Work Text:
It was beginning to become ridiculous, the desperation that Neuvillette was starting to feel to draw Furina back to his side. It had gone from a want, to a longing, to a despair, and now it was a loss that was beginning to grate on his nerves like nails- painful every time he thought of it.
It had only been months. Months, after four centuries of partnership. How had he ever handled Furina’s absences from his side before? Had he ever really had to face her absence from his side before?
And to think that there had been times through the centuries when he’d desired a break from her company so he could get some work done. Not because he disliked her presence; but because she was far too distracting, even when she tried not to be. (His eyes were drawn her too often.)
Ha. If he could go back to his past selves, he would take their versions of Furina from them to enjoy her company with while letting the past versions of himself be the ones to live through this hell.
Not that anyone realized he was so deeply affected. Neuvillette’s ability to hide his emotions and project an aura of competence and composure was serving him now like it never had before. It was only in the rarest of slip ups that he even indicated how often Furina was on his mind.
He didn’t know how much longer he could keep that as the truth. He feared his inner dragon was beginning to truly hate him for the way that Neuvillette was preventing them from going to her out of a desire to respect Furina’s own wishes. It was only the fear that they both possessed that Furina truly didn’t wish to see them that kept the dragon from wresting control away and recollecting their treasure whether she agreed to it or not.
They could take her being angry with them. They could never take her truly hating them.
Neuvillette sighed deeply as he stepped through the door to his set of rooms, shutting the door behind him and then resting his head back against it.
Another long day of silence.
He hoped that soon they would reach their end.
