Work Text:

James Potter arrived at his home after a long day at work. He walked to the door wanting to do nothing more than lay on the couch with his husband.

James went to reach for keys in his pocket but they weren't there.

Shit he thought Reg is going to kill me.

This was in fact not the first time James had lost his keys. At this point James had probably lost his keys at least five times since they moved into the house two months ago.

At first, Regulus was not annoyed and handed him the spare key he made because he knew James was forgetful. James was the most forgetful person you could ever meet. If James went to a gun fight he would probably forget the gun on the couch. But by the third time it happened Regulus was pissed. He wondered how many times someone could lose an item before they found away to keep it safe.

James went back out to the car hoping, even praying, that his keys would be in there to save him from the wrath of his husband. Unfortunately, his keys were not in the car. James thought for a moment before remembering where they were. His keys were inside the house, but the door was locked.

James walked into the backyard hoping that one of the windows were unlocked. He tested each window until he found one that was open. He climbed through the window, breaking into his own kitchen, and ran upstairs to grab his keys. He found the keys but the one specifically for his house was not on the ring. He panicked for a moment before deciding that his window route into the house would have to do until he found the house key.

A week went by and James was still breaking into his own house through the window. Only today was different. James crept through the backyard, opened the window, and climbed through it. James jumped when he heard a voice behind him.

"Well hello there James!" the voice said excitedly, making James turn around rapidly.

"Sirius?" James exclaimed. "How the hell did you get in here? Reg took away your key!"

"Well he gave me a new one 'bout a week ago" Sirius said, pulling out a key that looked a little too close to the ket that James had lost not a week ago.

James jaw dropped at the sight of the key. "He gave you my key? Why would he do that?"

"Well...he did say that he wanted to see how long it would take you to notice it was gone" as soon as Sirius said that, James knew he was in for a real treat the next time he saw his husband.

Sirius pocketed the key and went off to the living room while James just stood there with his entire life flashing before his eyes. "James, come watch some TV with me" Sirius yelled after plopping on the couch.

James cleared his throat, "Y-yea, I'll be right there."

James walked into the living room and found Sirius.

And, Regulus

"Shit-" James managed to say before running away from his angry husband. Sirius on the other hand was laughing like a lunatic and had his phone out to capture the whole thing.

Notes:

weird side track
I was just thinking about this. I saw this post on pinterest where everyone in the comment as saying that their first fic they read in the marauders fan was like a sweet simple heartwarming type of fic. And i was thinking back to what mine was

Mine was fucking Choices 👁️👄👁️

One of the most gut wrenching fics ive ever read. I still cant get over it and its been like 2 years since i read it.

I rlly want to reread it but the first sentence makes me cry, Especially since i know how it ends😭

"People make mistakes, but they also make choices. It’s important to James, that difference. He does his best not to confuse the two."

My eyes start watering when i read that single sentence😭✌🏼
