this piece has a wonderful crystal clarity in terms of practical description and emotional significance. look at this:
I could hear Maria's hiccoughing cries as I approached, jolting on Winter's shoulder as he half-ran, half-picked his way down the slope. I caught the girl under the arms and put my knee in Winter's back; as he let go to catch himself, I hauled Maria free and turned back towards the house.
we need to know that maria is being carried over the shoulder to envision how watson grabs her away. we learn this in the same breath as her physical sensation and watson's visual: the jolting.
and this:
He picked up my hand and held it, very lightly, against the corner of his mouth, so that I felt it against the back of my hand when he smiled but could not see it behind our fingers, entwined.
there are a variety of ways to describe holding a hand to the face. the significant piece here is the mouth (like a kiss), the corner of it (hesitance to actually kiss, intense affection wrestling with fear). the amount of meaning per word here is crazy
