There are twenty-seven wards on the Great Bridge that leads to the castle of the Dreaming, meant to keep out errant dreams and dreamers alike. One night while he is sleeping, Hob Gadling walks straight through all of them.
Fortunately, Hob thinks that everything he sees — Dream included — is an invention of his own sleeping mind. Dream sees no reason to challenge that, especially with the flowers springing up in Dream’s step that he can neither control nor explain.
