Work Text:

"I want you to get me pregnant. I'd like to give birth."

Maomao's statement shatters the equilibrium of a typical day. Jinshi freezes, staring into the luminous blue of her eyes averted from his gaze. She wants him to get her pregnant, wants a child from him?  Wants for him to take her to bed, peel away her clothes and lavish his affections on her as she willingly yields her body to him? For him to make love to her until his seed takes root within her womb and ripens into a child birthed from her loins? Their child, an irrefutable proof of their bond?

"I'd finally be able to use my own placenta afterward to make medicine." She continues, voice as steady and sedate as always, "Animal placenta is extremely nutritious, given that it feeds the fetus during its development in the womb. I've always wondered if there's any difference between an animal placenta and a human one, so naturally I'd like to find out."

A pause. Jinshi remains frozen. "I-"

"For us to do that, we should get married."

Jinshi feels like a child handed fireworks, having been given anything he's ever wanted. Beautiful and captivating, whenever he pleases, yet deafening and destructive once he strikes a flame to the wick. Women don't have to be married to become pregnant and have children. Given that she grew up in the Verdigris House, shouldn't she be the first person to know that? Yet the thought of someone else - anyone else, any other man touching Maomao and impregnating her makes rage flare up within him. She requested these things from him and no one else! She finally wants to get married to him, to become his one and only wife like how he's always wanted! But why would she ask him for such a thing out of the blue in the first place?

"Are you doing all this just because you want to have a human placenta?!" Jinshi finally bursts out.

Her eyes finally slide to meet his, a brief contact before flicking away. "It's definitely a benefit," she says before walking away.

In every story she'd read, every tale recounted to her, and every song she heard, the man was always the one professing his love to the woman first. She'd been regaled with accounts of women making romantic advances and scaring away their targets of affection each time with their forthrightness, as the men believed that a woman should be passive. Maomao was no sensitive maiden with a sweet tongue, her entire self possessing less social acumen compared to that which was contained in Lady Gyokuyou's pinky finger. There was no way she could have enticed a celestial maiden of a man like Jinshi with her blunt mannerisms, and any attempts at coquetry would just be made comically bad with her chicken-boned body and childish features.

Therefore, there was no better way than providing a separate benefit to soften the blow of her direct request. After all, given the nutrition packed into a placenta, if she could make medicine out of it, it might even be effective enough to be a universal panacea which could be used to treat all diseases. From every perspective she had considered, this was a desirable path to take.

So why did he sound so affronted, after she had gone to all that trouble to take his masculine ego into consideration?

"Oi! You stop right there! Don't just walk away from me after saying something like that!"

Maomao does as told, turning around to face a flustered Jinshi with his cheeks reddened and fists clenched. A childish image.

"You were the one who said we should get married, so I'll hold you to it!" He hollers. "We'll hold our wedding as soon as possible!"

A childish retort. His shoulders are hunched over as if he is ready to leap forward, while his chest heaves with deep breaths like he had just run a long distance. With his eyes boring into hers, Maomao says "Un." for a want of something to reply with, to acknowledge that he'd said something.

Immediately, he scurries away as if to cut her off from any reply, running in the direction that leads his office, which, she knows, is where he'll be doing the necessary paperwork to make their union official and ordering the decorations, garments and ceremonial preparations.

He just ran away after telling me not to just run away. Maomao sighs to herself. The sunshine is bright and gentle, uplifting to the mind and making it a perfect day to be outside as she resumes her walk.

Notes:

I realise that readers of this fic may have some questions. Namely, which part of the timeline is this? Is it after some dramatic events have happened in the LN and between Jinshi and Maomao, or anywhere on their character development arcs? Is Maomao joking or is she being roundabout about her intentions and refusing to directly engage with her feelings?

The answer is yes, and I work purely based off vibes. hope u enjoyed
