His mother had summoned him before she had donned her full court costume, which meant she truly had words for him which could not wait. Now, she reached a hand out for him, from across her desk, and frightened, he took it, tightening his fingers around his mother’s. “I’m sorry. I wish I did not have to deliver this news to you today of all days, but it is best you know. She was your daughter, though you never met her."
