Then, Jason started dating Roy. And with Roy, came Lian.

To Dick, Lian wasn't knew news, he'd met her when she'd been born and had babysat a couple of times. But seeing Roy and Jason so content with her, with their daughter , made something ache in him.

So he broached the topic of kids to Wally again. Who, with such bright enthusiasm Dick almost felt like he was burning up, agreed with no hesitation.

Which leads them here, at Blüdhaven Central, looking for room 646. A room holding their wonderful surrogate Nalani, a mutual friend of Wally's, who's about to give birth to their daughters . Twins. Fraternal, as they'd learned at one of the many ultrasounds and appointments they attended with Nalani.

"Hey!" Despite her current predicament, Nalani is all smiles as the couple bursts into the room.

"How's our favorite person in the whole entire world doing?" Wally gives her a gentle squeeze, sitting on the bed near her hip.

"Any trouble so far?" Dick sets the duffle he was carrying down in the corner, settling into the chair next to the bed.

"I'm fine, no issues, but your daughters seem eager to greet the world. They haven't stopped moving since I got here," Nalani chuckles, smoothing a hand over her stomach.

They idly chatter, serving as distractions during harsher contractions, and they wait. They’re gotten good at waiting, so the fact that their daughters take 39 hours to enter the world feels like nothing.

And it’s worth everything when Dick is handed his oldest. Her hair is light, her skin olive, and she’s perfect. She’s tiny and weightless and squirming and wailing and amazing. Dick doesn’t think he’s ever been in such awe of anything in his life. That is until Wally is handed their other daughter 12 minutes later. He watches as Wally’ face breaks out in the brightest, wobbilest smile ever.

“Ai făcut-o, îți datorez totul,” Dick leans down, carefully of the bundle in his arms, and rests his forehead against Nalani’s. He knows that to her, this was no big deal. Nalani’s never wanted kids for herself, she doesn’t even really want a partner, but she’s granted him the greatest gift, and he will forever be in her debt.

“I have no idea what you said but you’re welcome anyways,” Nalani laughs, ragged and tired, but she laughs and squeezes Dick’s hand.

The girls are taken away briefly to be measured and weighed and cleaned, but they’re back in Dick’s arms soon enough. He settles on the chair, one in each arm, gazing at them. The oldest defiantly has Wally’s hair, but she’s got Dick's nose and lips. The other girl has his own dark hair, but when he rubs the shell of her ear and she cracks her eyes open, they’re a brilliant vibrant green like Wally’s. There’s some traces of Nalani too, which fills Dick's heart more because she's the reason his daughters are here and in his arms.

"So," Nalani drawls a while later, once the doctors and nurses have finished their jobs and left them be for now. "What's their names? You've chosen names right?"

Wally, who'd been taking hundreds of photos, smiles and sits on the arm of Dick's chair. "This is Soleil Mary," He brushes a finger down Soleil's, the oldest, cheek.

"Sorina. Josephine," Dick murmurs, keeping unblinking eye contact with Sorina. Her eyes are so green, so bright, and he finds himself so lost in them that he doesnt feel Wally slip Soleil out of his arms.

"Gorgeous names to match beautiful girls," Nalani beams at them, reaching for Wally's hand. "I can't thank you enough for letting me give this to you guys."

"We can't thank you enough for putting yourself through this for us," Wally's voice is shaky, but none of them say anything. Dick's been crying since he was handed Soleil, and he doesn't think he'll stop anytime soon.

He's overwhelmingly happy, with his daughters and his husband, and he's finally fufilled.

In an hour or so, when it's closer to the time everyone gets off patrol, he'll call everyone and tell them the girls are here. He'll cry more when Bruce gets there first and cries when he's handed his grandaughters. He'll cry even more when Damian takes his place in the recliner with Sorina in his lap. He'll take a million photos of Jason and Duke and Tim holding the girls and smiling at him. He'll squeeze Wally's hand and try not to cry anymore when they bring the girls to the manor and Alfred meets them.

But for now, Dick keeps staring back at his baby girl, and feeling like his heart will pound right out of his chest.
