Summary
As Cardinal-Deacon, Thomas Lawrence is the papal confessor.
He does not wish for it to be anyone else. This is but one of the reasons he retains his post. He misses the late Holy Father still, but Innocentius XIV is someone he cannot stop himself from serving. He feels, sometimes, as though he has been waiting for this man his whole life. He no longer speaks of resignation, but feels buoyed with spiritual energy, empowered by the Pope’s most divine leadership, by a life full of worship.
It is almost amusing, then, to hear the little sins of the Universal Church’s Supreme Pontiff.

“Of course, your Holiness.”

(He has lived so long under the shadow of his name - Thomas, who doubted. Thomas who slid, or put, or thrust, depending on the translation, his fingers into the wound in his Lord’s side. Caravaggio, the old sinner, had Thomas one knuckle deep.)
