The gardens in Baldur’s Gate were beautiful. Entire rows of flowers, bushes, hedges, lost among pathways and fountains. Birds chirped, children laughed completely oblivious to everything that was happening in the world right now.
How had he lived here and never seen the beauty in it before?
He supposed that that was something to do with Shar and her influence.
He felt numb, taking a seat in a remote area of the garden where he couldn’t be seen, looking up at the sky. His recently dyed hair, fell a little into his face, making it itch.
He felt like he was going to be sick.
‘Eddie, only Shar can make you well. You have to believe in her, remember? Believe in Shar.’
“No, no, no.” He buried his face into his hands, “Don’t listen to her. Don’t listen to her.”
“I thought I’d find you here.” A familiar voice muttered behind him. Eddie barely turned around, knowing who it was and being honestly unsure about whether or not he wanted to speak to him.
Richie approached, nervously adjusting the lute on his back.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Eddie muttered, “Didn’t you get stabbed?”
“I have some healing magic as well you know.” Richie scoffed, “Besides, let’s not forget that I was the only one who managed to cope with all that...darkness crap they threw at us. You know, on account of being used to it.” He waved his hand in front of his eyes a little obnoxiously, as Eddie rolled his own.
Richie then took the seat next to him. “They were all a little worried when we couldn’t find you.” He stated, “You did go through some shit back there.”
Some shit.
Finding out his life was a lie, that his mother had basically brain-washed him his entire life to worship a goddess who just saw him as some sort of...victory against her sister.
Some shit was an understatement.
Eddie just nodded, looking up at the sky, wondering if they would all survive this after all this.
“Do you feel like we’re going through our final days?”
“Nah.” Richie laughed, “With how lucky we’ve been so far, I think our luck will hold out some more.”
“Luck?” Eddie raised an eyebrow, “Really?”
“Well yeah, what else would you call surviving a giant robot who could walk in lava? Or the literal God of Bones?” Richie shrugged, “Think about it, what else could it be except for luck?”
Eddie grunted “Some of us have actual talents that help us stay alive.”
“And Eddie gets off a good one!” Richie made a loud, obnoxious noise, and Eddie was surprised to find himself smiling, a peaceful silence falling over them.
“Hey…Eddie?”
“Hm?”
“…If something does go wrong…”
Eddie looked over at Richie, finding that he hated the serious look on the bard’s face.
“…And I kick the bucket and all that…”
No, he didn’t like this conversation at all.
“…bury me somewhere nice? Maybe in a garden like this one?”
“Richie- “
“- I’m scared Eddie.” There was a tired smile on Richie’s face, “I can’t pretend that I’m not. This is the most terrified I’ve ever felt.”
Eddie could understand that.
And whilst he didn’t want to think about it, there was a high chance that one of them would die.
He himself was lucky….but Bev’s heart could give out on her at any day.
Bill could be found and killed in this ritual.
Ben’s people could finally hunt him down.
Stan might go through Mystra’s plan and give his life to save everyone.
…Richie or any of them could be killed during the fight.
“I promise.” Eddie whispered, “But we’re not going to die.”
“…Whatever you say Eds.”
Eddie let him have that one.
