    Summary

Nothing much changes between 1985 and 1995, except for everything else.

But getting older is for other, less remarkable people.

Hobbes has theories, and presents them like he knows everything. “You,” he tells Calvin, eyes closed and face pointed upwards haughtily, “are unsuited for being any age bigger than six. The universe is keeping you just here until you figure it out.”

And Calvin sticks out his tongue and points out the other kids in his class who haven’t moved. “Susie Derkins is probably ready to be about thirty-five. But she’s still six, too.”

Susie Derkins used to have a friend called Jessica. Jessica is in the fifth grade now and doesn’t really talk to Susie anymore.

They sort of acknowledge each other, in the halls, but it’s in a strange way. Jessica is almost double Susie’s age, and their former friendship seems to exist outside of time. They played hopscotch a few times, the first year that Jessica was older, and then Jessica started sitting under the big tree, and it stopped.

Susie Derkins still sits with Calvin at lunch, though. She makes allusions to the future, like she’s thinking about it more than he is. She talks about stuff like senior prom and age seventeen and future universities. Susie’s favourite game is House, because she wants a job and a family and an adult life. Calvin doesn’t like House.

He wants to ask if she knows they’ve been six since 1985, but it’s 1990 and he’s worried if he acknowledges it properly it’ll just stop and he’ll be seven tomorrow.

He actually can’t remember when his birthday is.

He has endless summer days to spend with Hobbes, stretching out forever into oblivion, and he has the time for a million more snow sculptures, and he has so much time. Time isn’t a precious resource when you have so much of it to waste, and yet every second is precious and school eats too much of it.

    Calvin could be six forever.

    Calvin and Hobbes

In which Calvin is Six years old. Even though it’s been much more than a year since his last birthday.
