Summary
“I’ll remind you, Seargent, that I earned my pauldron and paint just like everyone else. I’m not some shiny who’s never seen a battle or gone on a tough assignment.”
Rex's irritation faded quickly, however, as he saw something akin to pity in the other man’s face as he replied.
“I don’t doubt that. But listen to me when I tell you, what you’re about to see? You’ve never run into something like this and none of your training or experience is going to help you down there. There’s a reason they send us and not a regular unit. I’m not trying to insult you, Captain, I’m just stating a fact. Keep sharp, follow our lead, we know what we’re doing.”

Rex couldn’t stop the snap to his tone as he cut in, frustration at the other man’s single-mindedness on this matter winning out.
“To a more defensible position! Even if we had managed to push them into the foothills that would have put them out of range of our tanks and then given them even more cover while we would have been forced to push out into the open! All due respect General, but our men aren’t Jedi! They don’t have any defense against that kind of firepower and you can’t be everywhere! We had already lost almost half of our force to those tank rounds and the clanker's advance waves. There was no way that we could have won that fight. I made the call I thought was right to save the lives of the men we had left.”
“It wasn’t your call to make!” General Skywalker yelled and Rex felt the resignation settle into his chest. This wasn’t just about the fight, this was about the fact that Rex had stepped out of line. The General was feeling angry and betrayed and Rex knew how potent a combo that could be when a man got it in his head. He wouldn’t want to listen to reason right now.
“You’re right, it wasn’t. But I made it and I am willing to face the consequences for that decision,” he agreed stiffly causing General Skywalker to frown.
“Good, because you will be the one explaining to the Council why we failed today.”
“Yes, sir.”
The General gave him one last look of disapproval before turning around to punch in the code to contact the Jedi Temple.
As the blue figures appeared one by one, Rex wasn’t surprised to find most of the Council present instead of the scattered few who could usually attend, though disappointed to see that General Kenobi was absent. This campaign had been crucial to the progression of the war in this system and a large number of plans would need to be changed as a result of his failure.
What he didn’t expect was for the Supreme Chancellor to be in attendance as well.
BRO FUCK OF???? THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHAT THE FUCK
The salute was born purely of muscle memory, Rex’s mind too blank to do anything but rely on his ingrained training to get him out of the room. Nothing fully registered to him, though he heard raised voices again behind him before the door slid closed.
Returned to Kamino… stripped of your rank…
No matter the cost.
He was walking, moving forward but to where he couldn’t be bothered to tell. He was…he couldn’t even force himself to think the words. He had to-to…
Returned to Kamino.
He had to prepare his men for his death.
This was the cost.
